1 T he Word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying,

La palabra del Señor vino a Jonás por segunda vez, y le dijo:

2 “ Get up and go to the large city of Nineveh, and tell the people there the news which I am going to tell you.”

«Levántate y ve a la gran ciudad de Nínive, y proclama allí el mensaje que yo te daré.»

3 S o Jonah got up and went to Nineveh, as the Lord had told him. Now Nineveh was a very large city. It took three days to walk through it.

Jonás se levantó y, conforme a la palabra del Señor, fue a Nínive. Y era Nínive una ciudad grande en extremo, de tres días de camino.

4 J onah started into the city, for a day’s walk, and he cried out, “In forty days Nineveh will be destroyed!”

Jonás comenzó a recorrer la ciudad, camino de un día, y en su predicación decía: «¡Dentro de cuarenta días Nínive será destruida!»

5 T hen the people of Nineveh believed in God. They called for a time when no food was to be eaten. And all the people, from the greatest to the least, put on clothes made from hair.

Todos los habitantes de Nínive creyeron a Dios y decretaron ayuno, y desde el mayor hasta el menor se vistieron de cilicio.

6 W hen the news came to the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne and laid aside his beautiful clothing. Then he covered himself with cloth made from hair, and sat in ashes.

Cuando la noticia llegó hasta el rey de Nínive, éste se levantó de su trono, se despojó de sus vestidos, se cubrió de cilicio y se sentó sobre ceniza;

7 A nd he sent word through all of Nineveh, saying, “By the law of the king and his leaders, do not let man or animal, cattle or flock, taste anything. Do not let them eat or drink water.

luego ordenó que, por mandato suyo y de sus altos personajes, se proclamara en Nínive este decreto: «Ningún hombre ni animal, ni tampoco ningún buey ni oveja, debe probar bocado ni alimento alguno, ni beber agua.

8 B oth man and animal must be covered with cloth made from hair. Everyone must pray to God with all his heart, so each person may turn from his sinful way and from the bad things he has done.

Al contrario, hombres y animales por igual deberán cubrirse de cilicio y clamar a Dios con todas sus fuerzas. Apártese cada uno de su mal camino y de la violencia que hay en sus manos.

9 W ho knows? God may change His mind and stop being angry so that we will not die.”

¿Quién sabe? Tal vez Dios se arrepienta y el ardor de su ira se calme, ¡y entonces no pereceremos!»

10 W hen God saw what they did, and that they turned from their sinful way, He changed His mind about the trouble He said He would bring upon them, and He did not destroy Nineveh.

Y al ver Dios lo que hicieron, y que se habían apartado de su mal camino, también él se arrepintió de hacerles el daño que les había anunciado, y desistió de hacerlo.
