1 I n the seventh month, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the king’s family, came to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam at Mizpah. He came with one of the head captains of the king, and ten other men. While they were eating bread together there in Mizpah,

Aconteció en el mes séptimo que Ismael hijo de Netanías hijo de Elisama, de la descendencia real, junto con algunos oficiales del rey y diez hombres, vino a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam, en Mizpa. Y juntos comieron pan en Mizpa.

2 I shmael the son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him rose up and killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword. They killed the one whom the king of Babylon had chosen to rule the land.

De pronto se levantó Ismael hijo de Netanías, y los diez hombres que con él estaban, e hirieron a espada a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam hijo de Safán, matando así a aquel a quien el rey de Babilonia había puesto para gobernar la tierra.

3 I shmael also killed all the Jews who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, and the Babylonian soldiers who were found there.

Asimismo mató Ismael a todos los judíos que estaban con Gedalías en Mizpa, y a los soldados caldeos que allí estaban.

4 T he next day, before anyone knew that Gedaliah had been killed,

Sucedió además, al día siguiente de haber matado a Gedalías, cuando aún nadie lo sabía,

5 e ighty men came from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria. Their hair was cut from their faces, their clothes were torn, and their bodies were cut. They came with grain gifts and special perfume in their hands to bring to the house of the Lord.

que llegaron unos hombres de Siquem, de Silo y de Samaria. Eran ochenta hombres, con la barba rapada, las ropas rasgadas y llenos de rasguños, que en sus manos traían ofrendas e incienso para llevar a la casa de Jehová.

6 T hen Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, crying as he went. As he met them he said, “Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.”

De Mizpa les salió al encuentro, llorando, Ismael hijo de Netanías. Y aconteció que cuando los encontró, les dijo: «¡Venid a presentaros a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam!»

7 W hen they came inside the city, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him killed them, and threw them into the well.

Cuando ya habían entrado en la ciudad, Ismael hijo de Netanías, junto con sus hombres, los degollaron y los arrojaron a una cisterna.

8 B ut there were ten men among them who said to Ishmael, “Do not kill us! For we have stores of grain, barley, oil and honey hidden in the field.” So he did not kill them with their friends.

Pero entre aquellos había diez hombres que dijeron a Ismael: «No nos mates, porque tenemos en el campo reservas de trigo, cebada, aceite y miel.» Y no los mató como había hecho con sus hermanos.

9 T he well where Ishmael had thrown all the bodies of the men he had killed because of Gedaliah was the one that King Asa had made because of his fear of Baasha, king of Israel. Ishmael the son the Nethaniah filled it with the dead.

La cisterna a la que Ismael arrojó los cuerpos de todos los hombres que mató a causa de Gedalías, era la misma que había hecho el rey Asa a causa de Baasa, rey de Israel. Ismael hijo de Netanías la llenó de muertos.

10 T hen he put all the rest of the Jews in chains who were in Mizpah, the king’s daughters and all the people left in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan, the captain of the prison soldiers, had put under the rule of Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. Then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah took them and started to cross over to the sons of Ammon.

Después Ismael llevó cautivo a todo el resto del pueblo que estaba en Mizpa, a las hijas del rey y a todo el pueblo que había quedado en Mizpa, el cual había encargado Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam. Los llevó, pues, cautivos Ismael hijo de Netanías y se fue para pasarse a los hijos de Amón.

11 B ut Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the armies that were with him, heard about all the bad things that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done.

Johanán hijo de Carea y todos los capitanes de la gente de guerra que estaban con él oyeron todo el mal que había hecho Ismael hijo de Netanías.

12 S o they took all the men and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah. They found him by the large pool in Gibeon.

Entonces tomaron a todos los hombres y fueron a pelear contra Ismael hijo de Netanías, a quien hallaron junto al gran estanque que está en Gabaón.

13 W hen all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and the captains of the armies with him, they were glad.

Y sucedió que cuando todo el pueblo que estaba con Ismael vio a Johanán hijo de Carea, y a todos los capitanes de la gente de guerra que estaban con él, se alegraron.

14 S o all the people Ishmael had taken from Mizpah turned around and came back, and went to Johanan the son of Kareah.

Y todo el pueblo que Ismael había traído cautivo de Mizpa se volvió y fue con Johanán hijo de Carea.

15 B ut Ishmael the son of Nethaniah got away from Johanan with eight men and went to the sons of Ammon.

Pero Ismael hijo de Netanías y otros ocho hombres escaparon delante de Johanán y se fueron con los hijos de Amón.

16 T hen Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the armies that were with him took all the rest of the people whom Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had taken away from Mizpah after he had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. They took the soldiers, the women, the children, and the servants, whom Johanan had brought back from Gibeon,

Entonces Johanán hijo de Carea, junto con todos los capitanes de la gente de guerra que con él estaban, tomaron a todo el resto del pueblo, el cual habían recobrado de Ismael hijo de Netanías, que se lo había llevado de Mizpa después de matar a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam. Eran hombres de guerra, mujeres, niños y eunucos, que Johanán había traído de Gabaón.

17 a nd they went and stayed in GeruthChimham near Bethlehem. They were on their way to Egypt

Fueron y habitaron en Gerut-quimam, que está cerca de Belén, con el fin de continuar su camino hasta entrar en Egipto,

18 b ecause of the Babylonians. For they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had chosen to rule the land.
