1 N ow Shaphatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah heard Jeremiah telling all the people,

Oyeron Sefatías hijo de Matán, Gedalías hijo de Pasur, Jucal hijo de Selemías y Pasur hijo de Malquías, las palabras que Jeremías hablaba a todo el pueblo, diciendo:

2 “ The Lord says, ‘He who stays in this city will die by the sword and by hunger and by disease. But he who goes over to the Babylonians will live. He will get away with his life and live.’

«Así ha dicho Jehová: El que se quede en esta ciudad morirá a espada, de hambre o de peste; pero el que se pase a los caldeos, vivirá. Su vida le será por botín, y vivirá.

3 T he Lord says, ‘For sure this city will be given to the army of the king of Babylon, and he will take it.’”

Así ha dicho Jehová: De cierto será entregada esta ciudad en manos del ejército del rey de Babilonia, y la tomará.»

4 T hen the leaders said to the king, “Now let this man be put to death. For he is making the hearts of the men of war weak who are left in this city, and of all the people, by saying such words to them. This man does not care about the well-being of these people, but instead wants them hurt.”

Y dijeron los jefes al rey: «Muera ahora este hombre; porque de esta manera hace desmayar las manos de los hombres de guerra que han quedado en esta ciudad, y las manos de todo el pueblo, hablándoles tales palabras; porque este hombre no busca la paz de este pueblo, sino el mal.»

5 S o King Zedekiah said, “He is in your hands. The king can do nothing against you.”

Dijo el rey Sedequías: «Él está en vuestras manos, pues el rey nada puede hacer contra vosotros.»

6 S o they took Jeremiah and put him into the well of Malchijah the king’s son, in the open space of the prison, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the well, but only mud. And Jeremiah went down into the mud.

Entonces tomaron ellos a Jeremías y lo hicieron meter en la cisterna de Malquías hijo de Hamelec, que estaba en el patio de la cárcel. Bajaron a Jeremías con sogas a la cisterna, en la que no había agua, sino barro; y se hundió Jeremías en el barro.

7 B ut Ebedmelech, an Ethiopian servant of the king who had been made so he could not have children, heard in the king’s house that they had put Jeremiah into the well. Now the king was sitting in the Gate of Benjamin.

Oyó Ebed-melec, un etíope, eunuco de la casa real, que habían puesto a Jeremías en la cisterna; y estando sentado el rey a la puerta de Benjamín,

8 A nd Ebedmelech went from the king’s house and said to him,

Ebed-melec salió de la casa del rey y habló al rey, diciendo:

9 “ My lord the king, these men have been very sinful in all they have done to Jeremiah the man of God. They have put him in the well. And he will die there of hunger, for there is no more bread in the city.”

«Mi señor, el rey, mal hicieron estos hombres en todo lo que han hecho con el profeta Jeremías, al cual hicieron meter en la cisterna; porque allí morirá de hambre, pues no hay más pan en la ciudad.»

10 T hen the king told Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, “I am giving you the power to take thirty men with you, and bring Jeremiah the man of God up from the well before he dies.”

Entonces mandó el rey al mismo etíope Ebed-melec, diciendo: «Toma contigo treinta hombres de aquí y haz sacar al profeta Jeremías de la cisterna, antes que muera.»

11 S o Ebed-melech as the leader took the men with him and went into the king’s house to a place under the store-room. He took from there old pieces of cloth and worn-out clothes and let them down by ropes to Jeremiah in the well.

Tomó, pues, Ebed-melec consigo a los hombres y entró en la casa del rey, debajo de la tesorería; tomó de allí trapos viejos, raídos y andrajosos, y con unas sogas los echó a Jeremías en la cisterna.

12 T hen Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Put the clothes and pieces of cloth between your arms and the ropes,” and Jeremiah did so.

Y dijo el etíope Ebed-melec a Jeremías: «Ponte ahora esos trapos viejos, raídos y andrajosos bajo los sobacos, por debajo de las sogas.» Y lo hizo así Jeremías.

13 T hen they pulled Jeremiah up with the ropes and lifted him out of the well. And Jeremiah stayed in the open space of the prison. Zedekiah Asks Jeremiah about Future Happenings

De este modo sacaron con sogas a Jeremías y lo subieron de la cisterna. Y quedó Jeremías en el patio de la cárcel. Sedequías consulta secretamente a Jeremías

14 K ing Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the man of God and had him brought to him at the third door of the house of the Lord. And the king said to him, “I am going to ask you something. Do not hide anything from me.”

Después el rey Sedequías mandó traer al profeta Jeremías a su presencia, en la tercera entrada de la casa de Jehová. Y dijo el rey a Jeremías: —Te haré una pregunta; no me ocultes ninguna cosa.

15 J eremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, will you not kill me? Even if I speak wise words to you, you will not listen to me.”

Jeremías dijo a Sedequías: —Si te lo declaro, ¿no es cierto que me matarás? Y si te doy consejo, no me escucharás.

16 B ut King Zedekiah promised Jeremiah in secret, “As the Lord lives, Who gave us life, for sure I will not kill you or give you over to these men who want to kill you.”

Juró el rey Sedequías en secreto a Jeremías, diciendo: —¡Vive Jehová que nos hizo esta alma, que no te mataré ni te entregaré en manos de esos hombres que buscan tu vida!

17 T hen Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord God of All, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you will go out to the captains of the king of Babylon, then you will live. This city will not be burned with fire, and you and those of your house will live.

Entonces dijo Jeremías a Sedequías: —Así ha dicho Jehová, Dios de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel: “Si te entregas en seguida a los jefes del rey de Babilonia, tu alma vivirá y esta ciudad no será incendiada; vivirás tú y tu casa.

18 B ut if you will not go out to the captains of the king of Babylon, then this city will be given to the Babylonians. They will burn it with fire, and you will not get away from them.’”

Pero si no te entregas a los jefes del rey de Babilonia, esta ciudad será entregada en manos de los caldeos; ellos la incendiarán, y tú no escaparás de sus manos.”

19 K ing Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have gone over to the Babylonians. I am afraid I will be given over to them, and that they will make it hard for me.”

Y dijo el rey Sedequías a Jeremías: —Tengo temor de que los judíos que se han pasado a los caldeos me entreguen en sus manos y hagan burla de mí.

20 B ut Jeremiah said, “They will not give you to them. Obey the Lord by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well with you and you will live.

Dijo Jeremías: —No te entregarán. Oye ahora la voz de Jehová que yo te hablo, y te irá bien y vivirás.

21 B ut if you will not go out, this is the word which the Lord has shown me:

Pero si no quieres entregarte, ésta es la palabra que me ha mostrado Jehová:

22 ‘ All of the women left in the house of the king of Judah are going to be brought out to the captains of the king of Babylon. And these women will say, “Your trusted friends have lied to you and have become stronger than you. Now when your feet have gone down into the mud, they turn away from you.”

Todas las mujeres que han quedado en casa del rey de Judá serán entregadas a los jefes del rey de Babilonia, y ellas mismas dirán: »“Te han engañado, y han prevalecido contra ti tus amigos; hundieron en el barro tus pies, se volvieron atrás.”

23 A ll your wives and your sons will be led out to the Babylonians. And you yourself will not get away from them. The king of Babylon will take hold of you, and this city will be burned with fire.’”

»Entregarán, pues, todas tus mujeres y tus hijos a los caldeos, y tú no escaparás de sus manos, sino que serás entregado al poder del rey de Babilonia, el cual prenderá fuego a esta ciudad.

24 T hen Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no one know about these words and you will not die.

Dijo Sedequías a Jeremías: —Nadie sepa estas palabras, y no morirás.

25 T he leaders might hear that I have talked with you, and come and say to you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king, and what the king said to you. Do not hide it from us, and we will not kill you.’

Y si los jefes oyen que yo he hablado contigo, y vienen a ti a decirte: “Decláranos ahora qué hablaste con el rey; no nos lo ocultes, y no te mataremos; y dinos también qué te dijo el rey”,

26 T hen you must tell them, ‘I was asking the king not to make me return to the house of Jonathan to die there.’”

les dirás: “Supliqué al rey que no me hiciera volver a casa de Jonatán, para que no me muriera allí.”

27 A ll the leaders did come to Jeremiah to ask him questions. So he said to them everything the king had told him to say. And they stopped speaking with him, because the words he and the king had spoken together had not been heard by anyone else.

Vinieron luego, en efecto, todos los jefes a Jeremías y lo interrogaron. Él les respondió conforme a todo lo que el rey le había mandado. Con esto se alejaron de él, porque el asunto había sido oído.

28 S o Jeremiah stayed in the open space of the prison until the day Jerusalem was taken.

Y quedó Jeremías en el patio de la cárcel hasta el día que fue tomada Jerusalén. Allí estaba cuando Jerusalén fue tomada.
