1 P aul said, “Brothers and fathers, listen to what I have to say to you.”

«Fratelli e padri, ascoltate ciò che ora vi dico a mia difesa».

2 W hen they heard him speak to them in their own language, they stopped making noise. Then he said,

Quando ebbero udito che egli parlava loro in lingua ebraica, fecero ancora più silenzio. Poi disse:

3 “ I am a Jew. I was born in the city of Tarsus in the country of Cilicia. When I was a young man, I lived here in Jerusalem. I went to Gamaliel’s school and learned all about the Law of our early fathers. I worked hard for God as you all do today.

«Io sono un Giudeo, nato a Tarso di Cilicia, ma allevato in questa città, educato ai piedi di Gamaliele nella rigida osservanza della legge dei padri; sono stato zelante per la causa di Dio, come voi tutti siete oggi;

4 “ I worked hard and killed men and women who believed as I believe today. I put them in chains and sent them to prison.

5 T he head religious leader and the leaders of the people can tell you this is true. I got letters from them to take to our Jewish brothers in the city of Damascus. come me ne sono testimoni il sommo sacerdote e tutto il collegio degli anziani; avute da loro delle lettere per i fratelli, mi recavo a Damasco per condurre legati a Gerusalemme anche quelli che erano là, perché fossero puniti.

6 “ I was near Damascus. All at once, about noon, I saw a bright light from heaven shining around me.

Mentre ero per strada e mi avvicinavo a Damasco, verso mezzogiorno, improvvisamente dal cielo mi sfolgorò intorno una gran luce.

7 I fell to the ground. A voice said to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you work so hard against Me?’

Caddi a terra e udii una voce che mi disse: “Saulo, Saulo, perché mi perseguiti?”

8 I said, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, the One you are working against.’

Io risposi: “Chi sei, Signore?” Ed egli mi disse: “Io sono Gesù il Nazareno, che tu perseguiti”.

9 T hose who were with me saw the light. But they did not hear Him speaking to me.

Coloro che erano con me videro sì la luce, ma non intesero la voce di colui che mi parlava.

10 I asked, ‘Lord, what should I do?’ The Lord said to me, ‘Get up! Go to Damascus. You will be told what to do there.’

Allora dissi: “Signore, che devo fare?” E il Signore mi disse: “Àlzati, va’ a Damasco, e là ti saranno dette tutte le cose che ti è ordinato di fare”.

11 “ I could not see because of the bright light. Those who were with me had to lead me by the hand until we came to Damascus.

E siccome non ci vedevo più a causa del fulgore di quella luce, fui condotto per mano da quelli che erano con me; e così giunsi a Damasco.

12 A nanias lived there. He obeyed the Law and was respected by all the Jews.

Un certo Anania, uomo pio secondo la legge, al quale tutti i Giudei che abitavano là rendevano buona testimonianza,

13 H e came and stood near me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ At once I was able to see him.

venne da me e, accostatosi, mi disse: “Fratello Saulo, recupera la vista”. E in quell’istante riebbi la vista e lo guardai.

14 T hen Ananias said, ‘The God of our fathers chose you to know what He wants done. He chose you to see Jesus Christ, the One Right with God, and to hear His voice.

Egli soggiunse: “Il Dio dei nostri padri ti ha destinato a conoscere la sua volontà, a vedere il Giusto e ad ascoltare una parola dalla sua bocca.

15 Y ou are to tell all men what you have seen and heard.

Perché tu gli sarai testimone davanti a tutti gli uomini delle cose che hai viste e udite.

16 W hat are you waiting for? Get up! Be baptized. Have your sins washed away by calling on His name.’ Paul Is Called to Work with the People Who Are Not Jews

E ora, perché indugi? Àlzati, sii battezzato e lavato dei tuoi peccati, invocando il suo nome ”.

17 “ I came back to Jerusalem. When I was praying in the house of God, I had a dream.

Dopo il mio ritorno a Gerusalemme, mentre pregavo nel tempio, fui rapito in estasi

18 I saw Him as He said to me, ‘Get out of Jerusalem! They will not listen to you when you tell them about Me!’

e vidi Gesù che mi diceva: “Affrèttati, esci presto da Gerusalemme, perché essi non riceveranno la tua testimonianza su di me”.

19 I said, ‘Lord, they know I took Christians out of every Jewish place of worship. I had them beaten and put in prison.

E io dissi: “Signore, essi sanno che io incarceravo e flagellavo nelle sinagoghe quelli che credevano in te;

20 A lso when Stephen was killed, I stood there and watched them throw stones at him. Those who threw the stones had me watch their coats.’

quando si versava il sangue di Stefano, tuo testimone, anch’io ero presente e approvavo, e custodivo i vestiti di coloro che lo uccidevano”.

21 T he Lord said to me, ‘Go! I will send you far away to the people who are not Jews.’ ”

Ma egli mi disse: “Va’, perché io ti manderò lontano, tra i popoli”».

22 T hey listened to him until he said that. Then they all cried out with loud voices, “Kill him! Take such a man from the earth! He should not live!”

Lo ascoltarono fino a questa parola; poi alzarono la voce, dicendo: «Togli via dal mondo un uomo simile; perché non è degno di vivere».

23 T hey kept on calling out. Then they pulled off their coats and threw dust in the air. Paul Tells Who He Is

Com’essi gridavano e gettavano via i loro vestiti e lanciavano polvere in aria,

24 T he captain told them to bring Paul into the soldiers’ building. He told his soldiers to find out from Paul, by beating him, why the people were crying out against him.

il tribuno comandò che Paolo fosse condotto nella fortezza e che venisse interrogato mediante tortura, allo scopo di sapere per quale motivo gridassero così contro di lui.

25 A s they tied him up, Paul said to the soldier, “Does the law say that you can beat a Roman citizen when no one has said he is guilty?”

Quando lo ebbero disteso e legato con le cinghie, Paolo disse al centurione che era presente: «Vi è lecito flagellare un cittadino romano, che non è stato ancora condannato?»

26 W hen the soldier heard this, he told it to the captain. He said, “Listen! What are you doing? This man is a Roman citizen.”

Il centurione, udito questo, andò a riferirlo al tribuno, dicendo: «Che stai per fare? Quest’uomo è romano!»

27 T he captain came and asked Paul, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” Paul said, “Yes!”

Il tribuno andò da Paolo e gli chiese: «Dimmi, sei romano?» Ed egli rispose: «Sì».

28 T he captain said, “I had to pay a lot of money to be a citizen.” Paul said, “But I was born a Roman.”

Il tribuno replicò: «Io ho acquistato questa cittadinanza per una grande somma di denaro». E Paolo disse: «Io, invece, l’ho di nascita».

29 T hose who were going to beat him left him at once. The captain was also afraid when he heard that Paul was a Roman citizen because he had him tied. Paul Stands in Front of the Religious Leaders’ Court

Allora quelli che stavano per sottoporlo a interrogatorio si ritirarono subito da lui; e anche il tribuno, sapendo che egli era romano, ebbe paura perché l’aveva fatto legare. Paolo davanti al sinedrio

30 T he next day they took off the chains that were holding Paul. The captain wanted to know why the Jews wanted to kill him. So the captain told the head religious leaders to gather for their court. They brought Paul and put him in front of them.

Il giorno seguente, volendo sapere con certezza di che cosa egli fosse accusato dai Giudei, lo liberò e ordinò ai capi dei sacerdoti e a tutto il sinedrio di radunarsi; e, condotto giù Paolo, lo fece comparire davanti a loro.
