1 S ome time later, there was a religious gathering of the Jews. Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Después de estas cosas había una fiesta de los judíos, y Jesús subió a Jerusalén.

2 I n Jerusalem there is a pool with five porches called Bethesda near the sheep gate.

En Jerusalén, cerca de la puerta de las ovejas, hay un estanque, llamado en hebreo Betesda, el cual tiene cinco pórticos.

3 I nside these porches lay many sick people. Some were blind. Some could not walk. Some could not move their bodies.

En ellos yacían muchos enfermos, ciegos, cojos y paralíticos [que esperaban el movimiento del agua,

4 ( An angel of the Lord came at certain times and made the water move. All of them were waiting for it to move. Whoever got in the water first after it was moving was healed of whatever sickness he had.)

porque un ángel descendía al estanque de vez en cuando, y agitaba el agua; y el primero que descendía al estanque después del movimiento del agua, quedaba sano de cualquier enfermedad que tuviera.]

5 A man was there who had been sick for thirty-eight years.

Allí había un hombre que hacía treinta y ocho años que estaba enfermo.

6 J esus saw him lying there and knew the man had been sick a long time. Jesus said to him, “Would you like to be healed?”

Cuando Jesús lo vio acostado, y se enteró de que llevaba ya mucho tiempo así, le dijo: «¿Quieres ser sano?»

7 T he sick man said, “Sir, I have no one to put me in the pool when the water is moving. While I am coming, another one gets in first.”

El enfermo le respondió: «Señor, no tengo a nadie que me meta en el estanque cuando el agua se agita; y en lo que llego, otro baja antes que yo.»

8 J esus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your bed and walk.”

Jesús le dijo: «Levántate, toma tu lecho, y vete.»

9 A t once the man was healed and picked up his bed and walked. This happened on the Day of Rest.

Y al instante aquel hombre fue sanado, y tomó su lecho y se fue. Pero aquel día era día de reposo,

10 T he Jews said to the man who had been healed, “This is the Day of Rest. It is against the Law for you to carry your bed.”

así que los judíos le dijeron a aquel que había sido sanado: «Hoy es día de reposo; no te está permitido llevar tu lecho.»

11 H e said to them, “The Man Who healed me said to me, ‘Pick up your bed and walk.’

Pero él les respondió: «El mismo que me sanó fue el que me dijo: “Toma tu lecho y anda”.»

12 T hen the Jews asked him, “What man said to you, ‘Pick up your bed and walk’ ?”

Entonces le preguntaron: «¿Y quién fue el que te dijo: “Toma tu lecho y anda”?»

13 T he man who had been healed did not know Who He was. Jesus had gone away while many people were there.

Pero el que había sido sanado no sabía quién lo había sanado, pues Jesús se había apartado de la gente que estaba en aquel lugar.

14 L ater Jesus found the man who had been healed in the house of God. He said to him, “Listen! You have been healed. Stop sinning or something worse will come to you.”

Después Jesús lo encontró en el templo, y le dijo: «Como puedes ver, has sido sanado; así que no peques más, para que no te sobrevenga algo peor.»

15 T he man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus Who had healed him. The Jews Want to Kill Jesus

Aquel hombre se fue, y les hizo saber a los judíos que el que lo había sanado era Jesús,

16 B ecause Jesus did these things on the Day of Rest, the Jews made it very hard for Him.

y por eso los judíos lo perseguían y procuraban matarlo, porque hacía esto en el día de reposo.

17 J esus said to them, “My Father is still working all the time so I am working also.”

Pero Jesús les respondió: «Hasta ahora mi Padre trabaja, y yo también trabajo.»

18 T he Jews tried all the more to kill Him, not only because He had worked on the Day of Rest, but because He had also called God His Own Father. This made Him the same as God. Jesus Tells How He Works

Por esto los judíos con más ganas procuraban matarlo, porque no sólo quebrantaba el día de reposo sino que, además, decía que Dios mismo era su Padre, con lo cual se hacía igual a Dios. La autoridad del Hijo

19 T hen Jesus said to them, “For sure, I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself. He does what He sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son does also.

Entonces Jesús les dijo: «De cierto, de cierto les digo: El Hijo no puede hacer nada por sí mismo, sino lo que ve que el Padre hace; porque todo lo que el Padre hace, eso mismo lo hace el Hijo.

20 T he Father loves the Son and shows the Son everything He does. The Father will show Him greater works than these. They will surprise you.

Y es que el Padre ama al Hijo, y le muestra todo lo que él hace; y mayores obras que éstas le mostrará, para el asombro de ustedes.

21 T he Father raises up the dead and makes them live. The Son also gives life to anyone He chooses.

Porque así como el Padre levanta a los muertos, y les da vida, así también el Hijo da vida a los que él quiere.

22 T he Father does not say who is guilty. He gives this to the Son to do.

Pues el Padre no juzga a nadie, sino que todo el juicio se lo ha dado al Hijo,

23 H e does this so that all people will honor the Son as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father Who sent Him.

para que todos honren al Hijo tal y como honran al Padre. El que no honra al Hijo, no honra al Padre que lo envió.

24 “ For sure, I tell you, anyone who hears My Word and puts his trust in Him Who sent Me has life that lasts forever. He will not be guilty. He has already passed from death into life. The Good People and the Sinful People Are Raised from the Dead

De cierto, de cierto les digo: El que oye mi palabra, y cree al que me envió, tiene vida eterna; y no será condenado, sino que ha pasado de muerte a vida.

25 “ For sure, I tell you, the time is coming. Yes, the time is here when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God. Those who hear will live.

De cierto, de cierto les digo: La hora viene, y ya llegó, cuando los muertos oirán la voz del Hijo de Dios; y los que la oigan vivirán.

26 T he Father has life in Himself. He has given power to the Son to have life in Himself.

Porque así como el Padre tiene vida en sí mismo, así también le ha dado al Hijo el tener vida en sí mismo;

27 G od has given Him the right and the power to say if people are guilty, because He is the Son of Man.

y también le dio autoridad de hacer juicio, por cuanto es el Hijo del Hombre.

28 D o not be surprised at this. The time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice.

No se asombren de esto: Vendrá el tiempo cuando todos los que están en los sepulcros oirán su voz;

29 T hey will come out. Those who have done good will be raised again and will have new life. Those who have been sinful will be raised again and will be told they are guilty and will be punished. Jesus Tells of John and of Himself

y los que hicieron lo bueno, saldrán a resurrección de vida; pero los que hicieron lo malo, a resurrección de condenación. Testigos de Cristo

30 “ I can do nothing by Myself. I say who is guilty only as My Father tells Me. That way, what I say is right, because I am not trying to do what I want to do. I am doing what the Father, Who sent Me, wants Me to do.

»Yo no puedo hacer nada por mí mismo. Yo juzgo según lo que oigo; y mi juicio es justo, porque no busco hacer mi voluntad, sino hacer la voluntad del que me envió.

31 I f I tell about Myself, My words are worth nothing.

Si yo doy testimonio acerca de mí mismo, mi testimonio no es verdadero;

32 T here is another One Who tells about Me. I know the words He says about Me are true.

Pero el que da testimonio acerca de mí es otro, y yo sé que el testimonio que de mí da es verdadero.

33 “ You sent to John the Baptist and he told you the truth.

Ustedes enviaron mensajeros a Juan, y él dio testimonio de la verdad.

34 I do not need words from men to say I am right. I say this that you might be saved from the punishment of sin.

Yo no recibo el testimonio de ningún hombre, sino que digo esto para que ustedes sean salvos.

35 J ohn the Baptist was a burning and shining light. You were willing for awhile to be glad in his light.

Juan era una antorcha que ardía y alumbraba, y por algún tiempo ustedes quisieron regocijarse en su luz.

36 I have something greater than John which tells of Me. I am doing works the Father has given Me to do and they are proving that the Father has sent Me.

Pero yo cuento con un testimonio mayor que el de Juan, y son las obras que el Padre me dio para que las llevara a cabo. Las obras mismas que yo hago son las que dan testimonio de mí, y de que el Padre me ha enviado.

37 T he Father has told of Me and has sent Me. You have never heard His voice. You have never seen Him.

También el Padre, que me envió, ha dado testimonio de mí. Ustedes nunca han oído su voz, ni han visto su aspecto,

38 Y ou do not have His Word living in your hearts because you do not put your trust in the One He sent.

ni tienen su palabra permanentemente en ustedes, porque a quien él envió ustedes no le creen.

39 “ You do read the Holy Writings. You think you have life that lasts forever just because you read them. They do tell of Me.

Ustedes escudriñan las Escrituras, porque les parece que en ellas tienen la vida eterna; ¡y son ellas las que dan testimonio de mí!

40 B ut you do not want to come to Me so you might have life.

Pero ustedes no quieren venir a mí para que tengan vida.

41 I do not take any honor from men.

Yo no recibo gloria de parte de los hombres.

42 I know you and you do not have the love of God in your hearts.

Pero yo los conozco a ustedes, y sé que el amor de Dios no habita en ustedes.

43 I have come in the name of My Father. You do not receive Me. If another person comes in his own name, you will receive him.

Yo he venido en nombre de mi Padre, y ustedes no me reciben; pero si otro viniera en su propio nombre, a ése sí lo recibirían.

44 H ow can you believe when you are always wanting honor from each other? And yet you do not look for the honor that comes from the only God.

¿Y cómo pueden ustedes creer, si se honran los unos de los otros, pero no buscan la honra que viene del Dios único?

45 “ Do not think that I will tell the Father you are guilty. The one who says you are guilty is Moses. You trust him.

No piensen que yo voy a acusarlos delante del Padre. Hay alguien que sí los acusa, y es Moisés, en quien ustedes tienen puesta su esperanza.

46 I f you had believed Moses, you would believe Me. For Moses wrote about Me.

Si ustedes le creyeran a Moisés, me creerían a mí, porque él escribió acerca de mí.

47 I f you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe My Words?”

Pero si no creen a sus escritos, ¿cómo van a creer a mis palabras?»
