1 T he Lord said to Joshua,

Habló Jehová a Josué diciendo:

2 “ Say to the people of Israel, ‘Choose the cities where you may go and be safe when you are in trouble, as I said to you through Moses.

«Habla a los hijos de Israel, y diles: Señalaos las ciudades de refugio, de las cuales yo os hablé por medio de Moisés,

3 S o the man who kills any person without meaning to or planning to may run to one of these cities. They will be places where you can go to be safe from the one who wants to punish you for the killing.

para que se acoja allí el homicida que mate a alguien por accidente y no a propósito; y os servirán de refugio contra el vengador de la sangre.

4 H e will run to one of these cities and stand at the city gate. There he will tell his story to the leaders of that city. They will take him into the city and give him a place. So he may live among them.

Y el que se acoja a alguna de aquellas ciudades, se presentará a la puerta de la ciudad y expondrá sus razones en oídos de los ancianos de aquella ciudad; y ellos lo recibirán consigo dentro de la ciudad y le darán lugar para que habite con ellos.

5 I f the one who wants to punish him comes after him, they will not give him the one who killed the person, because he killed his neighbor without planning to, and did not hate him in the past.

Si el vengador de la sangre lo sigue, no entregarán en su mano al homicida, por cuanto hirió a su prójimo por accidente y antes no tuvo con él ninguna enemistad.

6 H e will live in that city until he has been tried in front of the people. And he will live there until the death of the one who is the head religious leader at the time. Then the one who killed the person may return to his own city and his own house, to the city he ran away from.’”

Y quedará en aquella ciudad hasta que comparezca en juicio delante de la congregación, y hasta la muerte del que sea sumo sacerdote en aquel tiempo; entonces el homicida podrá volver a su ciudad y a su casa, y a la ciudad de donde huyó.»

7 S o they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali. They set apart Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim. And they set apart Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.

Entonces señalaron a Cedes en Galilea, en el monte de Neftalí, Siquem en los montes de Efraín, y Quiriat-arba (que es Hebrón) en los montes de Judá.

8 O n the other side of the Jordan east of Jericho, they set apart Bezer in the desert plain from the family of Reuben. They set apart Ramoth in Gilead from the family of Gad. And they set apart Golan in Bashan from the family of Manasseh.

Y al otro lado del Jordán, al oriente de Jericó, señalaron a Beser en el desierto, en la llanura de la tribu de Rubén, Ramot en Galaad de la tribu de Gad, y Golán en Basán de la tribu de Manasés.

9 T hese were the chosen cities for all the people of Israel and for the stranger staying among them. So whoever killed any person without meaning to could run there. He could not be killed by the one who wanted to punish him, before standing trial in front of the people.

Éstas fueron las ciudades señaladas para todos los hijos de Israel y para el extranjero que habitara entre ellos, para que se acogiese a ellas cualquiera que hiriera a alguno por accidente, a fin de que no muriese por mano del vengador de la sangre, hasta comparecer delante de la congregación.
