1 S amuel said to Saul, “The Lord sent me to choose you to be king over His people Israel. Now listen to the Words of the Lord.

І сказав Самуїл до Саула: Господь послав був мене помазати тебе на царя над народом Його, над Ізраїлем. А тепер послухайся голосу Господніх слів.

2 T his is what the Lord of All says. ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel in standing against them on the way, when they came up from Egypt.

Так сказав Господь Саваот: Я згадаю, що зробив був Амалик Ізраїлеві, що клав йому перешкоду на дорозі, коли він виходив із Єгипту.

3 N ow go and destroy Amalek. Destroy all they have, and do not let them live. Kill both man and woman, child and baby, cattle and sheep, camel and donkey.’”

Тепер іди, і поб'єш Амалика, і вчиниш закляттям усе, що його, і не змилосердишся над ним. І позабиваєш усе, від чоловіка аж до жінки, від дитини й аж до немовляти, від вола й аж до штуки дрібної худобини, від верблюда й аж до осла.

4 S o Saul called the people together and numbered them in Telaim. There were 200, 000 foot soldiers and 10, 000 men of Judah.

І Саул оповістив народ, і перелічив їх у Телаїмі, і двісті тисяч піхоти та десять тисяч мужа Юди.

5 S aul came to the city of Amalek and hid, waiting in the valley.

І прийшов Саул аж до Амаликового міста, та й засів у долині.

6 S aul said to the Kenites, “Go, leave the Amalekites, or I might destroy you with them. For you showed kindness to all the people of Israel when they came up from Egypt.” So the Kenites left the Amalekites.

І сказав Саул кенеянам: Ідіть, відокремтесь, вийдіть з-поміж Амаликитянина, щоб я не долучив вас до них, бо ви зробили були милість усім ізраїльтянам, коли вони виходили з Єгипту. І відокремився Кенеянин з-поміж Амалика.

7 T hen Saul destroyed the Amalekites, from Havilah as far as Shur, east of Egypt.

А Саул побив Амалика від Хавіли аж до місця, де йдеш до Шуру, що навпроти Єгипту.

8 H e took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and destroyed all the people with the sword.

І зловив він Аґаґа, амаликського царя, живого, а ввесь народ зробив закляттям, та й побив вістрям меча.

9 B ut Saul and the people did not kill Agag and the best of the sheep, the cattle, the fat animals ready to be killed, the lambs, and all that was good. They would not destroy them. But they destroyed everything that was hated and was of no worth. Saul Is No Longer King

Та змилосердився Саул і народ над Аґаґом, і над найліпшим з його худоби дрібної й з худоби його великої та з товару вгодованого, і над вівцями, та над усім добром, і не хотіли зробити їх закляттям. А все маловарте й худе його зробили закляттям.

10 T he Word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying,

І було Господнє слово до Самуїла й казало:

11 “ I am sorry that I have made Saul king. For he has turned away from following Me. He has not done what I told him to do.” Samuel was much troubled in his heart. He cried out to the Lord all night.

Жалкую, що Я настановив Саула за царя, бо він відвернувся від Мене, а слів Моїх не виконав. І запалився гнів Самуїлів, і він кликав до Господа цілу ніч.

12 W hen Samuel got up early in the morning to meet Saul, he was told, “Saul came to Carmel and set up a stone in his honor. Then he turned and went down to Gilgal.”

А рано вранці Самуїл устав, і пішов назустріч Саулові. І Самуїлові донесли, говорячи: Саул прийшов до Кармелу, і ось ставить собі пам'ятника, а потому повернувся й пішов, і зійшов до Ґілґалу.

13 S amuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, “May the Lord bring good to you. I have done what the Lord told me to do.”

І прийшов Самуїл до Саула, а Саул сказав йому: Благословенний ти в Господа! Я виконав слово Господнє.

14 B ut Samuel said, “Then why do I hear the sounds of sheep and cattle?”

А Самуїл сказав: А що це за мекання цієї отари в ушах моїх, та рик великої худоби, що я чую?

15 S aul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites. For the people saved the best of the sheep and cattle to give to the Lord your God. But we have destroyed all the rest.”

І сказав Саул: Від Амаликитянина привели їх, бо народ змилосердився над найліпшим із худоби дрібної та з худоби великої, щоб зарізати в жертву для Господа, Бога твого, а позостале вчинили закляттям.

16 T hen Samuel said to Saul, “Stop! I will tell you what the Lord said to me last night.” And Saul said to him, “Speak.”

А Самуїл сказав до Саула: Покинь, а я розповім тобі, що Господь говорив мені цієї ночі. А той сказав йому: Говори.

17 S amuel said, “Is it not true that even when you were not important in your own eyes, you were made the head of the families of Israel? The Lord chose you to be king over Israel.

І сказав Самуїл: Хоч ти малий був в очах своїх, чи ж ти не голова Ізраїлевих племен? Чи ж не помазав тебе Господь на царя над Ізраїлем?

18 A nd the Lord sent you to go and destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are no more.

І послав тебе Господь дорогою, і сказав: Іди, і вчиниш закляттям нечестивих амаликитян, і будеш воювати з ними, аж поки ти не вигубиш їх.

19 W hy then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? You rushed upon what was left after the battle and did what was sinful in the Lord’s eyes.”

І чому ти не послухався Господнього голосу, але кинувся на здобич, і зробив оце зло в Господніх очах?

20 S aul said to Samuel, “I did obey the voice of the Lord. I went where the Lord sent me. I have brought Agag the king of Amalek. And I have destroyed the Amalekites.

І сказав Саул до Самуїла: Та я послухався Господнього голосу, і пішов дорогою, якою послав був мене Господь, і привів я Аґаґа, царя амаликського, а Амалика зробив закляттям.

21 B ut the people took some of their things that were left. They took sheep and cattle and the best of the things to be destroyed, to give to the Lord your God at Gilgal.”

А народ узяв зо здобичі худобу дрібну та худобу велику, як початок закляття, щоб приносити в жертву Господеві, Богові твоєму, в Ґілґалі.

22 S amuel said, “Is the Lord pleased as much with burnt gifts as He is when He is obeyed? See, it is better to obey than to give gifts. It is better to listen than to give the fat of rams.

І сказав Самуїл: Чи жадання Господа цілопалень та жертов таке, як послух Господньому голосу? Таж послух ліпший від жертви, покірливість краща від баранячого лою!

23 T o go against what you are told is like the sin of witchcraft. Not to obey is like the sin of worshiping false gods. You have turned away from the Word of the Lord. So He has turned away from you being king.”

Бо непокірливість як гріх ворожбитства, а свавільство як провина та служба бовванам. Через те, що ти відкинув Господні слова, то Він відкинув тебе, щоб не був ти царем.

24 T hen Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned. I have sinned against the Word of the Lord and your words, because I was afraid of the people and listened to them.

І сказав Саул до Самуїла: Прогрішився я, бо переступив накази Господні та слова твої, бо я боявся народу, та послухався його голосу.

25 N ow I beg you, forgive my sin and return with me, that I may worship the Lord.”

А тепер прости ж мій гріх, і вернися зо мною, і я поклонюсь Господеві.

26 B ut Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you. For you have turned away from the Word of the Lord. And the Lord has turned away from you being king over Israel.”

Та Самуїл сказав до Саула: Не вернуся з тобою, бо ти погордив Господнім словом, а Господь погордив тобою, щоб не був ти царем над Ізраїлем.

27 A s Samuel turned to go, Saul took hold of part of his clothing, and it tore.

І повернувся Самуїл, щоб піти, а Саул схопив полу плаща його, та й відірвав.

28 S o Samuel said to him, “Today the Lord has torn the rule of Israel away from you. He has given it to your neighbor who is better than you.

І сказав до нього Самуїл: Господь відірвав сьогодні від тебе Ізраїлеве царство, та й передав його твоєму ближньому, ліпшому від тебе!

29 A nd the shining greatness of Israel will not lie or change His mind. For He is not a man that He should change His mind.”

І також Ізраїлева Слава не скаже неправди та не буде каятися, бо Він не людина, щоб каятись.

30 S aul said, “I have sinned. But I beg you, honor me now in front of the leaders of my people and in front of Israel. Return with me, that I may worship the Lord your God.”

А Саул сказав: Прогрішився я! Але вшануй й мене перед старшими мого народу та перед Ізраїлем, і вернися зо мною, а я поклонюся Господеві, Богові твоєму.

31 S o Samuel returned with Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord.

І вернувся Самуїл за Саулом, і Саул поклонився Господеві.

32 T hen Samuel said, “Bring me Agag, the king of the Amalekites.” Agag was happy when he came to him. Agag said, “For sure the bad feelings of death are past.”

І сказав Самуїл: Підведіть до мене Аґаґа, царя амаликського. І пішов до нього Аґаґ весело. І сказав Аґаґ: Справді, відступилася гіркота смерти!

33 B ut Samuel said, “As your sword has killed the children of women, so will your mother have no children.” And Samuel cut Agag to pieces before the Lord at Gilgal.

А Самуїл сказав: Як твій меч позбавляв жінок дітей, так позбавиться дітей твоя мати між жінками. І посік Самуїл Аґаґа перед Господнім лицем у Ґілґалі.

34 T hen Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went up to his house at Gibeah of Saul.

І пішов Самуїл до Рами, а Саул зійшов до дому свого, до Саулової Ґів'ї.

35 S amuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death. But Samuel was filled with sorrow because of Saul. And the Lord was sorry that He had made Saul king over Israel.

І більше не бачив Самуїл Саула аж до дня його смерти, та Самуїл сумував за Саулом. А Господь жалкував, що настановив був Саула царем над Ізраїлем.
