1 S aul was forty years old when he began to rule. He ruled over Israel thirty-two years.

Saúl tenía treinta años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó cuarenta y dos años sobre Israel.

2 S aul chose 3, 000 men of Israel. There were 2, 000 of them with Saul in Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel. And 1, 000 were with Jonathan at Gibeah of Benjamin. But he sent away the rest of the people, each to his tent.

Y Saúl escogió para sí 3, 000 hombres de Israel, de los cuales 2, 000 estaban con Saúl en Micmas y en la región montañosa de Betel (Casa de Dios), y 1, 000 estaban con Jonatán en Geba de Benjamín. Y al resto del pueblo lo despidió, cada uno a su tienda.

3 J onathan destroyed the place where the Philistine soldiers were in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. Then Saul sounded the horn through all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear.”

Jonatán hirió la guarnición de los Filisteos que estaba en Geba, y lo supieron los Filisteos. Entonces Saúl tocó la trompeta por toda la tierra diciendo: “Que lo oigan los Hebreos.”

4 A ll Israel heard the news that Saul had destroyed the place where the Philistine soldiers were. And they heard that Israel had become a hated thing to the Philistines. Then the people were called out to join Saul at Gilgal.

Y todo Israel oyó decir que Saúl había herido la guarnición de los Filisteos, y también que Israel se había hecho odioso a los Filisteos. Entonces el pueblo se reunió con Saúl en Gilgal.

5 T he Philistines gathered to fight against Israel, with 30, 000 war-wagons, 6, 000 horsemen, and people like the sand on the sea shore. They came and set up their tents at Michmash, east of Beth-aven.

Y los Filisteos se reunieron para pelear contra Israel: 30, 000 carros, 6, 000 hombres de a caballo y gente tan numerosa como la arena a la orilla del mar; y subieron y acamparon en Micmas, al oriente de Bet Avén.

6 T he men of Israel saw that they were in trouble. The people were in a place of danger. So the people hid themselves in caves, bushes, hill-sides, graves and wells.

Cuando los hombres de Israel vieron que estaban en un apuro, pues el pueblo estaba en gran aprieto, el pueblo se escondió en cuevas, en matorrales, en peñascos, en sótanos y en fosos.

7 S ome of the Hebrews crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. But as for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him in fear.

También algunos de los Hebreos pasaron el Jordán a la tierra de Gad y de Galaad. Pero Saúl estaba todavía en Gilgal, y todo el pueblo le seguía atemorizado.

8 S aul waited seven days, the time set by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal. And the people were leaving him.

El esperó siete días, conforme al tiempo que Samuel había señalado, pero Samuel no llegaba a Gilgal, y el pueblo se le dispersaba.

9 S o Saul said, “Bring me the burnt gift and the peace gifts.” And he gave the burnt gift to the Lord.

Entonces Saúl dijo: “Tráiganme el holocausto y las ofrendas de paz.” Y él ofreció el holocausto.

10 A s soon as he finished giving the burnt gift, Samuel came. Saul went out to meet him and say hello.

Tan pronto como terminó de ofrecer el holocausto, llegó Samuel; y Saúl salió a su encuentro para saludarle.

11 B ut Samuel said, “What have you done?” Saul said, “I saw that the people were leaving me. You did not come when you said you would. And the Philistines were gathering at Michmash.

Pero Samuel dijo: “¿Qué has hecho?” Y Saúl respondió: “Como vi que el pueblo se me dispersaba, que tú no llegabas dentro de los días señalados y que los Filisteos estaban reunidos en Micmas,

12 S o I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down upon me at Gilgal, and I have not asked for the Lord’s favor.’ So I made myself give the burnt gift.”

me dije: ‘Ahora los Filisteos descenderán contra mí en Gilgal, y no he implorado el favor del Señor.’ Así que me vi forzado, y ofrecí el holocausto.”

13 S amuel said to Saul, “You have done a foolish act. You have not kept the Law that the Lord your God gave you. For now the Lord would have made your rule over Israel last forever.

Samuel dijo a Saúl: “Has obrado neciamente; no has guardado el mandamiento que el Señor tu Dios te ordenó, pues ahora el Señor hubiera establecido tu reino sobre Israel para siempre.

14 B ut now your rule will not last. The Lord has found a man who is pleasing to him in every way. He has chosen him to rule over his people, because you have not obeyed the Lord.”

Pero ahora tu reino no perdurará. El Señor ha buscado para sí un hombre conforme a Su corazón, y el Señor lo ha designado como príncipe sobre Su pueblo porque tú no guardaste lo que el Señor te ordenó.”

15 T hen Samuel got up and went from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. Saul numbered the people that were left with him, about 600 men. No Swords or Spears

Entonces Samuel se levantó y subió de Gilgal a Guibeá de Benjamín. Y Saúl contó el pueblo que se hallaba con él, como 600 hombres.

16 S aul and his son Jonathan, and the people with them, stayed in Geba of Benjamin, while the Philistines stayed at Michmash.

Y Saúl, su hijo Jonatán y el pueblo que se hallaba con ellos, estaban situados en Geba de Benjamín, mientras los Filisteos acampaban en Micmas.

17 S oldiers came from the tents of the Philistines in three groups. One group turned toward Ophrah, to the land of Shual.

Y salió una avanzada del campamento de los Filisteos en tres compañías; una compañía se dirigió por el camino de Ofra, a la tierra de Sual;

18 A nother group turned toward Bethhoron. And another group turned toward the side of the country that looks over the valley of Zeboim toward the desert.

otra compañía se dirigió por el camino de Bet Horón, y la otra compañía se dirigió por el camino de la frontera que mira sobre el Valle de Zeboim, hacia el desierto.

19 N ow there was no one to be found in all the land of Israel who made things of iron. For the Philistines said, “The Hebrews might make swords or spears.”

En toda la tierra de Israel no podía hallarse ningún herrero, pues los Filisteos decían: “No sea que los Hebreos hagan espadas o lanzas.”

20 S o each one of the Israelites went down to the Philistines to get his plow, his pick, his ax, or his grain cutter sharpened.

Y todo Israel tenía que descender a los Filisteos, cada cual para afilar la reja de su arado, su azuela, su hacha o su azadón.

21 H e had to pay two-thirds part of a piece of silver to have the plows and picks sharpened, and one-third part of a piece of silver to have the axes and grain cutters sharpened.

El precio era dos tercios de siclo (8 gramos de plata) por las rejas de arado, las azuelas, las horquillas, las hachas, y para arreglar los azadones.

22 S o on the day of battle there was no sword or spear in the hands of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan. But Saul and his son Jonathan had them.

Y sucedió que en el día de la batalla, no había espada ni lanza en mano de ninguna de la gente que estaba con Saúl y Jonatán, sólo las tenían Saúl y su hijo Jonatán.

23 A nd the Philistine soldiers went out to the pass of Michmash.

Y la guarnición de los Filisteos salió hacia el paso de Micmas.
