1 T he Word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying,

І було Господнє слово до Йони вдруге таке:

2 “ Get up and go to the large city of Nineveh, and tell the people there the news which I am going to tell you.”

Устань, іди до Ніневії, великого міста, і проповідуй на нього те слово, що Я говорив був тобі!

3 S o Jonah got up and went to Nineveh, as the Lord had told him. Now Nineveh was a very large city. It took three days to walk through it.

І Йона встав, і пішов до Ніневії за Господнім словом. А Ніневія була місто велике-превелике, на три дні ходи.

4 J onah started into the city, for a day’s walk, and he cried out, “In forty days Nineveh will be destroyed!”

І зачав Йона ходити по місті, на один день ходи, і проповідував і казав: Ще сорок день, і Ніневія буде зруйнована!

5 T hen the people of Nineveh believed in God. They called for a time when no food was to be eaten. And all the people, from the greatest to the least, put on clothes made from hair.

І ніневітяни ввірували в Бога, і оголосили піст, і позодягали верети, від найбільшого з них аж до найменшого.

6 W hen the news came to the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne and laid aside his beautiful clothing. Then he covered himself with cloth made from hair, and sat in ashes.

І дійшло це слово до царя Ніневії, і він устав зо свого трону, і скинув плаща свого з себе, і покрився веретою, та й сів на попелі.

7 A nd he sent word through all of Nineveh, saying, “By the law of the king and his leaders, do not let man or animal, cattle or flock, taste anything. Do not let them eat or drink water.

І він звелів кликнути й сказати в Ніневії з наказу царя та його вельмож, говорячи: Нехай не покуштують нічого ані людина, ані худоба, худоба велика чи худоба дрібна, нехай вони не пасуться, і нехай не п'ють води!

8 B oth man and animal must be covered with cloth made from hair. Everyone must pray to God with all his heart, so each person may turn from his sinful way and from the bad things he has done.

І нехай покриваються веретами та людина й та худоба, і нехай сильно кличуть до Бога, і нехай кожен зверне з своєї дороги та від насильства, що в їхніх руках.

9 W ho knows? God may change His mind and stop being angry so that we will not die.”

Хто знає, може Бог обернеться й пожалує, і відвернеться з жару гніву Свого, і ми не погинемо!

10 W hen God saw what they did, and that they turned from their sinful way, He changed His mind about the trouble He said He would bring upon them, and He did not destroy Nineveh.

І побачив Бог їхні вчинки, що звернули зо своєї злої дороги, і пожалував Бог щодо того лиха, про яке говорив, що їм учинить, і не вчинив.
