1 T he Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you be filled with sorrow because of Saul, since I have turned away from him being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse of Bethlehem. For I have chosen a king for Myself among his sons.”

Y el Señor dijo a Samuel: “¿Hasta cuándo te lamentarás por Saúl, después que Yo lo he desechado para que no reine sobre Israel ? Llena tu cuerno de aceite y ve; te enviaré a Isaí, el de Belén (Casa del Pan), porque de entre sus hijos he escogido un rey para Mí.”

2 B ut Samuel said, “How can I go? Saul will kill me when he hears about it.” The Lord said, “Take a young cow with you, and say, ‘I have come to give a gift to the Lord.’

Samuel respondió: “¿Cómo puedo ir? Cuando Saúl lo sepa, me matará.” Y el Señor dijo: “Toma contigo una novilla y di: ‘He venido a ofrecer sacrificio al Señor.’

3 A sk Jesse to come when you give the gift, and I will show you what you should do. You will choose for Me the one I name to you.”

Invitarás a Isaí al sacrificio y Yo te mostraré lo que habrás de hacer; entonces me ungirás a aquél que Yo te indique.”

4 S o Samuel did what the Lord said, and came to Bethlehem. The leaders of the city came shaking with fear to meet him. They said, “Do you come in peace?”

Samuel hizo lo que el Señor dijo, y fue a Belén. Y los ancianos de la ciudad vinieron a su encuentro temblando y dijeron: “¿Vienes en paz ?”

5 S amuel said, “I have come in peace to give a gift to the Lord. Make yourselves holy and come with me as I give the gift.” He set apart Jesse and his sons also, and asked them to come to the gift-giving.

Y él respondió: “En paz. He venido a ofrecer sacrificio al Señor. Conságrense y vengan conmigo al sacrificio.” Samuel consagró también a Isaí y a sus hijos y los invitó al sacrificio.

6 W hen they had come, Samuel looked at Eliab and thought, “For sure he is the Lord’s chosen one who is standing before Him.”

Cuando ellos entraron, Samuel vio a Eliab, y se dijo: “Ciertamente el ungido del Señor está delante de El.”

7 B ut the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at the way he looks on the outside or how tall he is, because I have not chosen him. For the Lord does not look at the things man looks at. A man looks at the outside of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Pero el Señor dijo a Samuel: “No mires a su apariencia, ni a lo alto de su estatura, porque lo he desechado; porque Dios no ve como el hombre ve, pues el hombre mira la apariencia exterior, pero el Señor mira el corazón.”

8 T hen Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one.”

Entonces Isaí llamó a Abinadab y lo hizo pasar delante de Samuel, y dijo: “Tampoco a éste ha escogido el Señor.”

9 N ext Jesse made Shammah pass by. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one.”

Después Isaí hizo pasar a Sama. Y Samuel dijo: “Tampoco a éste ha escogido el Señor.”

10 J esse made seven of his sons pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.”

Así Isaí hizo pasar a siete de sus hijos delante de Samuel. Pero Samuel dijo a Isaí: “El Señor no ha escogido a éstos.”

11 T hen Samuel said to Jesse, “Are these all the children?” And Jesse said, “There is yet the youngest one. See, he is taking care of the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send for him. We will not sit down until he comes here.”

Samuel preguntó: “¿Son éstos todos tus hijos ?” Isaí respondió: “Aún queda el menor, es el que está apacentando las ovejas.” Samuel insistió: “Manda a buscarlo, pues no nos sentaremos a la mesa hasta que él venga acá.”

12 S o he sent for him and brought him in. His youngest son had good color in his skin, beautiful eyes and was good-looking. The Lord said, “Rise up and choose him. For this is the one.”

Y envió a buscarlo y lo hizo entrar. Era rubio, de ojos hermosos y bien parecido. Y el Señor dijo: “Levántate, úngelo; porque éste es.”

13 T hen Samuel took the horn of oil and poured the oil on him in front of his brothers. The Spirit of the Lord came upon David with strength from that day on. And Samuel got up and went to Ramah. Saul’s Spirit Is Troubled

Entonces Samuel tomó el cuerno de aceite y lo ungió en medio de sus hermanos. Y el Espíritu del Señor vino poderosamente sobre David desde aquel día en adelante. Luego Samuel se levantó y se fue a Ramá. David, Escudero de Saúl

14 N ow the Spirit of the Lord left Saul. And a bad spirit sent from the Lord brought trouble upon him.

El Espíritu del Señor se apartó de Saúl, y un espíritu malo de parte del Señor lo atormentaba.

15 S aul’s servants said to him, “See, a bad spirit from God is bringing you trouble.

Entonces los siervos de Saúl le dijeron: “Puesto que un espíritu malo de parte de Dios lo está atormentando,

16 L et our lord now tell your servants who are in front of you to look for a man who is a good player of the harp. When the bad spirit sent from God is upon you, he will play the harp, and you will be well.”

ordena ahora nuestro señor a sus siervos que están delante de usted, que busquen un hombre que sepa tocar el arpa, y cuando el espíritu malo de parte de Dios esté sobre usted, él tocará con su mano y le pondrá bien.”

17 S o Saul said to his servants, “Find me a man who can play well, and bring him to me.”

Entonces Saúl dijo a sus siervos: “Búsquenme ahora un hombre que toque bien y tráiganme lo.”

18 O ne of the young men said, “I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who plays music well. He is a man with strength of heart, a man of war, wise in his speaking, and good-looking. And the Lord is with him.”

Y respondió uno de los mancebos: “Yo he visto a un hijo de Isaí, el de Belén, que sabe tocar, es poderoso y valiente, un hombre de guerra, prudente en su hablar, hombre bien parecido y el Señor está con él.”

19 S o Saul sent men with news to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David who is with the sheep.”

Entonces Saúl envió mensajeros a Isaí y dijo: “Envíame a tu hijo David, el que está con el rebaño.”

20 J esse took a donkey loaded with bread, a bottle of wine, and a young goat, and sent them to Saul with David his son.

Isaí tomó un asno cargado de pan, un odre de vino y un cabrito, y los envió a Saúl con su hijo David.

21 D avid came to Saul and served him. Saul loved him very much, and he became the man who carried Saul’s battle-clothes.

David fue a Saúl y le servía; y Saúl lo amó grandemente y lo hizo su escudero.

22 S aul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Let David serve me, for he has found favor in my eyes.”

Y Saúl envió a decir a Isaí: “Te ruego que David se quede delante de mí, pues ha hallado gracia ante mis ojos.”

23 W hen the bad spirit sent from God came upon Saul, David would take the harp and play it with his hand. And Saul would receive new strength and be well. The bad spirit would leave him.

Sucedía que cuando el espíritu malo de parte de Dios venía a Saúl, David tomaba el arpa, la tocaba hábilmente con su mano, y Saúl se calmaba y se ponía bien, y el espíritu malo se apartaba de él.
