1 T hen Samuel took a bottle of oil and poured it on Saul’s head. He kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord chosen you to be a ruler over His land?

І взяв Самуїл посудинку оливи, та й вилляв на його голову, і поцілував його та й сказав: Чи це не помазав тебе Господь над спадком Своїм на володаря? (І будеш ти царювати над народом Господнім, і ти визволиш його від руки ворогів його навколо. І ось тобі ознака, що Господь помазав тебе над спадком Своїм на володаря.)

2 W hen you leave me today, you will meet two men by Rachel’s grave in the land of Benjamin at Zelzah. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys you went to look for have been found. Now your father has stopped worrying about the donkeys and is worried about you, saying, “What should I do about my son?”’

Як підеш ти сьогодні від мене, то при Рахилинім гробі, у Веніяминовій країні в Целцаху, знайдеш двох людей, і вони скажуть тобі: Знайдені ті ослиці, яких ти шукати ходив. А оце батько твій занехаяв справи тих ослиць, та й зажурився за вас, говорячи: Що я зроблю для свого сина?

3 T hen you will go farther and come to the oak tree of Tabor. There three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you. One will be carrying three young goats. Another will be carrying three loaves of bread. And another will be carrying a bottle of wine.

І перейдеш ти звідти й далі, і підеш аж до діброви Фаворської, а там знайдуть тебе три чоловіки, що йдуть до Бога до Бет-Елу, один несе трьох ягнят, а один несе три буханці хліба, а один несе бурдюка вина.

4 T hey will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you will take from their hand.

І запитають вони тебе про мир, та дадуть тобі два хліби, і ти візьмеш із їхньої руки.

5 T hen you will come to the hill of God where there are Philistine soldiers. When you come there to the city, you will meet a group of men who speak for God coming down from the high place. They will have harps, an object to beat sounds of joy, and a horn. And they will be speaking God’s Word.

Потому вийдеш ти на Божий горбок, де намісники филистимські. І станеться, як ти ввійдеш там до міста, то стрінеш громаду пророків, що сходять з пагірка, а перед ними арфа, та бубон, та сопілка, та цитра, і вони пророкують.

6 T hen the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you with power. You will speak God’s Word with them and be changed into another man.

І злине на тебе Дух Господній, і ти будеш з ними пророкувати, і станеш іншою людиною.

7 W hen you see these special things, do whatever you find that should be done. For God is with you.

І станеться, коли збудуться тобі ці ознаки, роби собі, що знайде рука твоя, бо Бог з тобою.

8 Y ou will go down before me to Gilgal. Then see, I will come down to you to give burnt gifts and peace gifts. Wait seven days until I come to you and show you what you should do.”

І зійдеш ти передо мною до Ґілґалу, а я зійду до тебе, щоб принести цілопалення, щоб приносити мирні жертви. Сім день будеш чекати, аж поки прийду я до тебе, і завідомлю тебе, що будеш робити.

9 W hen Saul turned his back to leave Samuel, God changed his heart. And all these special things happened on that day.

І сталося, як повернувся він, щоб іти від Самуїла, то Бог змінив йому серце на інше, а всі ті ознаки прийшли того дня.

10 W hen they came to the hill, a group of men who speak for God met him. The Spirit of God came upon him with power, so that he spoke God’s Word with them.

І прийшли вони туди до Ґів'ї, аж ось громада пророків назустріч йому. І злинув на нього Дух Божий, і він пророкував серед них.

11 P eople who had known him before saw him doing this and asked one another, “What has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul one of the men who speak God’s Word?”

І сталося, кожен, хто знав його віддавна, а тепер побачили, ось він пророкує разом із пророками, то казали один до одного: Що то сталося Кішовому синові? Чи й Саул між пророками?

12 O ne of the men there answered, “Now, who is their father?” So it became a saying: “Is Saul one of the men who speak God’s Word?”

І відповів чоловік звідти й сказав: А хто їній батько? Тому то стало за приказку: Чи й Саул між пророками?

13 W hen Saul had finished speaking the Word of God, he went to the altar at the high place.

І перестав він пророкувати, і прийшов на пагірок.

14 T he brother of Saul’s father said to him and his servant, “Where have you been?” And Saul said, “To look for the donkeys. When we saw that they could not be found, we went to Samuel.”

І сказав Саулів дядько до нього та до слуги його: Куди ви ходили? А той відказав: Шукати ослиць. І побачили ми, що нема, і прийшли до Самуїла.

15 T he brother of Saul’s father said, “Tell me, what did Samuel say to you?”

А дядько Саулів сказав: Скажи ж мені, що сказав вам Самуїл?

16 S aul said to his father’s brother, “He told us that the donkeys had been found.” But he did not tell him what Samuel had told him about being king.

І сказав Саул до дядька свого: Справді розповів нам, що знайдені ті ослиці. А про справу царства, що говорив Самуїл, не розповів йому.

17 T hen Samuel called the people together to the Lord at Mizpah.

І скликав Самуїл народ до Господа, до Міцпи,

18 H e said to the people of Israel, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel out of Egypt. I saved you from the power of the Egyptians, and from the power of all the nations that made it hard for you.’

та й сказав до Ізраїлевих синів: Так сказав Господь, Бог Ізраїлів: Я вивів Ізраїля з Єгипту, і спас вас із руки Єгипту та з руки всіх царств, що гнобили вас.

19 B ut today you have turned away from your God, Who saves you from all your troubles. You have said, ‘No! Have a king rule over us!’ So now come before the Lord, by your family groups and by your thousands.”

А ви сьогодні погордували своїм Богом, що Він спасає вас з усіх нещасть ваших та утисків ваших. І ви сказали йому: Ні, таки царя постав над нами. А тепер ставайте перед Господнім лицем за вашими племенами та за вашими тисячами.

20 W hen Samuel brought all the families of Israel near, the name of the family group of Benjamin was drawn.

І привів Самуїл усі Ізраїлеві племена, і було виявлене Веніяминове плем'я.

21 T hen he brought the family group of Benjamin near by its families, and the name of the Matrite family was drawn. Then the name of Saul the son of Kish was drawn. But when they looked for him, he could not be found.

І привів він Веніяминове плем'я за родами його, і був виявлений рід Матріїв. І привів він рід Матріїв за їхніми мужчинами, і був виявлений Саул, син Кішів. І шукали його, та не знаходили.

22 S o they asked the Lord, “Has the man come here yet?” The Lord said, “See, he is hiding among the bags.”

І питалися Господа ще: Чи прийде він ще сюди? А Господь відповів: Он він заховався між речами!

23 T hey ran and brought him from there. And when he stood among the people, he was a head taller than any of them.

І вони побігли, і взяли його звідти. І він став серед народу, і був вищий від усього народу на цілу голову.

24 S amuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom the Lord has chosen? For sure there is no one like him among all the people.” So all the people called out and said, “Long live the king!”

І сказав Самуїл до всього народу: Чи бачите, кого вибрав Господь? Бо нема такого, як він, серед усього народу. І ввесь народ ізняв крик та й сказав: Хай живе цар!

25 T hen Samuel told the people the rights and duties of the king and his nation. He wrote them in a book and laid it before the Lord. Then Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his home.

А Самуїл промовляв до народу про права царства, і записав те до книги, та й поклав перед Господнім лицем. І відпустив Самуїл увесь народ, кожного до дому свого.

26 S aul went home to Gibeah. And the strong men whose hearts God had touched went with him.

І також Саул пішов до дому свого до Ґів'ї, а з ним пішли ті вояки, що Господь діткнувся їхніх сердець.

27 B ut some men of no worth said, “How can this man save us?” They hated him and did not bring him any gift. But he kept quiet.

А негідні сини говорили: Що, нас спасе отакий? І гордували ним, і не принесли йому дара. Та він мовчав.
