1 I n the twenty-third year of Ahaziah’s son Joash the king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu became the king of Israel at Samaria. He ruled for seventeen years.

Nel ventitreesimo anno di Ioas, figlio di Acazia, re di Giuda, Ioacaz, figlio di Ieu, cominciò a regnare sopra Israele a Samaria. Regnò diciassette anni.

2 J ehoahaz did what was sinful in the eyes of the Lord. He followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel sin. He did not turn from them.

Egli fece ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, imitò i peccati con i quali Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, aveva fatto peccare Israele e non se ne allontanò.

3 S o the anger of the Lord burned against Israel. He put them always under the power of King Hazael of Syria, and Ben-hadad the son of Hazael.

L’ira del Signore si accese contro gli Israeliti, ed egli li diede nelle mani di Azael, re di Siria, e nelle mani di Ben-Adad, figlio di Azael, per tutto quel tempo.

4 T hen Jehoahaz begged for the Lord’s favor, and the Lord listened to him. For He saw the bad power held over Israel. He saw how the king of Syria made it hard for them.

Ma Ioacaz implorò il Signore e il Signore lo esaudì, perché vide l’oppressione sotto la quale il re di Siria teneva Israele.

5 S o the Lord gave Israel someone to save them. And they were saved from the power of the Syrians. The people of Israel lived in their tents as before.

Il Signore diede un liberatore agli Israeliti, i quali riuscirono a sottrarsi al potere dei Siri, in modo che i figli d’Israele poterono abitare nelle loro tende, come prima.

6 B ut they did not turn away from the sins of the family of Jeroboam, which made Israel sin. They walked in those sins. And the object of the false goddess Asherah was left standing in Samaria.

Ma non si allontanarono dai peccati con i quali la casa di Geroboamo aveva fatto peccare Israele; e continuarono a camminare per quella via; persino l’idolo di Astarte rimase in piedi a Samaria.

7 T he king of Syria did not leave to Jehoahaz an army of more than fifty horsemen, ten war-wagons and 10, 000 foot-soldiers. For the king of Syria had destroyed them and made them like the dust of beaten grain.

Di tutta la sua gente, a Ioacaz, il Signore non aveva lasciato che cinquanta cavalieri, dieci carri e diecimila fanti, perché il re di Siria li aveva distrutti e li aveva ridotti come la polvere che si calpesta.

8 N ow the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, all he did and his strength, are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.

9 W hen Jehoahaz died, they buried him in Samaria. And his son Joash became king in his place. Jehoash Rules Israel

10 I n the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz became king of Israel in Samaria. He ruled for sixteen years.

Nel trentasettesimo anno di Ioas, re di Giuda, Ioas, figlio di Ioacaz, cominciò a regnare sopra Israele a Samaria, e regnò sedici anni.

11 A nd he did what was sinful in the eyes of the Lord. He did not turn away from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, in which he made Israel sin. But he walked in those sins.

Egli fece ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore e non si allontanò da nessuno dei peccati con i quali Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, aveva fatto peccare Israele, ma seguì la stessa strada.

12 J ehoash did many things. With his strength he fought against Amaziah king of Judah. The rest of his acts are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.

Il resto delle azioni di Ioas, tutto quello che fece e il valore con il quale combatté contro Amasia, re di Giuda, sono scritte nel libro delle Cronache dei re d’Israele.

13 J ehoash died, and Jeroboam sat on his throne. Jehoash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. The Death of Elisha

Ioas si addormentò con i suoi padri e Geroboamo salì sul trono di lui. E Ioas fu sepolto a Samaria con i re d’Israele.

14 E lisha became sick with the sickness of which he was to die. And Joash the king of Israel came down to him and cried over him, saying, “My father, my father, the war-wagons of Israel and its horsemen!”

Eliseo si ammalò di una malattia che doveva condurlo alla morte; e Ioas, re d’Israele, scese a trovarlo, pianse su di lui e disse: «Padre mio, padre mio! Carro e cavalleria d’Israele!»

15 E lisha said to him, “Take a bow and arrows.” So he took a bow and arrows.

Eliseo gli disse: «Prendi un arco e delle frecce». E Ioas prese un arco e delle frecce.

16 T hen he said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow.” So he put his hand on it. Then Elisha laid his hands on the king’s hands.

Eliseo disse al re d’Israele: «Impugna l’arco». Egli impugnò l’arco; Eliseo posò le sue mani sulle mani del re,

17 A nd he said, “Open the window toward the east,” and he opened it. Then Elisha said, “Shoot!” And he shot. Elisha said, “The Lord’s arrow of winning the battle! The arrow of winning the battle against Syria! For you will fight the Syrians at Aphek until you have destroyed them.

poi gli disse: «Apri la finestra a oriente». E Ioas l’aprì. Allora Eliseo disse: «Tira!» Egli tirò. Ed Eliseo disse: «Questa è una freccia di vittoria da parte del Signore: la freccia della vittoria contro la Siria. Tu sconfiggerai i Siri ad Afec sino a sterminarli».

18 T hen Elisha said, “Take the arrows,” and he took them. He said to the king of Israel, “Hit the ground,” and he hit it three times, and stopped.

Poi disse: «Prendi le frecce». Ioas le prese, ed Eliseo disse al re d’Israele: «Percuoti il suolo». Egli lo percosse tre volte, poi si fermò.

19 S o the man of God was angry with him and said, “You should have hit it five or six times. Then you would have fought Syria until you had destroyed it. But now you will win the fight against Syria only three times.”

L’uomo di Dio si adirò contro di lui e disse: «Avresti dovuto percuoterlo cinque o sei volte; allora tu avresti sconfitto i Siri fino a sterminarli; mentre adesso non li sconfiggerai che tre volte». Eliseo morì e fu sepolto.

20 E lisha died, and they buried him. Now groups of Moabite soldiers would come and fight in the land in the spring of the year.

L’anno seguente delle bande di Moabiti fecero una scorreria nel paese.

21 A s a man was being buried, some Moabite soldiers were seen, so the man was thrown into Elisha’s grave. When the man touched the bones of Elisha, he came alive and stood up on his feet. The War between Israel and Syria

Mentre alcune persone stavano seppellendo un morto, scorsero una di quelle bande e gettarono la salma nella tomba di Eliseo. Appena toccò le ossa di Eliseo, il morto risuscitò e si alzò in piedi.

22 N ow King Hazael of Syria had made it hard for Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.

Azael, re di Siria, aveva oppresso gli Israeliti durante tutta la vita di Ioacaz;

23 B ut the Lord showed them kindness and loving-pity and turned to them because of His agreement with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He would not destroy them or put them away from Him until now.

ma il Signore fece loro grazia, ne ebbe compassione e fu loro favorevole a causa del suo patto con Abraamo, con Isacco e con Giacobbe, e non li volle distruggere; e, fino a ora, non li ha respinti dalla sua presenza.

24 W hen King Hazael of Syria died, his son Ben-hadad became king in his place.

Azael, re di Siria, morì, e Ben-Adad, suo figlio, regnò al suo posto.

25 T hen Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took back from Hazael’s son Ben-hadad the cities he had taken in war from his father Jehoahaz. Three times Joash won in battle against him and took back the cities of Israel.

E Ioas, figlio di Ioacaz, riprese a Ben-Adad, figlio di Azael, le città che Azael aveva conquistate in guerra a Ioacaz suo padre. Ioas lo sconfisse tre volte e ricuperò così le città d’Israele.
