1 T here was a man named Nicodemus. He was a proud religious law-keeper and a leader of the Jews.

Había un hombre de los fariseos que se llamaba Nicodemo, dignatario de los judíos.

2 H e came to Jesus at night and said, “Teacher, we know You have come from God to teach us. No one can do these powerful works You do unless God is with Him.” Jesus Tells of the New Kind of Birth

Éste vino a Jesús de noche y le dijo: —Rabí, sabemos que has venido de Dios como maestro, porque nadie puede hacer estas señales que tú haces, si no está Dios con él.

3 J esus said to him, “For sure, I tell you, unless a man is born again, he cannot see the holy nation of God.”

Le respondió Jesús: —De cierto, de cierto te digo que el que no nace de nuevo no puede ver el reino de Dios.

4 N icodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? How can he get into his mother’s body and be born the second time?”

Nicodemo le preguntó: —¿Cómo puede un hombre nacer siendo viejo? ¿Puede acaso entrar por segunda vez en el vientre de su madre y nacer?

5 J esus answered, “For sure, I tell you, unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit of God, he cannot get into the holy nation of God.

Respondió Jesús: —De cierto, de cierto te digo que el que no nace de agua y del Espíritu no puede entrar en el reino de Dios.

6 W hatever is born of the flesh is flesh. Whatever is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Lo que nace de la carne, carne es; y lo que nace del Espíritu, espíritu es.

7 “ Do not be surprised that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’

No te maravilles de que te dije: “Os es necesario nacer de nuevo.”

8 T he wind blows where it wants to and you hear its sound. You do not know where it comes from or where it goes. It is the same with everyone who is born of the Spirit of God.”

El viento sopla de donde quiere, y oyes su sonido, pero no sabes de dónde viene ni a dónde va. Así es todo aquel que nace del Espíritu.

9 N icodemus said to Him, “How can this be?”

Le preguntó Nicodemo: —¿Cómo puede hacerse esto?

10 J esus said, “Are you a teacher among the Jews and do not know these things?

Jesús le respondió: —Tú, que eres el maestro de Israel, ¿no sabes esto?

11 F or sure, I tell you, We are talking about things We know. We tell of what We have seen. Yet you do not take Our words to be true.

De cierto, de cierto te digo que de lo que sabemos, hablamos, y de lo que hemos visto, testificamos; pero no recibís nuestro testimonio.

12 I tell you about things of the earth and you do not believe them. How will you believe if I tell you things about heaven?

Si os he dicho cosas terrenales y no creéis, ¿cómo creeréis si os digo las celestiales?

13 “ No one has gone up into heaven except the One Who came down from heaven. That One is the Son of Man Who is in heaven.

Nadie subió al cielo sino el que descendió del cielo, el Hijo del hombre, que está en el cielo.

14 A s Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up.

Y como Moisés levantó la serpiente en el desierto, así es necesario que el Hijo del hombre sea levantado,

15 T hen whoever puts his trust in Him will have life that lasts forever.

para que todo aquel que en él cree no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna. De tal manera amó Dios al mundo

16 F or God so loved the world that He gave His only Son. Whoever puts his trust in God’s Son will not be lost but will have life that lasts forever.

»De tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que ha dado a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo aquel que en él cree no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna.

17 F or God did not send His Son into the world to say it is guilty. He sent His Son so the world might be saved from the punishment of sin by Him.

Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para que el mundo sea salvo por él.

18 W hoever puts his trust in His Son is not guilty. Whoever does not put his trust in Him is guilty already. It is because he does not put his trust in the name of the only Son of God.

El que en él cree no es condenado; pero el que no cree ya ha sido condenado, porque no ha creído en el nombre del unigénito Hijo de Dios.

19 “ The Light has come into the world. And the Light is the test by which men are guilty or not. People love darkness more than the Light because the things they do are sinful.

Y ésta es la condenación: la luz vino al mundo, pero los hombres amaron más las tinieblas que la luz, porque sus obras eran malas,

20 E veryone who sins hates the Light. He stays away from the Light because his sin would be found out.

pues todo aquel que hace lo malo detesta la luz y no viene a la luz, para que sus obras no sean puestas al descubierto.

21 T he man who does what is right comes to the Light. What he does will be seen because he has done what God wanted him to do.” Jesus Preaches in Judea

Pero el que practica la verdad viene a la luz, para que se ponga de manifiesto que sus obras son hechas en Dios. El amigo del esposo

22 A fter this, Jesus and His followers came into the country of Judea. He stayed with them there and baptized people. John the Baptist Tells More about Jesus

Después de esto vino Jesús con sus discípulos a tierras de Judea, y estuvo allí con ellos y bautizaba.

23 J ohn was baptizing in the town of Aenon near Salim. There was much water there and people were coming to be baptized.

También Juan bautizaba en Enón, junto a Salim, porque había allí muchas aguas. Y la gente llegaba y se bautizaba,

24 J ohn had not been put in prison yet.

pues aún no habían encarcelado a Juan.

25 T hen some of the followers of John and a Jew started to argue about the religious washing of the Jewish worship.

Entonces se produjo una discusión entre los discípulos de Juan y algunos judíos acerca de la purificación.

26 T hey came to John and said to him, “Teacher, the One with you on the other side of the Jordan River is baptizing also. He is the One you told of. Everyone is going to Him.”

Y vinieron a Juan y le dijeron: —Rabí, el que estaba contigo al otro lado del Jordán, de quien tú diste testimonio, él también bautiza, y todos van a él.

27 J ohn said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.

Respondió Juan: —No puede el hombre recibir nada a menos que le sea dado del cielo.

28 Y ou heard the words that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before Him.’

Vosotros mismos me sois testigos de que dije: “Yo no soy el Cristo, sino que soy enviado delante de él.”

29 T he man who has just been married has the bride. The friend of the man just married stands at his side and listens to him. He has joy when he hears the voice of the man just married. I am full of this joy.

El que tiene a la esposa es el esposo; pero el amigo del esposo, el que está a su lado y lo oye, se goza grandemente de la voz del esposo. Por eso, mi gozo está completo.

30 H e must become more important. I must become less important.

Es necesario que él crezca, y que yo disminuya. El que viene de arriba

31 “ He Who comes from above is above all. He who comes from the earth is of the earth and speaks of the earth. He Who comes from heaven is above all.

El que viene de arriba está por encima de todos; el que es de la tierra es terrenal y habla de cosas terrenales. El que viene del cielo está por encima de todos,

32 H e tells of what He has seen and heard. But no one believes what He says.

y de lo que ha visto y oído testifica, pero nadie recibe su testimonio.

33 W hoever receives His words proves that God is true.

El que recibe su testimonio, ése atestigua que Dios es veraz,

34 H e was sent by God and He speaks God’s Word. God gives Him all of His Spirit.

porque aquel a quien Dios envió, las palabras de Dios habla, pues Dios no da el Espíritu por medida.

35 T he Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.

El Padre ama al Hijo y ha entregado todas las cosas en su mano.

36 H e who puts his trust in the Son has life that lasts forever. He who does not put his trust in the Son will not have life, but the anger of God is on him.”

El que cree en el Hijo tiene vida eterna; pero el que se niega a creer en el Hijo no verá la vida, sino que la ira de Dios está sobre él.
