1 If a man steals a bull or a sheep and kills it or sells it, he will pay five bulls for the bull and four sheep for the sheep.

»Si alguien roba un buey o una oveja, y los degüella o los vende, por el buey devolverá cinco bueyes, y por la oveja devolverá cuatro ovejas.

2 I f the robber is caught while breaking in, and is hit so that he dies, the owner of the house is not guilty for his blood.

»Si un ladrón es pillado forzando una casa, y es herido y muere, no se culpará de su muerte al que lo haya herido.

3 B ut if the sun has risen on him, there will be guilt for his blood. The robber must pay for the loss. If he has nothing, then he must be sold for stealing.

»Si el robo ocurre durante el día, el que mate al ladrón será culpable de homicidio. »El ladrón deberá devolver todo lo que haya robado. Si no tiene con qué pagar, será vendido por lo que haya robado.

4 I f the stolen bull or donkey or sheep is found alive with him, he must pay twice what it is worth.

Si es hallado con el animal robado en la mano y aún vivo, sea un buey, un asno o una oveja, deberá pagar el doble de lo robado.

5 I f a man lets his cattle eat from a field or grape-field and lets his cattle loose to eat in another man’s field, he will pay for the loss from the best of his own field or grape-field.

»Si alguien lleva a su ganado a pacer en un campo o un viñedo ajeno, deberá indemnizar al dueño con lo mejor de su propio campo y de su propio viñedo.

6 When a fire starts and spreads to thorn bushes so as to burn up picked grain or standing grain or the field itself, he who started the fire will pay for the loss.

»Si alguien prende fuego para quemar espinos, y quema un campo con mieses amontonadas o en pie, deberá pagar por lo que se haya quemado.

7 If a man gives his neighbor money or things to keep for him, and it is stolen from the man’s house, if the robber is caught he will pay twice as much as the loss.

»Si alguien pide a su prójimo que le guarde plata o alhajas, y esto es robado de su casa, si el ladrón es hallado, se le hará pagar el doble.

8 I f the robber is not caught, then the owner of the house will be brought to the judges. They will see if he stole what belongs to his neighbor.

Si el ladrón no es hallado, entonces el dueño de la casa será llevado ante los jueces para ver si ha metido mano en los bienes de su prójimo.

9 F or every wrong act, if it is for bull, donkey, sheep, clothing, or any lost thing about which someone says, ‘This is mine,’ the stories of both men will come in front of the judges. Whoever the judges say is guilty will pay his neighbor twice as much as the loss.

»En todo caso de posesión dudosa, trátese de un buey, un asno, una oveja, un vestido, o cualquier otra cosa perdida, si alguien dice ser el dueño, el caso será llevado ante los jueces, y la parte que los jueces declaren culpable deberá pagar el doble a su prójimo.

10 If a man gives his neighbor a donkey, bull, sheep or any animal to keep for him, and it dies or is hurt or is driven away while no one is looking,

»Si alguien deja un asno, un buey, una oveja, o cualquier otro animal, al cuidado de un amigo, y el animal muere, o es lastimado, o robado sin que nadie lo atestigüe,

11 t he two men will make a promise before the Lord that he has not taken what belongs to his neighbor. The owner will take his word for it. And he will not make him pay for the loss.

el amigo hará un juramento ante el Señor de que no metió mano en los bienes del dueño. Éste deberá aceptar el juramento como verdadero, y el amigo no pagará nada.

12 B ut if it is stolen from him, he will pay the owner for the loss.

»Si el animal le es robado, el amigo deberá indemnizar al dueño.

13 I f the animal is torn to pieces, let him bring it to prove what happened. He will not pay for what has been torn to pieces.

»Si el animal es atacado por una fiera, presentará el animal muerto como testimonio, y no pagará ninguna indemnización.

14 If a man asks to use anything that belongs to his neighbor, and it gets hurt or dies while its owner is not with it, the man who was using it will pay for the loss.

»Si alguien pide a un amigo que le preste una bestia, y ésta es lastimada, o muere, deberá pagar por ella, si su amigo estaba ausente.

15 I f its owner is with it, the man who was using it will not pay for the loss. If he paid money to use it, then the loss is paid for. Laws about Right Living

»Si el dueño estaba presente, no pagará nada. »Si la bestia había sido alquilada, el dueño recibirá sólo el alquiler como pago. Leyes humanitarias

16 If a man tempts a woman who has never had a man and is not promised in marriage, and lies with her, he must pay a wedding gift for her to be his wife.

»Si alguien seduce a una doncella aún soltera, y se acuesta con ella, deberá pagar su dote y tomarla por mujer.

17 I f her father will not give her to him, he will pay the wedding gift that is to be paid for women who have never had a man.

»Si el padre se niega a entregarla, el seductor deberá de todos modos pagar en plata la dote señalada para las vírgenes.

18 Do not allow a woman to live who does witchcraft.

»No dejarás con vida a ninguna hechicera.

19 W hoever does sex sins with an animal will be put to death.

»Cualquiera que tenga contacto sexual con un animal, será condenado a muerte.

20 He who gives a gift in worship to any god other than the Lord alone will be destroyed.

»Los sacrificios son sólo del Señor. El que ofrezca sacrificios a otros dioses, será condenado a muerte.

21 D o not do wrong to a stranger or make it hard for him. For you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

»No engañarás ni maltratarás al extranjero, porque también ustedes fueron extranjeros en Egipto.

22 D o not bring trouble to any woman whose husband has died or any child whose parents have died.

»No afligirás a las viudas ni a los huérfanos.

23 I f you bring them trouble, and they cry out to Me, for sure I will hear their cry.

Si llegas a afligirlos, y ellos me piden ayuda, yo atenderé su clamor.

24 M y anger will burn and I will kill you with the sword. Then your wives will lose their husbands. And your children will lose their fathers.

Entonces se encenderá mi furor, y yo los mataré a espada, y las viudas y los huérfanos serán las mujeres y los hijos de ustedes.

25 If you let any of the poor among My people use your money, do not act toward him like one who is owed money. And do not make him pay you for the use of it.

»Si prestas dinero a alguno de los pobres de mi pueblo, que viva contigo, no te portarás con él como un prestamista ni le cobrarás intereses.

26 I f you ever take your neighbor’s coat to keep while he owes you money, return it to him before the sun goes down.

»Si recibes como prenda el vestido de tu prójimo, deberás devolvérselo al ponerse el sol.

27 F or that is his only covering. It is his clothing for his body. What else will he sleep in? When he cries out to Me, I will hear him. For I have loving-pity.

Porque, ¿cómo podrá dormir, si eso es lo único que tiene para cubrirse? Y si él me pide ayuda, yo lo atenderé, porque soy misericordioso.

28 Do not curse God, or a ruler of your people.

»No ofenderás a los jueces, ni maldecirás al príncipe de tu pueblo.

29 D o not wait before giving Me a gift from your gathered grain and the fruit of your fields. You will give to Me the first-born of your sons.

»No retendrás las primicias de tu cosecha ni de tu lagar. »Me darás tu hijo primogénito.

30 Y ou will do the same with your cattle and your sheep. The first-born will be with its mother seven days. On the eighth day you will give it to Me.

»Me darás también la primera cría de tu buey y de tu oveja. Podrán quedarse con su madre siete días, pero al octavo día deberás entregármelas.

31 Y ou will be holy men to Me. So you will not eat any flesh torn to pieces in the field. You will throw it to the dogs.

»Ustedes serán hombres consagrados a mí. »No comerán la carne de animales destrozados por las fieras salvajes. Esa carne se la echarán a los perros.
