1 W hile Apollos was in the city of Corinth, Paul went through the hill country to get to the city of Ephesus. He found a few followers there.

Mientras Apolos estaba en Corinto, Pablo, después de haber recorrido las regiones superiores, llegó a Efeso y encontró a algunos discípulos,

2 H e asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you put your trust in Christ?” They said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

y les preguntó: “¿Recibieron el Espíritu Santo cuando creyeron ?” Ellos le respondieron: “No, ni siquiera hemos oído si hay un Espíritu Santo.”

3 H e asked them, “How were you baptized?” They answered, “The way John baptized.”

Entonces Pablo les preguntó: “¿En qué bautismo, pues, fueron bautizados?” “En el bautismo de Juan,” contestaron ellos.

4 P aul said, “John baptized those who were sorry for their sins and turned from them. He told the people to put their trust in Jesus Who was coming later.”

Y Pablo les dijo: “Juan bautizó con el bautismo de arrepentimiento, diciendo al pueblo que creyeran en Aquél que vendría después de él, es decir, en Jesús.”

5 T he people there were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus when they heard this.

Al oír esto, fueron bautizados en el nombre del Señor Jesús.

6 W hen Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them. They started to talk in special sounds and to speak God’s Word.

Cuando Pablo les impuso las manos, vino sobre ellos el Espíritu Santo, y hablaban en lenguas y profetizaban.

7 T here were about twelve men. Paul Preaches in a Place of Worship and in a School in Ephesus

Eran en total unos doce hombres. La Iglesia se Establece en Efeso

8 F or three months Paul went into the Jewish place of worship and spoke without fear. He taught them things about the holy nation of God.

Pablo entró en la sinagoga, y por tres meses continuó hablando abiertamente, discutiendo y persuadiéndo les acerca del reino de Dios.

9 S ome let their hearts grow hard. They would not put their trust in Christ. These spoke against the Christian religion in front of other people. Then Paul took the followers away from the others. He taught them each day in the school of Tyrannus.

Pero cuando algunos se endurecieron y se volvieron desobedientes, hablando mal del Camino ante la multitud, Pablo se apartó de ellos llevándose a los discípulos, y discutía diariamente en la escuela de Tirano.

10 H e did this for two years. All the Jews and the Greeks in the countries of Asia heard the Word of the Lord. Paul Does Powerful Works

Esto continuó por dos años, de manera que todos los que vivían en Asia (provincia occidental de Asia Menor) oyeron la palabra del Señor, tanto Judíos como Griegos.

11 G od used Paul to do powerful special works.

Dios hacía milagros extraordinarios por mano de Pablo,

12 P ieces of cloth and parts of his clothes that had been next to his body were put on sick people. Then they were healed of their diseases and demons came out of them.

de tal manera que incluso llevaban pañuelos o delantales de su cuerpo a los enfermos, y las enfermedades los dejaban y los malos espíritus se iban de ellos.

13 T here were Jews who went from city to city trying to put demons out of people. Some of these tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus on those who had demons. They said, “I speak to you in the name of Jesus, the One Paul preaches about.”

Pero también algunos de los Judíos, exorcistas ambulantes, trataron de invocar el nombre del Señor Jesús sobre los que tenían espíritus malos, diciendo: “Les ordeno que salgan, en el Nombre de Jesús a quien Pablo predica.”

14 A Jewish leader of the people by the name of Sceva had seven sons. These sons were trying to do this.

Siete hijos de un tal Esceva, uno de los principales sacerdotes Judíos, eran los que hacían esto.

15 T he demon said, “I know Jesus. I know about Paul. But who are you?”

Pero el espíritu malo les respondió: “A Jesús conozco, y sé quién es Pablo, pero ustedes, ¿quiénes son?”

16 T hen the man with the demon jumped on the sons. He had power over them and beat them. They ran out of the house with no clothes on and they were hurt.

Y el hombre en quien estaba el espíritu malo se lanzó sobre ellos, y los dominó y pudo más que ellos, de manera que huyeron de aquella casa desnudos y heridos.

17 A ll the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus heard about it. Because of this all the people became afraid. And the name of the Lord Jesus was held in great honor.

Supieron esto todos los habitantes de Efeso, tanto Judíos como Griegos. El temor se apoderó de todos ellos, y el nombre del Señor Jesús era exaltado.

18 M any Christians came and told of the wrong things they were doing.

También muchos de los que habían creído continuaban viniendo, confesando y declarando las cosas que practicaban.

19 M any of those who did witchcraft gathered their books together and burned them in front of everyone. These books were worth 50, 000 pieces of silver money.

Muchos de los que practicaban la magia, juntando sus libros, los quemaban a la vista de todos. Calcularon su precio y hallaron que llegaba a 50, 000 monedas de plata (180 kg).

20 T he Word of the Lord became well-known.

Así crecía poderosamente y prevalecía la palabra del Señor. Los Planes de Pablo

21 A fter this, Paul thought he would go through the countries of Macedonia and Greece. Then he would go to Jerusalem. He said, “After I have been there, I must go to the city of Rome also.”

Pasadas estas cosas, Pablo decidió en el espíritu ir a Jerusalén después de recorrer Macedonia y Acaya, diciendo: “Después que haya estado allí, debo visitar también Roma.”

22 H e sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia. Paul stayed in the countries of Asia awhile longer. The Meeting of the Silver Workmen in Ephesus

23 D uring that time there was much trouble about the Christians.

24 A man named Demetrius made small silver buildings for the worship of Diana. His workmen received much money for their work.

Porque cierto platero que se llamaba Demetrio, que labraba templecillos de plata de Diana (Artemisa) y producía no pocas ganancias a los artífices,

25 H e called his workmen together and other men who made these small silver buildings. He said to them, “Men, you know we make much money from this work.

reunió a éstos junto con los obreros de oficios semejantes, y dijo: “Compañeros, ustedes saben que nuestra prosperidad depende de este comercio.

26 N ow you hear that Paul has turned away many people in Ephesus as well as in Asia. He tells them that gods made with hands are not gods.

Pueden ver y oír que no sólo en Efeso, sino en casi toda Asia, este Pablo ha persuadido a una gran cantidad de gente, y la ha apartado, diciendo que los dioses hechos con las manos no son dioses verdaderos.

27 I t could be that our work will not be respected. Not only that, the house of worship for the god of Diana will be worth nothing and her greatness will be destroyed. All the countries of Asia and the world worship her.”

Y no sólo corremos el peligro de que nuestro oficio caiga en descrédito, sino también de que el templo de la gran diosa Diana se considere sin valor, y que ella, a quien adora toda Asia y el mundo entero, sea despojada de su grandeza.”

28 T hey became angry when they heard this and cried out, “Great is Diana of Ephesus.”

Cuando oyeron esto, se llenaron de ira, y comenzaron a gritar: “¡Grande es Diana de los Efesios!”

29 T he whole city was filled with loud cries. They caught Gaius and Aristarchus. These two men from Macedonia were with Paul. They gathered around them at the meeting place in the city.

La ciudad se llenó de confusión y a una se precipitaron en el teatro, arrastrando consigo a Gayo y a Aristarco, los compañeros de viaje de Pablo, que eran de Macedonia.

30 P aul wanted to stand in front of all the people but his followers would not let him.

Cuando Pablo quiso ir a la multitud, los discípulos no se lo permitieron.

31 S ome of the city leaders who were his friends told him not to go to the meeting.

También algunas de las autoridades de la provincia de Asia, que eran amigos de Pablo, le enviaron mensaje y repetidamente le rogaron que no se aventurara a presentarse en el teatro.

32 A ll this time some were crying out one thing and some another. The meeting was all noise. Most of the people did not know why they had come together.

Así que unos gritaban una cosa y otros otra, porque había confusión en la asamblea, y la mayoría no sabía por qué razón se habían reunido.

33 T hen the Jews pushed Alexander to the front. Alexander held his hand up and was going to speak.

Algunos de la multitud pensaron que se trataba de Alejandro, puesto que los Judíos lo habían empujado hacia adelante. Entonces Alejandro, haciendo señal de silencio con la mano, quería hacer su defensa ante la asamblea.

34 A s soon as they saw he was a Jew, they cried out with a loud voice for two hours, “Great is Diana of Ephesus!”

Pero cuando se dieron cuenta de que era Judío, un clamor se levantó de todos ellos, gritando como por dos horas: “¡Grande es Diana de los Efesios!”

35 O ne of the city leaders stopped the noise. He spoke, “Men of Ephesus, everyone knows our city is where the god of Diana is kept. That is the stone god that fell from the sky.

Entonces el secretario (que presidía las asambleas populares), después de calmar a la multitud, dijo: “Ciudadanos de Efeso, ¿hay acaso algún hombre que no sepa que la ciudad de los Efesios es guardiana del templo de la gran Diana y de la imagen que descendió del cielo ?

36 E veryone knows this is true, so you must not cry out or do anything foolish.

Puesto que estos hechos son innegables, deben guardar calma y no hacer nada precipitadamente.

37 T he men you brought here do not rob houses of worship or talk against our god.

Porque han traído a estos hombres que ni roban templos, ni blasfeman a nuestra diosa.

38 I f Demetrius and his workmen have something against anyone, we have special days for courts. Let them go to court.

Así pues, si Demetrio y los artífices que están con él tienen queja contra alguien, los tribunales están abiertos y los procónsules (gobernadores provinciales) dispuestos; presenten sus acusaciones unos contra otros.

39 I f you want anything else, it should be done in another meeting.

Pero si demandan algo más que esto, se decidirá en asamblea legítima.

40 W e are in danger of being asked about this trouble today. There is no good reason we can give for this meeting.”

Porque ciertamente corremos peligro de ser acusados de crear problemas en relación con lo acontecido hoy, ya que no existe causa justificada para esto, y por ello no podremos explicar este alboroto.”

41 W hen he had said this, he told them to leave.

Y habiendo dicho esto, despidió la asamblea.
