1 T he Word of the Lord came to me saying,

La palabra del Señor vino a mí, y me dijo:

2 “ What do you mean by using this saying about the land of Israel: ‘The fathers eat the sour grapes, but the children get the sour taste’?

«Ustedes en la tierra de Israel acostumbran repetir aquel refrán que dice: “Los padres se comieron las uvas agrias, y a los hijos les dio la dentera.” ¿En verdad lo creen?

3 A s I live,” says the Lord God, “you will never use this saying in Israel again.

Vivo yo, que ese refrán nunca más volverá a repetirse en Israel. Palabra de Dios el Señor.

4 F or all souls belong to Me. Both the soul of the father and the soul of the son are Mine. The soul who sins will die.

»Todos ustedes son míos. Lo mismo el padre que el hijo. Sólo morirá quien peque. Nadie más.

5 B ut if a man is right and good and does what is right and good,

El hombre justo es aquel que actúa con apego al derecho y la justicia,

6 h e does not eat at the altars on the mountains or look up to the false gods of Israel. He does not sin with his neighbor’s wife or go near a woman during the time she is unclean.

que no come sobre los montes ni dirige la mirada a los ídolos del pueblo de Israel; que no viola a la mujer de su prójimo, ni tiene relaciones sexuales durante la menstruación de la mujer;

7 H e does not make it hard for anyone. He keeps his promise to pay back what he owes. He does not steal, but gives his bread to the hungry, and gives clothing to those who have none.

que no oprime a nadie, ni retiene la prenda del deudor, ni comete robo alguno; que comparte su pan con el hambriento, y cubre y viste al desnudo;

8 H e does not make others pay back more than they owe him. He keeps away from sin, and is an honest judge when men argue.

que no presta dinero por interés o por usura, y que se aleja de la maldad y es imparcial al juzgar entre hombre y hombre;

9 H e walks in My Laws and is careful to obey them. This man is right and good, and will live for sure,” says the Lord God.

que sigue mis ordenanzas, cumple mis decretos y actúa con rectitud. Ése es un hombre justo, y ese hombre vivirá. Palabra de Dios el Señor.

10 “ But he may have a son who acts in anger and kills another man, or does any of these other things

»Pero si ese hombre engendra un hijo ladrón, o asesino, o que incurre en alguna de estas cosas

11 t hat the father never did. He eats at the altars on the mountains, and sins with his neighbor’s wife.

pero no en otras, sino que come sobre los montes, o viola a la mujer de su prójimo,

12 H e makes it hard for the poor and those in need, and he steals. He does not keep his promise to pay back what he owes. He looks up to false gods, and does sinful acts.

u oprime al pobre y menesteroso, o comete robos, o no devuelve la prenda, o dirige la mirada hacia los ídolos e incurre en actos repugnantes,

13 A nd he makes people pay back more than they owe him. Will this man live? He will not live! He has done all these sinful acts, and for sure he will die. He will be guilty for his own death.

o presta dinero por interés y usura, ese hijo no merece vivir, y no vivirá. Por incurrir en todos estos actos repugnantes, tendrá que morir, y su muerte será culpa suya.

14 “ Now this man may have a son who has seen all the sins his father has done, but does not do the same.

»Pero si este malvado engendra un hijo que, al ver todos los pecados que su padre cometió, no los imita

15 H e does not eat at the altars on the mountains or look to the false gods of Israel. He does not sin with his neighbor’s wife,

sino, por el contrario, no come sobre los montes, ni dirige la mirada a los ídolos del pueblo de Israel, ni viola a la mujer de su prójimo,

16 o r make it hard for anyone. He does not keep what another man has given him in trust for a promise. He does not steal, but he gives his bread to the hungry and clothing to those who have none.

ni oprime a nadie, ni retiene la prenda, ni comete ningún robo, sino que comparte su pan con el hambriento, y cubre y viste al desnudo,

17 H e keeps away from sin. He does not make a person pay back more than he owes him. But he walks in My Laws and obeys them. This man will not die for his father’s sin. He will live for sure.

y se aparta del mal, y no cobra interés por sus préstamos, y cumple mis decretos y sigue mis ordenanzas, ese hijo no morirá por la maldad de su padre, sino que merece vivir.

18 A s for his father, because he used his power to rob his brother, and did what was wrong among his people, he will die for his sin.

Su padre, en cambio, morirá por causa de su maldad, por los agravios cometidos, por despojar con violencia a su prójimo y por hacer lo malo entre la gente de su propio pueblo.

19 “ Yet you say, ‘Why should the son not suffer for the father’s sin?’ Since the son has done what is right and good, and has kept and obeyed all My Laws, he will live for sure.

»Tal vez dirán ustedes: “¿Por qué no paga el hijo por el pecado de su padre?” Pues porque el hijo actuó en apego al derecho y la justicia, cumplió y practicó todos mis estatutos. Por eso merece vivir.

20 T he person who sins will die. The son will not be punished for the father’s sin. And the father will not be punished for the son’s sin. The right and good man will receive good, and the sinful man will suffer for his sin.

Sólo el que peque merece la muerte. Ningún hijo pagará por el pecado de su padre, ni tampoco ningún padre pagará por el pecado de su hijo. El hombre justo será juzgado por su justicia, y el malvado será juzgado por su maldad. Dios es justo

21 “ But if the sinful man turns from all the sins he has done and obeys all My Laws and does what is right and good, he will live for sure. He will not die.

»Pero si el malvado da la espalda a todos los pecados que cometió, y cumple todos mis estatutos y actúa con apego al derecho y la justicia, no morirá, sino que vivirá.

22 N one of the sins he has done will be remembered against him. Because of the right and good things he has done, he will live.

No le será tomada en cuenta ninguna de las transgresiones que haya cometido, sino que vivirá por actuar con justicia.

23 A m I pleased with the death of a sinful man?” says the Lord God. “No, instead I would like him to turn from his sinful ways and live.

¿Acaso me es placentero que el malvado muera? Más bien, quiero que se aparte de su maldad y que viva. Palabra de Dios el Señor.

24 “ But when a right and good man turns away from doing what is right and good, and sins, doing all the bad things that a sinful man does, will he live? None of the right and good things he has done will be remembered. Because he has not been faithful and has sinned, he will die.

»Pero si el justo deja de actuar con justicia y perpetra todos los hechos malvados y repugnantes que el impío suele cometer, ¿cómo podrá vivir? Ya no se le tomará en cuenta su justicia, sino su rebeldía y su maldad. Así que morirá por el pecado cometido.

25 Y et you say, ‘The Lord is not doing what is right.’ Listen, O people of Israel! Is My way not right? Is it not your ways that are not right?

»Escúchenme ahora, pueblo de Israel. Tal vez digan: “Los caminos del Señor no son rectos.” ¿Pero en verdad no son rectos? ¿No es, más bien, que los caminos de ustedes son torcidos?

26 W hen a right and good man turns away from doing what is right and good, and sins, and dies because of it, he dies because of the sin he has done.

Si el justo deja de ser justo, e incurre en actos malvados, merece la muerte, ¡y morirá por la maldad que cometió!

27 B ut when a sinful man turns away from his sin and does what is right and good, he will save his life.

Pero si el malvado se aparta de su maldad y se apega al derecho y a la justicia, habrá salvado su vida

28 B ecause he thought about it and turned away from all the sins he had done, he will live for sure. He will not die.

por fijarse en todas las transgresiones que había cometido y apartarse de ellas. Así que no morirá, sino que vivirá.

29 B ut the people of Israel say, ‘The Lord is not doing what is right.’ Are My ways not right, O people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are not right?

»Pero si aun así el pueblo de Israel sigue diciendo: “Los caminos del Señor no son rectos”, ¿en verdad no son rectos mis caminos, pueblo de Israel? ¡Lo cierto es que son los caminos de ustedes los que no son rectos!

30 “ So I will judge you, O people of Israel, each of you by what he has done,” says the Lord God. “Be sorry for all your sins and turn away from them, so sin will not destroy you.

Así que, pueblo de Israel, voy a juzgar a cada uno de ustedes según sus caminos. Por lo tanto, vuélvanse a mí y apártense de todas sus transgresiones, para que su maldad no sea la causa de su ruina. Palabra de Dios el Señor.

31 T urn away from all the sins you have done, and get a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O people of Israel?

»Pueblo de Israel, ¿por qué tienen que morir? Apártense de todas las transgresiones que han cometido, y forjen en ustedes un corazón y un espíritu nuevos,

32 F or I am not pleased with the death of anyone who dies,” says the Lord God. “So be sorry for your sins and turn away from them, and live.”

porque yo no quiero que ninguno de ustedes muera. Así que vuélvanse a mí, y vivirán. Palabra de Dios el Señor.
