1 I t was decided that we should go to the country of Italy by ship. Then they put Paul and some other men in chains. Julius, a captain of Caesar’s army, was to watch them.

Cuando se decidió que debíamos ir por barco a Italia, Pablo y otros prisioneros fueron entregados a un centurión llamado Julio, de la compañía Augusta.

2 W e went on a ship that was from the city of Adramyttian. It was going to stop at the towns along the sea-shore of Asia. Aristarchus was with us. He was a man from the city of Thessalonica in the country of Macedonia.

Nos embarcaron en una nave de Adramitio que tocaría los puertos de la provincia de Asia. Al zarpar, iba con nosotros Aristarco, un macedonio de Tesalónica.

3 T he next day we stopped in the city of Sidon. Julius was kind to Paul. He let him visit friends who cared for him.

Un día después llegamos a Sidón. Julio trataba a Pablo con mucha deferencia, y le permitía visitar a sus amigos, para que lo atendieran.

4 A fter leaving Sidon we were blown by the wind along the south side of the island of Cyprus. The wind was against us.

De allí desplegamos velas, y navegamos a sotavento de Chipre, porque teníamos el viento en contra.

5 W e crossed the sea along the countries of Cilicia and Pamphylia and got to the city of Myra in the country of Lycia.

Después de cruzar el mar frente a Cilicia y Panfilia, arribamos a Mira, una ciudad de Licia.

6 T he captain found a ship from the city of Alexandria that was going to the country of Italy. He put us on it.

Allí el centurión dio con una nave alejandrina que zarpaba para Italia, y nos embarcó en ella.

7 F or many days the ship did not move fast. It was hard to get to the city of Cnidus. The wind would not let us go on. So we went along the south shore of the island of Crete and passed the end of the island called Salome.

Nuestra navegación fue muy lenta durante varios días, y a duras penas llegamos frente a Gnido, porque el fuerte viento nos lo impedía. Navegamos entonces a sotavento de Creta, frente a Salmón.

8 T he wind was against us, and we did not sail very fast. Then we came to a place called Fair Havens. It was near the city of Lasea.

Logramos costear con dificultad, y llegamos a un lugar llamado Buenos Puertos, cerca de la ciudad de Lasea.

9 M uch time had been lost. To keep going that late in the year would mean danger. Paul spoke with strong words,

Pasaron muchos días, incluso el día del Perdón, así que era muy arriesgado continuar con la navegación. Entonces Pablo les hizo una observación.

10 “ Sirs, it looks to me as if this ship and its freight will be lost. We are in danger of being lost also.”

Les dijo: «Amigos, si seguimos navegando, creo que sufriremos perjuicios y pérdidas, no sólo del cargamento y de la nave sino también de nosotros.»

11 T he captain of the soldiers listened to what the captain of the ship said and not to what Paul said.

Pero el centurión no le hizo caso, pues le creía más al piloto y al capitán de la nave que a Pablo.

12 I t was not a good place to spend the winter. Most of those on the ship wanted to go on and try to get to Phoenix. Crete was a good place to tie up the ship. They wanted to spend the winter there.

Como el puerto era incómodo para invernar, casi todos acordaron zarpar de allí. Creían poder arribar a Fenice, un puerto de Creta que mira al noroeste y al suroeste, e invernar allí. La tempestad en el mar

13 W hen a south wind started to blow, they thought their plan was right. They pulled up the anchor and went close to the shore of Crete.

Como empezó a soplar una brisa del sur, les pareció que el viento era adecuado; entonces levaron anclas y se fueron siguiendo la costa de Creta.

14 L ater a bad wind storm came down from the land. It was called a northeaster.

Pero al poco tiempo un viento huracanado, conocido como Euroclidón, dio contra la nave

15 T he ship was stopped by the wind. After awhile we gave up and let it go with the wind.

y la arrastró. Como no fue posible poner proa al viento, simplemente nos dejamos llevar por el viento.

16 W e went behind a small island called Claudia. It was hard work but we were able to make the ship’s boat safe.

Luego de deslizarnos a sotavento de la isla llamada Cauda, con muchas dificultades pudimos recoger la lancha salvavidas,

17 T hey pulled it up and tied ropes around it and the ship. They were afraid of going on the Syrtis sands. So they took the sail down and let the ship go with the wind.

la cual fue subida a bordo y atada a la nave. Por temor a quedar varados en la arena, se arriaron las velas y la nave quedó a la deriva.

18 T he storm was so bad the high waves were beating against the ship. The next day the men threw some of the freight over into the sea.

Como éramos azotados por una furiosa tempestad, al siguiente día se comenzó a aligerar la nave de su carga,

19 O n the third day, with their own hands, they threw part of the sails and ropes into the sea.

y al tercer día se arrojaron los aparejos de la nave.

20 W e did not see the sun or stars for many days. A very bad storm kept beating against us. We lost all hope of being saved. Paul Shows His Faith

Durante muchos días no pudieron verse el sol ni las estrellas, y la fuerte tempestad nos seguía azotando, así que ya habíamos perdido toda esperanza de salvarnos.

21 N o one had eaten for a long time. Then Paul stood up and said to them, “Men, you should have listened to me and not left Crete. You would not have had this trouble and loss.

Como hacía mucho que no comíamos, Pablo se puso de pie y dijo: «Amigos, ustedes debieron haberme hecho caso, y no haber zarpado de Creta. Así se habría evitado este perjuicio y esta pérdida.

22 B ut now I want you to take hope. No one will lose his life. Only the ship will be lost.

Pero yo les pido que no pierdan el ánimo, pues ninguno de ustedes perderá la vida. Solamente se perderá la nave.

23 I belong to God and I work for Him. Last night an angel of God stood by me

Lo sé porque esta noche ha estado conmigo el ángel del Dios, a quien sirvo y pertenezco,

24 a nd said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand in front of Caesar. God has given you the lives of all the men on this ship.’

y me ha dicho: “Pablo, no tengas miedo. Es necesario que comparezcas ante el emperador. Dios te ha concedido que todos los que navegan contigo salgan ilesos.”

25 S o take hope, men. I believe my God will do what He has told me.

Así que, ¡anímense, amigos míos!, que Dios hará todo tal y como me lo ha dicho.

26 B ut the ship will be lost on some island.”

Sin embargo, necesitamos llegar a alguna isla.»

27 I t was now the fourteenth night. We were going with the wind on the Adriatic Sea. At midnight the sailors thought land was near.

Catorce noches después de navegar a la deriva por el mar Adriático, a eso de la medianoche los marineros intuyeron que estaban cerca de tierra,

28 T hey let down the lead weight and found the water was not very deep. After they had gone a little farther, they found there was not as much water.

así que echaron la sonda y ésta marcaba una profundidad de veinte brazas; un poco más adelante volvieron a echarla, y ya marcaba quince brazas.

29 T hey were afraid we might be thrown against the rocks on the shore. So they put out four anchors from the back of the ship. Then they waited for morning to come.

Ante el temor de dar con algunos escollos, se echaron cuatro anclas por la popa, esperando con ansias que amaneciera.

30 T he sailors were thinking of leaving the ship. They let down a boat as if they were going to put out anchors from the front of the ship.

Algunos marineros trataron de huir de la nave y, aparentando que querían soltar las anclas de proa, echaron al mar la lancha salvavidas;

31 B ut Paul said to the captain and the soldiers, “These men must stay on the ship or you cannot be safe!”

Pero Pablo les dijo al centurión y a los soldados: «Si éstos no se quedan en la nave, ustedes no se podrán salvar.»

32 T hen the soldiers cut the ropes and let the boat fall into the sea.

Entonces los soldados cortaron las amarras de la lancha y dejaron que ésta se perdiera.

33 J ust before the light of day came, Paul told all of them to eat. He said, “Today is the fourteenth day you have not eaten.

Comenzaba a amanecer cuando Pablo los animó a comer. Les dijo: «Ya van catorce días que ustedes están en ayunas y en compás de espera. ¡No han comido nada!

34 Y ou must eat. It will give you strength. Not one of you will lose a hair from your head.”

Yo les ruego que coman algo para mantenerse sanos. Tengan la seguridad de que no van a perder ni un cabello de su cabeza.»

35 A fter he said this, he took some bread. He gave thanks to God in front of them all. He broke it in pieces and started to eat.

Dicho esto, Pablo tomó el pan y dio gracias a Dios en presencia de todos; luego lo partió y comenzó a comer.

36 T hey all were comforted. Each one ate some food.

Entonces todos se animaron y también comieron.

37 A ll together there were 276 of us on the ship.

Los que estábamos en la nave éramos un total de doscientas setenta y seis personas.

38 A fter they had eaten, they threw the wheat into the sea so the ship would not be as heavy.

Ya satisfechos, se aligeró más la nave y se arrojó el trigo al mar. El naufragio

39 I n the morning they could not see what land they were near. Later they could see a river. Near its mouth there was a shore of sand. They planned to run the ship onto the sand if they could.

Al llegar el día, no reconocieron el lugar, pero vieron una ensenada que tenía playa, y acordaron hacer el intento de encallar allí.

40 T he anchors were cut loose and left in the sea. Then they took the ropes off that were holding the rudder. When they put up the sail, the wind took the ship toward shore.

Soltaron las anclas y las dejaron en el mar; soltaron también las amarras del timón, izaron al viento la vela de proa, y se enfilaron hacia la playa.

41 B ut the ship hit a place where the water was low. It was made from where two seas meet. The front of the ship did not move but the back part broke in pieces by the high waves.

Como encontraron un lugar de dos corrientes, hicieron encallar la nave; allí la proa quedó inmóvil y enclavada en la arena, pero la violencia del mar hizo pedazos la popa.

42 T he soldiers planned to kill the men in chains. They were afraid they would swim to shore and get away,

Entonces los soldados acordaron matar a los presos, para que ninguno tratara de fugarse nadando,

43 b ut the captain wanted to save Paul. He kept them from their plan. Calling out to those who could swim, he told them to jump into the sea and swim to shore.

pero el centurión quería salvar a Pablo, así que les impidió su intento y ordenó que los que supieran nadar fueran los primeros en echarse al mar para llegar a tierra,

44 T he others should use wood or anything from the ship. In this way, they all got to shore without getting hurt.

y que los demás usaran tablas, o algunos restos de la nave. Fue así como todos pudimos llegar a tierra y salvarnos.
