1 I t was decided that we should go to the country of Italy by ship. Then they put Paul and some other men in chains. Julius, a captain of Caesar’s army, was to watch them.

Cuando se decidió que deberíamos embarcarnos para Italia, fueron entregados Pablo y algunos otros presos a un centurión de la compañía (tropa) Augusta, llamado Julio.

2 W e went on a ship that was from the city of Adramyttian. It was going to stop at the towns along the sea-shore of Asia. Aristarchus was with us. He was a man from the city of Thessalonica in the country of Macedonia.

Embarcándonos en una nave Adramitena que estaba para salir hacia las regiones de la costa de Asia (provincia occidental de Asia Menor), nos hicimos a la mar acompañados por Aristarco, un Macedonio de Tesalónica.

3 T he next day we stopped in the city of Sidon. Julius was kind to Paul. He let him visit friends who cared for him.

Al día siguiente llegamos a Sidón. Julio trató con benevolencia a Pablo, permitiéndole ir a sus amigos y ser atendido por ellos.

4 A fter leaving Sidon we were blown by the wind along the south side of the island of Cyprus. The wind was against us.

De allí partimos y navegamos al amparo de la isla de Chipre, porque los vientos eran contrarios.

5 W e crossed the sea along the countries of Cilicia and Pamphylia and got to the city of Myra in the country of Lycia.

Después de navegar atravesando el mar frente a las costas de Cilicia y de Panfilia, llegamos a Mira de Licia.

6 T he captain found a ship from the city of Alexandria that was going to the country of Italy. He put us on it.

Allí el centurión halló una nave Alejandrina que iba para Italia, y nos embarcó en ella.

7 F or many days the ship did not move fast. It was hard to get to the city of Cnidus. The wind would not let us go on. So we went along the south shore of the island of Crete and passed the end of the island called Salome.

Después de navegar lentamente por muchos días, y de llegar con dificultad frente a Gnido, pues el viento no nos permitió avanzar más, navegamos al amparo de la isla de Creta, frente a Salmón.

8 T he wind was against us, and we did not sail very fast. Then we came to a place called Fair Havens. It was near the city of Lasea.

Costeándola con dificultad, llegamos a un lugar llamado Buenos Puertos, cerca del cual estaba la ciudad de Lasea. La Tempestad en el Mar

9 M uch time had been lost. To keep going that late in the year would mean danger. Paul spoke with strong words,

Cuando ya había pasado mucho tiempo y la navegación se había vuelto peligrosa, pues hasta el Ayuno (el Día de Expiación) había pasado ya, Pablo los amonestaba,

10 “ Sirs, it looks to me as if this ship and its freight will be lost. We are in danger of being lost also.”

diciéndoles: “Amigos, veo que de seguro este viaje va a ser con perjuicio y graves pérdidas, no sólo del cargamento y de la nave, sino también de nuestras vidas.”

11 T he captain of the soldiers listened to what the captain of the ship said and not to what Paul said.

Pero el centurión se persuadió más por lo que fue dicho por el piloto y el capitán del barco, que por lo que Pablo decía.

12 I t was not a good place to spend the winter. Most of those on the ship wanted to go on and try to get to Phoenix. Crete was a good place to tie up the ship. They wanted to spend the winter there.

Como el puerto no era adecuado para invernar, la mayoría tomó la decisión de hacerse a la mar desde allí, para ver si les era posible arribar a Fenice, un puerto de Creta que mira hacia el nordeste y el sudeste, y pasar el invierno allí.

13 W hen a south wind started to blow, they thought their plan was right. They pulled up the anchor and went close to the shore of Crete.

Cuando comenzó a soplar un moderado viento del sur, creyendo que habían logrado su propósito, levaron anclas y navegaban costeando a Creta.

14 L ater a bad wind storm came down from the land. It was called a northeaster.

Pero no mucho después, desde tierra comenzó a soplar un viento huracanado que se llama Euroclidón (viento del nordeste),

15 T he ship was stopped by the wind. After awhile we gave up and let it go with the wind.

y siendo azotada la nave, y no pudiendo hacer frente al viento nos abandonamos a él y nos dejamos llevar a la deriva.

16 W e went behind a small island called Claudia. It was hard work but we were able to make the ship’s boat safe.

Navegando al amparo de una pequeña isla llamada Clauda, con mucha dificultad pudimos sujetar el bote salvavidas.

17 T hey pulled it up and tied ropes around it and the ship. They were afraid of going on the Syrtis sands. So they took the sail down and let the ship go with the wind.

Después que lo alzaron, usaron amarras para sujetar la nave. Temiendo encallar en los bancos de Sirte, echaron el ancla flotante y se abandonaron a la deriva.

18 T he storm was so bad the high waves were beating against the ship. The next day the men threw some of the freight over into the sea.

Al día siguiente, mientras éramos sacudidos furiosamente por la tormenta, comenzaron a arrojar la carga.

19 O n the third day, with their own hands, they threw part of the sails and ropes into the sea.

Al tercer día, con sus propias manos arrojaron al mar los aparejos de la nave.

20 W e did not see the sun or stars for many days. A very bad storm kept beating against us. We lost all hope of being saved. Paul Shows His Faith

Como ni el sol ni las estrellas aparecieron por muchos días, y una tempestad no pequeña se abatía sobre nosotros, desde entonces fuimos abandonando toda esperanza de salvarnos.

21 N o one had eaten for a long time. Then Paul stood up and said to them, “Men, you should have listened to me and not left Crete. You would not have had this trouble and loss.

Cuando habían pasado muchos días sin comer, Pablo se puso en pie en medio de ellos y dijo: “Amigos, debían haberme hecho caso y no haber salido de Creta, evitando así este perjuicio y pérdida.

22 B ut now I want you to take hope. No one will lose his life. Only the ship will be lost.

Pero ahora los exhorto a tener buen ánimo, porque no habrá pérdida de vida entre ustedes, sino sólo del barco.

23 I belong to God and I work for Him. Last night an angel of God stood by me

“Porque esta noche estuvo en mi presencia un ángel del Dios de quien soy y a quien sirvo,

24 a nd said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand in front of Caesar. God has given you the lives of all the men on this ship.’

diciendo: ‘No temas, Pablo; has de comparecer ante el César; pero ahora, Dios te ha concedido todos los que navegan contigo.’

25 S o take hope, men. I believe my God will do what He has told me.

Por tanto, tengan buen ánimo amigos, porque yo confío en Dios, que acontecerá exactamente como se me dijo.

26 B ut the ship will be lost on some island.”

Pero tenemos que encallar en alguna isla.”

27 I t was now the fourteenth night. We were going with the wind on the Adriatic Sea. At midnight the sailors thought land was near.

Llegada la decimocuarta noche, mientras éramos llevados a la deriva en el mar Adriático, a eso de la medianoche los marineros presentían que se estaban acercando a tierra.

28 T hey let down the lead weight and found the water was not very deep. After they had gone a little farther, they found there was not as much water.

Echaron la sonda y hallaron que había 20 brazas (36m) de profundidad. Pasando un poco más adelante volvieron a echar la sonda y hallaron 15 brazas (27m).

29 T hey were afraid we might be thrown against the rocks on the shore. So they put out four anchors from the back of the ship. Then they waited for morning to come.

Temiendo que en algún lugar fuéramos a dar contra los escollos, echaron cuatro anclas por la popa y ansiaban (rogaban) que amaneciera.

30 T he sailors were thinking of leaving the ship. They let down a boat as if they were going to put out anchors from the front of the ship.

Como los marineros trataban de escapar de la nave y habían bajado el bote salvavidas al mar, bajo pretexto de que se proponían echar las anclas desde la proa,

31 B ut Paul said to the captain and the soldiers, “These men must stay on the ship or you cannot be safe!”

Pablo dijo al centurión y a los soldados: “Si éstos no permanecen en la nave, ustedes no podrán salvarse.”

32 T hen the soldiers cut the ropes and let the boat fall into the sea.

Entonces los soldados cortaron las amarras del bote y dejaron que se perdiera.

33 J ust before the light of day came, Paul told all of them to eat. He said, “Today is the fourteenth day you have not eaten.

Cuando estaba a punto de amanecer, Pablo exhortaba a todos a que tomaran alimento, diciendo: “Hace ya catorce días que, velando continuamente, están en ayunas, sin tomar ningún alimento.

34 Y ou must eat. It will give you strength. Not one of you will lose a hair from your head.”

Por eso les aconsejo que tomen alimento, porque esto es necesario para sobrevivir. Porque ni un solo cabello de la cabeza de ninguno de ustedes perecerá.”

35 A fter he said this, he took some bread. He gave thanks to God in front of them all. He broke it in pieces and started to eat.

Habiendo dicho esto, Pablo tomó pan y dio gracias a Dios en presencia de todos; y partiéndo lo, comenzó a comer.

36 T hey all were comforted. Each one ate some food.

Entonces todos, teniendo ya buen ánimo, tomaron también alimento.

37 A ll together there were 276 of us on the ship.

En total éramos en la nave 276 personas.

38 A fter they had eaten, they threw the wheat into the sea so the ship would not be as heavy.

Una vez saciados, aligeraron la nave arrojando el trigo al mar.

39 I n the morning they could not see what land they were near. Later they could see a river. Near its mouth there was a shore of sand. They planned to run the ship onto the sand if they could.

Cuando se hizo de día, no reconocían la tierra, pero podían distinguir una bahía que tenía playa, y decidieron lanzar la nave hacia ella, si les era posible.

40 T he anchors were cut loose and left in the sea. Then they took the ropes off that were holding the rudder. When they put up the sail, the wind took the ship toward shore.

Cortando las anclas, las dejaron en el mar, aflojando al mismo tiempo las amarras de los timones. Izando la vela de proa al viento, se dirigieron hacia la playa.

41 B ut the ship hit a place where the water was low. It was made from where two seas meet. The front of the ship did not move but the back part broke in pieces by the high waves.

Pero chocando contra un escollo donde se encuentran dos corrientes, encallaron la nave; la proa se clavó y quedó inmóvil, pero la popa se rompía por la fuerza de las olas.

42 T he soldiers planned to kill the men in chains. They were afraid they would swim to shore and get away,

El plan de los soldados era matar a los presos, para que ninguno de ellos escapara a nado.

43 b ut the captain wanted to save Paul. He kept them from their plan. Calling out to those who could swim, he told them to jump into the sea and swim to shore.

Pero el centurión, queriendo salvar a Pablo, impidió su propósito, y ordenó que los que pudieran nadar se arrojaran primero por la borda y llegaran a tierra,

44 T he others should use wood or anything from the ship. In this way, they all got to shore without getting hurt.

y que los demás siguieran, algunos en tablones, y otros en diferentes objetos de la nave. Y así sucedió que todos llegaron salvos a tierra.
