¿Puedes atarle una soga en la nariz, y horadarle con ganchos la quijada?

3 W ill he beg you to be good to him? Will he speak soft words to you?

¿Acaso crees que te pedirá clemencia, o que con palabras dulces te pedirá su libertad?

4 W ill he make an agreement with you to take him and make him your servant forever?

¿Crees que se comprometerá contigo a ser tu siervo para siempre?

5 W ill you play with him as if he were a bird? Or will you put him on a rope for your young women?

¿Podrás jugar con él, como con un ave, y ponerle un lazo para que se diviertan tus hijas?

6 W ill traders talk about buying and selling him? Will they divide him among the store-keepers?

¿Ofrecerás con él un banquete para tus amigos? ¿Podrán los carniceros descuartizarlo y venderlo?

7 C an you fill his skin or his head with fish spears?

¿Podrás cortar con cuchillo su dura piel? ¿Podrás clavarle un arpón en la cabeza?

8 L ay your hand on him, and remember the battle. You will not do it again!

Haz el intento siquiera de tocarlo: ¡será una batalla memorable, que nunca más repetirás!

9 S ee, the hope of man is false. One is laid low even when seeing him.

»En vano espera quien pretenda domarlo; de sólo verlo cerca, el más valiente tiembla.

10 N o one is so powerful that he would wake him. Who then can stand before Me?

No hay nadie tan osado que lo quiera despertar; entonces, ¿quién podría enfrentarse a mí?

11 W ho has given Me everything, that I should pay him back? Whatever is under the whole heaven is Mine.

¿Quién me ha dado algo, para que se lo devuelva? ¡Mío es todo lo que hay debajo de los cielos!

12 “ I will not keep quiet about his legs, or his powerful strength, or the good way he is made.

»Aún me falta decir algo acerca de sus miembros, de su gran poder y de su elegante presencia.

13 W ho can take off his outside clothing? Who can get through his hard skin?

¿Hay alguien capaz de hacerle frente? ¿Alguien que se arme de valor y le coloque un freno?

14 W ho can open the doors of his mouth? Around his teeth is much fear.

¿Quién podrá abrirle esas potentes quijadas, sin que se espante al ver sus filosos colmillos?

15 H is hard covering is his pride. He is shut up as with a lock.

Está orgullosamente revestido de duros escudos, cuyo cerrado tejido resguarda su cuerpo.

16 O ne piece of his hard skin is so close to another that no air can come between them.

Tan estrechamente unidos están unos con otros, que ni el viento más fino los puede atravesar.

17 T hey are joined one to another. They hold on to each other and cannot be separated.

Cada escudo se entrelaza con el otro; están trabados entre sí, y no se pueden separar.

18 H is breath gives out light. And his eyes are like those of the first light of day.

Cuando esta bestia resopla, lanza fuego, y sus ojos brillan como la luz del amanecer.

19 B urning light goes out of his mouth. Fire comes out.

De su hocico brotan lenguas de fuego; ¡chispas de lumbre salen disparadas!

20 S moke goes out of his nostrils, as from a boiling pot and burning grass.

Por su trompa lanza humo como chimenea, ¡despide vapor como una olla en el fuego!

21 H is breath sets fire to coals. A fire goes out of his mouth.

Con sus resoplidos prende fuego a los carbones, pues brama y lanza fuego por sus fauces.

22 S trength is in his neck, and fear jumps in front of him.

La fuerza de su cuerpo está en su cuello; cuando ataca, cunde el miedo como polvo.

23 T he folds of his flesh are joined together. They are set in place and cannot be moved.

Su piel parece blanda, pero es dura; es tan firme y resistente como el hierro.

24 H is heart is as hard as a stone, even as hard as a grinding-stone.

Su corazón es duro como una roca, rígido como una piedra de molino.

25 W hen he raises himself up, the powerful are afraid. They are troubled because of his noise.

Aún los más valientes se le enfrentan temerosos, y llenos de miedo se rinden ante él.

26 T he sword that hits him cannot cut. And spears are of no use.

Si alguno le da alcance, con la espada no lo hiere, ni con lanza ni flechas, ni su escudo lo protege.

27 H e thinks of iron as straw, and brass as soft wood.

El hierro es para él como la paja, y el bronce es como un tronco podrido.

28 T he arrow cannot make him run away. Stones thrown at him are like dry grass to him.

No le espantan las flechas que sobre él caen, y las piedras lanzadas con honda le son como paja.

29 H e thinks of heavy sticks as dry grass. He laughs at the noise of the spear.

Para él, las armas son como hojas secas, y el silbido de la jabalina le resulta divertido.

30 T he parts under him are like sharp pieces of a pot. He spreads out like a grain crusher on the mud.

Su pecho está cubierto de agudas escamas, y al arrastrarse va abriendo surcos en el fango.

31 H e makes the sea boil like a pot. He makes the sea like a jar of oil.

Si se lanza al mar, éste hierve, y brotan candentes burbujas de agua.

32 H e makes his way shine behind him. One would think that the sea has white hair.

Tras de sí va dejando una brillante estela, ¡cabellera de plata se torna la blanca espuma!

33 N othing on earth is like him, one made without fear.

Nada en la tierra se le puede comparar; es un monstruo que a nada le teme.

34 H e looks on everything that is high. He is king over all that are proud.”
