1 F or I have thought of all this, how good and wise men and their works are in the hand of God. Man does not know if love or hate is waiting for them.

Ото ж бо все це я до серця свого взяв, і бачило серце моє все оце, що праведні й мудрі та їхні учинки у Божій руці, так само любов чи ненависть: Людина не знає нічого, що є перед нею!

2 I t is the same for all. The same thing will happen to both the man who is good and the man who is sinful. The same thing will happen to the clean and the unclean, and to the man who gives a gift on the altar and to the man who does not. As the good man is, so is the sinner. As the man who swears is, so is the one who is afraid to swear.

Однакове всім випадає: праведному і безбожному, доброму й чистому та нечистому, і тому, хто жертву приносить, і тому, хто жертви не приносить, як доброму, так і грішникові, тому, хто клянеться, як і тому, хто клятви боїться!...

3 T his is a bad thing in all that is done under the sun, that the same thing happens to all men. Also the hearts of men are sinful and crazy all their lives. Then they join the dead.

Оце зле у всім, що під сонцем тим діється, що однакове всім випадає, і серце людських синів повне зла, і за життя їхнього безумство в їхньому серці, а по тому до мертвих відходять...

4 B ut there is hope for the one who is among the living. For sure a live dog is better off than a dead lion.

Хто знаходиться поміж живих, той має надію, бо краще собаці живому, ніж левові мертвому!

5 F or the living know they will die. But the dead know nothing, and they will receive nothing further, for they are forgotten.

Бо знають живі, що помруть, а померлі нічого не знають, і заплати немає вже їм, бо забута і пам'ять про них,

6 T heir love and hate and desire have already died. They will no longer have a part in what is done under the sun.

і їхнє кохання, і їхня ненависть, та заздрощі їхні загинули вже, і нема вже їм частки навіки ні в чому, що під сонцем тим діється!...

7 G o and eat your bread in happiness. Drink your wine with a happy heart. For God has already been pleased with your works.

Тож іди, їж із радістю хліб свій, та з серцем веселим вино своє пий, коли Бог уподобав Собі твої вчинки!

8 L et your clothes be white all the time. And let there always be oil on your head.

Нехай кожного часу одежа твоя буде біла, і нехай на твоїй голові не бракує оливи!

9 E njoy life with the woman you love all the days of your life that will soon be over. God has given you these days under the sun. This is the good you will get in life and in your work which you have done under the sun.

Заживай життя з жінкою, яку ти кохаєш, по всі дні марноти твоєї, що Бог дав для тебе під сонцем на всі дні марноти твоєї, бо оце твоя доля в житті та в твоєму труді, що під сонцем ним трудишся ти!

10 W hatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your strength. For there is no work or planning or learning or wisdom in the place of the dead where you are going.

Все, що всилі чинити рука твоя, теє роби, бо немає в шеолі, куди ти йдеш, ні роботи, ні роздуму, ані знання, ані мудрости!

11 A gain I saw under the sun that the race is not to the fast and the battle to the men of war. Bread is not to the wise and riches are not to the men of understanding. Favor is not to able workers. Time comes and goes and things happen for no reason to them all.

Знову я бачив під сонцем, що біг не у скорих, і бій не в хоробрих, а хліб не в премудрих, і не в розумних багатство, ні ласка у знавців, а від часу й нагоди залежні вони!

12 M an does not know his time. Like fish caught in a bad net, and birds caught in a trap, so men are trapped at a bad time when trouble comes upon them when they do not expect it. Wisdom Is Better Than Being Foolish

Бо часу свого людина не знає, мов риби, половлені в пагубну сітку, і мов птахи, захоплені в сільце, так хапаються людські сини за час лиха, коли воно нагло спадає на них!...

13 I have also seen this as wisdom under the sun, and it made me think.

Також оцю мудрість я бачив під сонцем, і велика для мене здавалась вона:

14 T here was a small city with few men in it, and a great king came to it. His army gathered around it and built a large wall to help them in battle against it.

Було мале місто, і було в ньому мало людей. І раз прийшов цар великий до нього, й його оточив, і побудував проти нього велику облогу.

15 B ut a poor wise man was found in the city, and he brought the city out of its trouble by his wisdom. Yet no one remembered that poor man.

Але в ньому знайшлася людина убога, та мудра, і вона врятувала те місто своєю премудрістю, та пізніше ніхто не згадав про цю вбогу людину!

16 S o I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the wisdom of the poor man is hated and his words are not carried out.

І я говорив: Краща мудрість за силу; однако погорджується мудрість бідного, і не слухаються його слів!

17 T he words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the loud words of a ruler among fools.

Слова мудрих, почуті в спокої, кращі від крику володаря поміж безглуздими.

18 W isdom is better than objects used in war, but one sinner destroys much good.

Мудрість краща від зброї військової, але один грішник погубить багато добра...
