1 T he Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you be filled with sorrow because of Saul, since I have turned away from him being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse of Bethlehem. For I have chosen a king for Myself among his sons.”

Un día, el Señor le dijo a Samuel: «¿Hasta cuándo vas a estar triste por causa de Saúl? ¿No recuerdas que yo lo deseché como rey de Israel? Mejor llena de aceite tu cuerno, y ve a Belén; allí, vas a visitar a Yesé, porque uno de sus hijos será el próximo rey de Israel.»

2 B ut Samuel said, “How can I go? Saul will kill me when he hears about it.” The Lord said, “Take a young cow with you, and say, ‘I have come to give a gift to the Lord.’

Y Samuel le preguntó: «¿Con qué pretexto voy a ir? Si Saúl llega a saber a qué voy, de seguro me matará.» El Señor le respondió: «Llévate una becerra de la vacada, y di que vas a ofrecerme un sacrificio.

3 A sk Jesse to come when you give the gift, and I will show you what you should do. You will choose for Me the one I name to you.”

Llama luego a Yesé para que te acompañe en el sacrificio, y allí te diré lo que tienes que hacer, y consagrarás como rey a quien yo te diga.»

4 S o Samuel did what the Lord said, and came to Bethlehem. The leaders of the city came shaking with fear to meet him. They said, “Do you come in peace?”

Y Samuel hizo lo que el Señor le dijo. En cuanto llegó a Belén, los ancianos de la ciudad salieron temerosos a recibirlo, y le preguntaron: «¿Vienes con intenciones pacíficas?»

5 S amuel said, “I have come in peace to give a gift to the Lord. Make yourselves holy and come with me as I give the gift.” He set apart Jesse and his sons also, and asked them to come to the gift-giving.

Y Samuel les respondió: «Sí, vengo a ofrecer un sacrificio al Señor. Purifíquense y acompáñenme.» Y Samuel purificó también a Yesé y a sus hijos, y los invitó al sacrificio.

6 W hen they had come, Samuel looked at Eliab and thought, “For sure he is the Lord’s chosen one who is standing before Him.”

Y cuando todos estuvieron reunidos, Samuel vio a Eliab, y pensó: «Seguramente, éste es el que Dios ha escogido.»

7 B ut the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at the way he looks on the outside or how tall he is, because I have not chosen him. For the Lord does not look at the things man looks at. A man looks at the outside of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Pero el Señor le dijo: «No te dejes llevar por su apariencia ni por su estatura, porque éste no es mi elegido. Yo soy el Señor, y veo más allá de lo que el hombre ve. El hombre mira lo que está delante de sus ojos, pero yo miro el corazón.»

8 T hen Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one.”

Luego Yesé llamó a Abinadab, y lo puso enfrente de Samuel, pero éste dijo: «Tampoco éste es el elegido del Señor.»

9 N ext Jesse made Shammah pass by. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one.”

Yesé presentó también a Samá, y Samuel repitió que tampoco éste era el elegido del Señor.

10 J esse made seven of his sons pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.”

Yesé le presentó a siete de sus hijos, pero Samuel le dijo que el Señor no había elegido a ninguno de ellos.

11 T hen Samuel said to Jesse, “Are these all the children?” And Jesse said, “There is yet the youngest one. See, he is taking care of the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send for him. We will not sit down until he comes here.”

Y le preguntó: «¿Éstos son todos tus hijos?» Yesé respondió: «Falta uno, que es el menor, pero él anda cuidando las ovejas.» Y Samuel le dijo: «Manda a traerlo, porque sin él no podemos sentarnos a la mesa.»

12 S o he sent for him and brought him in. His youngest son had good color in his skin, beautiful eyes and was good-looking. The Lord said, “Rise up and choose him. For this is the one.”

Yesé mandó a traerlo, y cuando éste llegó lo invitó a pasar. Era un jovencito rubio, de hermosos ojos y de agradable apariencia. Entonces el Señor le dijo a Samuel: «Éste es mi elegido. Levántate y conságralo.»

13 T hen Samuel took the horn of oil and poured the oil on him in front of his brothers. The Spirit of the Lord came upon David with strength from that day on. And Samuel got up and went to Ramah. Saul’s Spirit Is Troubled

Samuel tomó entonces el cuerno en donde llevaba el aceite, y lo ungió como rey en presencia de sus hermanos. Y a partir de ese día el espíritu del Señor estuvo sobre David. Después de eso, Samuel regresó a Ramá. David toca para Saúl

14 N ow the Spirit of the Lord left Saul. And a bad spirit sent from the Lord brought trouble upon him.

Como el espíritu del Señor ya se había apartado de Saúl, un espíritu maligno de parte del Señor lo atormentaba constantemente.

15 S aul’s servants said to him, “See, a bad spirit from God is bringing you trouble.

Entonces sus sirvientes le dijeron: «Sabemos que te atormenta un espíritu maligno que viene de Dios.

16 L et our lord now tell your servants who are in front of you to look for a man who is a good player of the harp. When the bad spirit sent from God is upon you, he will play the harp, and you will be well.”

Te sugerimos que envíes a alguno de nosotros para que busque quién sepa tañer el arpa. Así, cuando tu espíritu sea atormentado, éste tocará el arpa y la música calmará tu espíritu.»

17 S o Saul said to his servants, “Find me a man who can play well, and bring him to me.”

Y Saúl les respondió: «Sí, vayan y busquen alguien que toque bien el arpa, y tráiganlo acá.»

18 O ne of the young men said, “I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who plays music well. He is a man with strength of heart, a man of war, wise in his speaking, and good-looking. And the Lord is with him.”

Uno de sus sirvientes le dijo: «Yo conozco a uno de los hijos de Yesé, el de Belén. Toca muy bien el arpa; es un joven valiente, fuerte y aguerrido; además, es prudente cuando habla, y muy apuesto, y el Señor está con él.»

19 S o Saul sent men with news to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David who is with the sheep.”

Entonces Saúl envió unos mensajeros a Yesé, para que le dijeran: «Envíame a tu hijo David, el que cuida las ovejas.»

20 J esse took a donkey loaded with bread, a bottle of wine, and a young goat, and sent them to Saul with David his son.

Yesé tomó un asno, lo cargó con pan y una vasija de vino, y un cabrito; y por medio de su hijo David se lo envió a Saúl.

21 D avid came to Saul and served him. Saul loved him very much, and he became the man who carried Saul’s battle-clothes.

Cuando David llegó, se presentó ante el rey; y en cuanto Saúl lo vio, quedó tan complacido que lo hizo su escudero.

22 S aul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Let David serve me, for he has found favor in my eyes.”

Luego, Saúl mandó que le dijeran a Yesé: «Te ruego que le permitas a tu hijo quedarse conmigo, pues se ha ganado mi estimación.»

23 W hen the bad spirit sent from God came upon Saul, David would take the harp and play it with his hand. And Saul would receive new strength and be well. The bad spirit would leave him.

Y cuando el espíritu maligno venía de parte de Dios y atormentaba a Saúl, David tomaba el arpa y la tocaba. Con esto Saúl se calmaba y se sentía mejor, y el espíritu maligno se apartaba de Saúl.
