Ti rivolgerà esso molte suppliche? Ti dirà delle parole dolci?

Farà esso alleanza con te perché tu lo prenda per sempre al tuo servizio?

5 W ill you play with him as if he were a bird? Or will you put him on a rope for your young women?

Scherzerai con lui come fosse un uccello? Lo attaccherai a un filo per divertire le tue ragazze?

6 W ill traders talk about buying and selling him? Will they divide him among the store-keepers?

Ne trafficheranno forse i pescatori? Lo spartiranno essi fra i negozianti?

7 C an you fill his skin or his head with fish spears?

Gli coprirai la pelle di frecce e la testa di ramponi?

Mettigli un po’ le mani addosso! Ti ricorderai del combattimento e non ci tornerai!

«Ecco, è vana la speranza di chi lo assale; basta scorgerlo e uno soccombe.

Nessuno è tanto ardito da provocarlo. E chi dunque oserà starmi di fronte?

Chi mi ha anticipato qualcosa perché io glielo debba rendere? Sotto tutti i cieli, ogni cosa è mia.

E non voglio tacere delle sue membra, della sua gran forza e della bellezza della sua armatura.

13 W ho can take off his outside clothing? Who can get through his hard skin?

Chi l’ha mai spogliato della sua corazza ? Chi è penetrato fra la doppia fila dei suoi denti?

14 W ho can open the doors of his mouth? Around his teeth is much fear.

Chi gli ha aperti i due battenti della gola? Intorno alla chiusura dei suoi denti sta il terrore.

15 H is hard covering is his pride. He is shut up as with a lock.

Superbe sono le file dei suoi scudi, strettamente uniti come da un sigillo.

16 O ne piece of his hard skin is so close to another that no air can come between them.

Uno tocca l’altro, tra loro non passa l’aria.

17 T hey are joined one to another. They hold on to each other and cannot be separated.

Sono saldati assieme, si tengono stretti, sono inseparabili.

18 H is breath gives out light. And his eyes are like those of the first light of day.

I suoi starnuti danno sprazzi di luce; i suoi occhi sono come le palpebre dell’aurora.

19 B urning light goes out of his mouth. Fire comes out.

Dalla sua bocca partono vampate, ne sprizzano fuori scintille di fuoco.

20 S moke goes out of his nostrils, as from a boiling pot and burning grass.

Dalle sue narici esce un fumo, come da una pentola che bolle o da una caldaia.

21 H is breath sets fire to coals. A fire goes out of his mouth.

L’alito suo accende i carboni, una fiamma gli esce dalla gola.

22 S trength is in his neck, and fear jumps in front of him.

Nel suo collo risiede la forza, davanti a lui si fugge terrorizzati.

23 T he folds of his flesh are joined together. They are set in place and cannot be moved.

Compatte sono in lui le parti flosce della sua carne, gli stanno salde addosso, non si muovono.

24 H is heart is as hard as a stone, even as hard as a grinding-stone.

Il suo cuore è duro come il sasso, duro come la macina di sotto.

25 W hen he raises himself up, the powerful are afraid. They are troubled because of his noise.

Quando si rizza, tremano i più forti, e dalla paura sono fuori di sé.

26 T he sword that hits him cannot cut. And spears are of no use.

Invano lo si attacca con la spada; a nulla valgono lancia, giavellotto, corazza.

27 H e thinks of iron as straw, and brass as soft wood.

Il ferro è per lui come paglia; il bronzo, come legno tarlato.

28 T he arrow cannot make him run away. Stones thrown at him are like dry grass to him.

La figlia dell’arco non lo mette in fuga; le pietre della fionda si mutano per lui in stoppia.

29 H e thinks of heavy sticks as dry grass. He laughs at the noise of the spear.

Stoppia gli pare la mazza e ride del fremere della lancia.

30 T he parts under him are like sharp pieces of a pot. He spreads out like a grain crusher on the mud.

Il suo ventre è armato di punte acute, lascia come tracce d’erpice sul fango.

31 H e makes the sea boil like a pot. He makes the sea like a jar of oil.

Fa bollire l’abisso come una caldaia, del mare fa come un gran vaso da profumi.

32 H e makes his way shine behind him. One would think that the sea has white hair.

Si lascia dietro una scia di luce; l’abisso pare coperto di bianca chioma.

33 N othing on earth is like him, one made without fear.

Non c’è sulla terra chi lo domi; è stato fatto per non avere paura.
