1 S o the news of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines. They set up their tents beside Ebenezer while the Philistines stayed at Aphek.

La palabra de Samuel llegaba a todo Israel. Cuando Israel salió para enfrentarse en batalla con los Filisteos, acampó junto a Ebenezer, mientras que los Filisteos habían acampado en Afec.

2 T he Philistines came dressed for battle to meet Israel. When the battle spread, Israel lost to the Philistines. The Philistines killed about 4, 000 men on the battle-field.

Los Filisteos se pusieron en orden de batalla para enfrentarse a Israel. Entablado el combate, Israel fue derrotado delante de los Filisteos, quienes mataron como a 4, 000 hombres en el campo de batalla.

3 W hen the people returned to the tents, the leaders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord made us lose today to the Philistines? Let us bring the special box that holds the Law of the Lord here from Shiloh. Then He may come among us and save us from the power of those who fight against us.”

Cuando el pueblo volvió al campamento, los ancianos de Israel dijeron: “¿Por qué nos ha derrotado hoy el Señor delante de los Filisteos ? Tomemos con nosotros, de Silo, el arca del pacto del Señor, para que vaya en medio de nosotros y nos libre del poder de nuestros enemigos.”

4 S o the people sent men to Shiloh to take the special box with the Law of the Lord of All Who sits above the cherubim. Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the special box with the Law of God.

El pueblo envió gente a Silo, y trajeron de allí el arca del pacto del Señor de los ejércitos que está sobre los querubines. Los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, estaban allí con el arca del pacto de Dios.

5 W hen the box with the Law of the Lord came among the tents, all Israel called out with a loud noise, so that the earth shook.

Y aconteció que cuando el arca del pacto del Señor entró al campamento, todo Israel gritó con voz tan fuerte que la tierra tembló.

6 W hen the Philistines heard the noise, they said, “What does this loud noise among the Hebrews mean?” Then they understood that the special box of the Lord had come among the Israelites.

Al oír los Filisteos el ruido del clamor, dijeron: “¿Qué significa el ruido de este gran clamor en el campamento de los Hebreos?” Entonces comprendieron que el arca del Señor había llegado al campamento.

7 T he Philistines were afraid. They said, “A god has come among the tents. Trouble has come to us! Nothing like this has happened before.

Y los Filisteos tuvieron temor, pues dijeron: “Dios ha venido al campamento.” Y añadieron: “¡Ay de nosotros! Porque nada como esto ha sucedido antes.

8 T rouble has come to us! Who will save us from the hand of these powerful gods? These are the gods who destroyed the Egyptians with all kinds of troubles in the desert.

¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de la mano de estos dioses poderosos? Estos son los dioses que hirieron a los Egipcios en el desierto con toda clase de plagas.

9 B e strong and act like men, O Philistines. Or you will be made to work for the Hebrews, as they have been made to work for you. Be men and fight.”

Cobren ánimo y sean hombres, oh Filisteos, para que no lleguen a ser esclavos de los Hebreos como ellos han sido esclavos de ustedes. Sean hombres, pues, y peleen.”

10 S o the Philistines fought, and Israel lost. Every man ran to his tent. And many were killed, for 30, 000 foot soldiers of Israel fell.

Los Filisteos pelearon, Israel fue derrotado y cada cual huyó a su tienda; la mortandad fue muy grande, pues de Israel cayeron 30, 000 soldados de a pie.

11 T he special box of God was taken. And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died. Death of Eli

El arca de Dios fue capturada, y murieron Ofni y Finees, los dos hijos de Elí. Muerte de Elí

12 A man of Benjamin ran from the battle and came to Shiloh the same day. His clothes were torn and he had dust on his head.

Y un hombre de Benjamín corrió del campo de batalla, y llegó aquel mismo día a Silo, con sus vestidos rotos y polvo sobre su cabeza.

13 W hen he came, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for he was very worried about the special box of God. The man told the news in the city, and all the city cried out.

Cuando llegó, Elí estaba sentado en su asiento junto al camino esperando ansiosamente, porque su corazón temblaba por causa del arca de Dios. Así pues, el hombre fue a anunciar lo en la ciudad, y toda la ciudad prorrumpió en gritos.

14 W hen Eli heard the noise in the city, he said, “What does this noise mean?” Then the man came in a hurry and told Eli.

15 N ow Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were weak so that he could not see.

16 T he man said to Eli, “I have come from the battle. I ran from the battle today.” And Eli said, “How did it go, my son?”

17 T he one who brought the news answered, “Israel has run from the Philistines and there have been many people killed. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead. And the special box of God has been taken.”

El que trajo la noticia respondió: “Israel ha huido delante de los Filisteos, además ha habido gran matanza entre el pueblo, también han muerto tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees, y el arca de Dios ha sido tomada.”

18 W hen he told about the special box of God, Eli fell back off the seat by the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was old and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.

Cuando mencionó el arca de Dios, Elí cayó de su asiento hacia atrás, junto a la puerta, se rompió la nuca y murió, pues era entrado en años y pesaba mucho. Elí había juzgado a Israel durante cuarenta años.

19 N ow his daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was going to have a child and about to give birth. When she heard the news that the special box of God was taken and that her father-in-law and husband had died, she started to give birth, for her pains came upon her.

Su nuera, la mujer de Finees, estaba encinta y a punto de dar a luz, y al oír la noticia que el arca de Dios había sido tomada y que su suegro y su marido habían muerto, se arrodilló y dio a luz, porque le sobrevinieron los dolores de parto.

20 A bout the time of her death, the women who stood by her said to her, “Do not be afraid. For you have given birth to a son.” But she did not answer or listen to them.

Al tiempo que moría, las mujeres que estaban junto a ella le dijeron: “No temas, porque has dado a luz un hijo.” Ella no respondió ni prestó atención.

21 S he gave the boy the name Ichabod, saying, “The honor has left Israel,” because the special box of God was taken and because of her father-in-law and husband.

Pero llamó al niño Icabod (Sin gloria) y dijo: “¡Se ha ido la gloria de Israel!” por haber sido tomada el arca de Dios, y por la muerte de su suegro y de su marido.

22 S he said, “The honor has left Israel, for the special box of God was taken.”

Ella dijo: “Se ha ido la gloria de Israel, porque el arca de Dios ha sido tomada.”
