1 N ow Shaphatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah heard Jeremiah telling all the people,

Sefatías hijo de Matán, Gedalías hijo de Pasjur, Jucal hijo de Selemías, y Pasjur hijo de Malquías, se enteraron de los mensajes que Jeremías daba a todo el pueblo, y de que les decía:

2 “ The Lord says, ‘He who stays in this city will die by the sword and by hunger and by disease. But he who goes over to the Babylonians will live. He will get away with his life and live.’

«Así ha dicho el Señor: “El que se quede en esta ciudad morirá a filo de espada, o de hambre, o de peste. Pero el que se pase al bando de los caldeos, vivirá. Su vida será su botín de guerra, y quedará con vida.”

3 T he Lord says, ‘For sure this city will be given to the army of the king of Babylon, and he will take it.’”

»Así ha dicho el Señor: “No hay duda. Esta ciudad será conquistada, y caerá en manos del ejército del rey de Babilonia.”»

4 T hen the leaders said to the king, “Now let this man be put to death. For he is making the hearts of the men of war weak who are left in this city, and of all the people, by saying such words to them. This man does not care about the well-being of these people, but instead wants them hurt.”

Por eso los príncipes le dijeron al rey: «¡Este hombre merece la muerte! Con sus palabras desanima a los soldados que aún quedan en la ciudad, lo mismo que a todo el pueblo. ¡Este hombre no busca la paz del pueblo, sino su mal!»

5 S o King Zedekiah said, “He is in your hands. The king can do nothing against you.”

El rey Sedequías les respondió: «Ahí lo tienen, en sus manos. Aunque soy el rey, nada puedo hacer contra ustedes.»

6 S o they took Jeremiah and put him into the well of Malchijah the king’s son, in the open space of the prison, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the well, but only mud. And Jeremiah went down into the mud.

Entonces ellos le echaron mano a Jeremías y lo arrojaron en la cisterna de Malquías hijo de Hamelec, la cual estaba en el patio de la cárcel. Lo bajaron con sogas, y como en la cisterna no había agua, sino cieno, Jeremías quedó hundido en el cieno.

7 B ut Ebedmelech, an Ethiopian servant of the king who had been made so he could not have children, heard in the king’s house that they had put Jeremiah into the well. Now the king was sitting in the Gate of Benjamin.

Un etíope llamado Ébed Mélec, que era eunuco de la casa real, se enteró de que Jeremías había sido puesto en la cisterna. Mientras el rey estaba sentado a la puerta de Benjamín,

8 A nd Ebedmelech went from the king’s house and said to him,

Ébed Mélec salió del palacio y fue a hablar con el rey. Le dijo:

9 “ My lord the king, these men have been very sinful in all they have done to Jeremiah the man of God. They have put him in the well. And he will die there of hunger, for there is no more bread in the city.”

«Mi señor y rey, todo lo que estos hombres han hecho con el profeta Jeremías está muy mal. Lo han echado en la cisterna, y allí se morirá de hambre, pues ya no hay pan en la ciudad.»

10 T hen the king told Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, “I am giving you the power to take thirty men with you, and bring Jeremiah the man of God up from the well before he dies.”

Entonces el rey mandó al mismo etíope Ébed Mélec que tomara treinta hombres de la corte, y que fuera a sacar de la cisterna al profeta Jeremías, antes de que se muriera.

11 S o Ebed-melech as the leader took the men with him and went into the king’s house to a place under the store-room. He took from there old pieces of cloth and worn-out clothes and let them down by ropes to Jeremiah in the well.

Ébed Mélec se puso al mando de esos hombres, y entró en la tesorería, que estaba en la parte baja del palacio del rey, y tomó de allí trapos viejos y ropas raídas y andrajosas, y con unas sogas las echó a la cisterna donde estaba Jeremías.

12 T hen Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Put the clothes and pieces of cloth between your arms and the ropes,” and Jeremiah did so.

Luego el etíope Ébed Mélec instruyó a Jeremías: «Ponte ahora estos trapos viejos, y estas ropas raídas y andrajosas, debajo de los sobacos, para que no te lastimen las sogas.» Y Jeremías lo hizo así.

13 T hen they pulled Jeremiah up with the ropes and lifted him out of the well. And Jeremiah stayed in the open space of the prison. Zedekiah Asks Jeremiah about Future Happenings

De ese modo, con sogas sacaron a Jeremías de la cisterna, y Jeremías se quedó en el patio de la cárcel. Sedequías consulta a Jeremías

14 K ing Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the man of God and had him brought to him at the third door of the house of the Lord. And the king said to him, “I am going to ask you something. Do not hide anything from me.”

Después de eso, el rey Sedequías ordenó que llevaran al profeta Jeremías a su presencia, y lo recibió en la tercera entrada de la casa del Señor. Allí el rey le dijo a Jeremías: «Voy a hacerte una pregunta, y quiero que me digas la verdad.»

15 J eremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, will you not kill me? Even if I speak wise words to you, you will not listen to me.”

Jeremías le respondió: «Si te digo la verdad, ordenarás que me maten. Y si te doy un consejo, no vas a hacerme caso.»

16 B ut King Zedekiah promised Jeremiah in secret, “As the Lord lives, Who gave us life, for sure I will not kill you or give you over to these men who want to kill you.”

El rey Sedequías le hizo a Jeremías un juramento secreto. Le dijo: «Te juro por el Señor, que nos dio la vida, que no te mataré ni te pondré en manos de esos hombres que quieren matarte.»

17 T hen Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord God of All, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you will go out to the captains of the king of Babylon, then you will live. This city will not be burned with fire, and you and those of your house will live.

Entonces Jeremías le dijo a Sedequías: «Así ha dicho el Señor y Dios de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: “Si te entregas enseguida a los príncipes del rey de Babilonia, seguirás con vida y esta ciudad no será incendiada. Tú y los tuyos seguirán con vida.

18 B ut if you will not go out to the captains of the king of Babylon, then this city will be given to the Babylonians. They will burn it with fire, and you will not get away from them.’”

Pero si no te entregas a los príncipes del rey de Babilonia, esta ciudad caerá en manos de los caldeos, y ellos le prenderán fuego, y tú no podrás escapar de sus manos.”»

19 K ing Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have gone over to the Babylonians. I am afraid I will be given over to them, and that they will make it hard for me.”

El rey Sedequías le contestó: «Jeremías, tengo miedo de los judíos que se han pasado al bando de los caldeos. Tal vez me entreguen en sus manos y me pongan en ridículo.»

20 B ut Jeremiah said, “They will not give you to them. Obey the Lord by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well with you and you will live.

Pero Jeremías le dijo: «No te entregarán. Si atiendes a la voz del Señor, y a lo que yo te digo, te irá bien y vivirás.

21 B ut if you will not go out, this is the word which the Lord has shown me:

Pero si te niegas a entregarte, esto es lo que el Señor me ha revelado:

22 ‘ All of the women left in the house of the king of Judah are going to be brought out to the captains of the king of Babylon. And these women will say, “Your trusted friends have lied to you and have become stronger than you. Now when your feet have gone down into the mud, they turn away from you.”

Todas las mujeres que han quedado en el palacio real de Judá serán entregadas a los príncipes del rey de Babilonia, y ellas mismas dirán: “Tus amigos te engañaron, y te han vencido. Hundieron tus pies en el cieno, y luego te abandonaron.”

23 A ll your wives and your sons will be led out to the Babylonians. And you yourself will not get away from them. The king of Babylon will take hold of you, and this city will be burned with fire.’”

Entonces todas tus mujeres y tus hijos serán entregados a los caldeos, y tú no escaparás de sus manos, sino que el rey de Babilonia mismo te hará prisionero, y a esta ciudad le prenderán fuego.»

24 T hen Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no one know about these words and you will not die.

Sedequías le dijo a Jeremías: «Si no quieres morir, nadie debe enterarse de esto.

25 T he leaders might hear that I have talked with you, and come and say to you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king, and what the king said to you. Do not hide it from us, and we will not kill you.’

Si los príncipes llegan a saber que yo he hablado contigo, y vienen a verte y te dicen: “Dinos por favor de qué hablaste con el rey. Si no quieres que te matemos, no nos ocultes nada. Y dinos también qué te dijo el rey”,

26 T hen you must tell them, ‘I was asking the king not to make me return to the house of Jonathan to die there.’”

tú les responderás: “Yo le pedí al rey que no me hiciera volver a la casa de Jonatán, pues no quiero morir allí.”»

27 A ll the leaders did come to Jeremiah to ask him questions. So he said to them everything the king had told him to say. And they stopped speaking with him, because the words he and the king had spoken together had not been heard by anyone else.

En efecto, todos los príncipes fueron a ver a Jeremías y le preguntaron, y él les respondió tal y como el rey le había sugerido. Entonces ellos, al ver que ese asunto no había trascendido, dejaron a Jeremías en paz.

28 S o Jeremiah stayed in the open space of the prison until the day Jerusalem was taken.

Y Jeremías se quedó en el patio de la cárcel hasta el día en que Jerusalén fue conquistada. El día en que Jerusalén cayó, Jeremías estaba allí.
