1 S o the news of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines. They set up their tents beside Ebenezer while the Philistines stayed at Aphek.

Samuel hablaba a todo Israel. Por aquel tiempo salió Israel a librar batalla con los filisteos, y acampó junto a Eben-ezer, mientras los filisteos acamparon en Afec.

2 T he Philistines came dressed for battle to meet Israel. When the battle spread, Israel lost to the Philistines. The Philistines killed about 4, 000 men on the battle-field.

Los filisteos presentaron batalla a Israel, y trabándose el combate, Israel fue vencido delante de los filisteos, los cuales hirieron en el campo de batalla como a cuatro mil hombres.

3 W hen the people returned to the tents, the leaders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord made us lose today to the Philistines? Let us bring the special box that holds the Law of the Lord here from Shiloh. Then He may come among us and save us from the power of those who fight against us.”

Cuando volvió el pueblo al campamento, los ancianos de Israel dijeron: «¿Por qué nos ha herido hoy Jehová delante de los filisteos? Vayamos a Silo y traigamos el Arca del pacto de Jehová, para que, estando en medio de nosotros, nos salve de manos de nuestros enemigos.»

4 S o the people sent men to Shiloh to take the special box with the Law of the Lord of All Who sits above the cherubim. Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the special box with the Law of God.

El pueblo envió gente a Silo, y trajeron de allá el Arca del pacto de Jehová de los ejércitos, que habitaba entre los querubines; y los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, estaban allí con el Arca del pacto de Dios.

5 W hen the box with the Law of the Lord came among the tents, all Israel called out with a loud noise, so that the earth shook.

Aconteció que cuando el Arca del pacto de Jehová llegó al campamento, todo Israel gritó con júbilo tan grande que la tierra tembló.

6 W hen the Philistines heard the noise, they said, “What does this loud noise among the Hebrews mean?” Then they understood that the special box of the Lord had come among the Israelites.

Al escuchar los filisteos las voces de júbilo dijeron: «¿Qué gritos de júbilo son estos en el campamento de los hebreos?» Y supieron que el Arca de Jehová había sido traída al campamento.

7 T he Philistines were afraid. They said, “A god has come among the tents. Trouble has come to us! Nothing like this has happened before.

Entonces los filisteos tuvieron miedo, porque se decían: «Ha venido Dios al campamento.» Y exclamaron: «¡Ay de nosotros!, pues hasta ahora no había sido así.

8 T rouble has come to us! Who will save us from the hand of these powerful gods? These are the gods who destroyed the Egyptians with all kinds of troubles in the desert.

¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de manos de estos dioses poderosos? Éstos son los dioses que hirieron a Egipto con toda clase de plagas en el desierto.

9 B e strong and act like men, O Philistines. Or you will be made to work for the Hebrews, as they have been made to work for you. Be men and fight.”

Esforzaos, filisteos, y sed hombres, para que no sirváis a los hebreos, como ellos os han servido a vosotros; sed hombres, y pelead.»

10 S o the Philistines fought, and Israel lost. Every man ran to his tent. And many were killed, for 30, 000 foot soldiers of Israel fell.

Pelearon, pues, los filisteos, e Israel fue vencido; cada cual huyó a su tienda y hubo una muy grande mortandad, pues cayeron de Israel treinta mil hombres de a pie.

11 T he special box of God was taken. And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died. Death of Eli

El Arca de Dios fue tomada y murieron los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees.

12 A man of Benjamin ran from the battle and came to Shiloh the same day. His clothes were torn and he had dust on his head.

Un hombre de Benjamín salió corriendo del campo de batalla y llegó aquel mismo día a Silo, rotos sus vestidos y la cabeza cubierta de tierra.

13 W hen he came, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for he was very worried about the special box of God. The man told the news in the city, and all the city cried out.

Cuando llegó, Elí estaba sentado en una silla vigilando junto al camino, porque su corazón temblaba a causa del Arca de Dios. Vino, pues, aquel hombre a la ciudad y, al dar las noticias, toda la ciudad gritó.

14 W hen Eli heard the noise in the city, he said, “What does this noise mean?” Then the man came in a hurry and told Eli.

Cuando Elí oyó el estruendo de la gritería, preguntó: —¿Por qué hay tanto alboroto? Aquel hombre vino de prisa y le dio las noticias a Elí.

15 N ow Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were weak so that he could not see.

Ya éste tenía noventa y ocho años de edad y sus ojos se habían oscurecido, de modo que no podía ver.

16 T he man said to Eli, “I have come from the battle. I ran from the battle today.” And Eli said, “How did it go, my son?”

Dijo, pues, aquel hombre a Elí: —Vengo de la batalla, he escapado hoy del combate. —¿Qué ha acontecido, hijo mío? —le preguntó Elí.

17 T he one who brought the news answered, “Israel has run from the Philistines and there have been many people killed. Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead. And the special box of God has been taken.”

El mensajero respondió: —Israel huyó delante de los filisteos y hubo gran mortandad entre el pueblo. Han muerto también tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees, y el Arca de Dios ha sido tomada.

18 W hen he told about the special box of God, Eli fell back off the seat by the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was old and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.

Cuando el mensajero hizo mención del Arca de Dios, Elí cayó de su silla hacia atrás, al lado de la puerta, y se desnucó y murió, pues era hombre viejo y pesado. Había sido juez en Israel durante cuarenta años.

19 N ow his daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was going to have a child and about to give birth. When she heard the news that the special box of God was taken and that her father-in-law and husband had died, she started to give birth, for her pains came upon her.

Su nuera, la mujer de Finees, estaba encinta y próxima al alumbramiento. Cuando oyó el rumor de que el Arca de Dios había sido tomada y que su suegro y su marido habían muerto, se inclinó y dio a luz, pues le sobrevinieron sus dolores de repente.

20 A bout the time of her death, the women who stood by her said to her, “Do not be afraid. For you have given birth to a son.” But she did not answer or listen to them.

Al tiempo que moría, las que estaban junto a ella le decían: «No tengas temor, porque has dado a luz un hijo.» Pero ella no respondió ni se dio por enterada.

21 S he gave the boy the name Ichabod, saying, “The honor has left Israel,” because the special box of God was taken and because of her father-in-law and husband.

Y llamó al niño Icabod, diciendo: «¡La gloria ha sido desterrada de Israel!», por haber sido tomada el Arca de Dios y por la muerte de su suegro y de su marido.

22 S he said, “The honor has left Israel, for the special box of God was taken.”

Dijo, pues: «La gloria ha sido desterrada de Israel», porque había sido tomada el Arca de Dios.
