Ma io vorrei parlare con l’Onnipotente, ci terrei a ragionare con Dio;

4 B ut you cover things with lies. You are doctors of no worth.

poiché voi siete inventori di menzogne, siete tutti quanti medici da nulla.

5 I f only you would be quiet, and that would show your wisdom!

Oh, se faceste silenzio! Esso vi sarebbe contato come saggezza.

6 H ear what I think. Listen to the arguing of my lips.

Ascoltate, vi prego, quel che ho da rimproverarvi; state attenti alle repliche delle mie labbra!

7 W ill you say what is not true for God? Will you lie for Him?

Volete dunque difendere Dio parlando con menzogna? Sostenere la sua causa con parole di frode?

8 W ill you show favor for Him? Will you argue for God?

Volete avere riguardo alla sua persona? E costituirvi difensori di Dio?

9 W ill it be well when He tests you? Or do you lie to Him as one lies to a man?

Sarà un bene per voi quando egli vi scruterà a fondo? Credete di ingannarlo come s’inganna un uomo?

10 F or sure He will speak strong words to you if you show favor in secret.

Certo egli vi riprenderà severamente, se nel vostro segreto avete dei riguardi personali.

11 W ill not His great power make you afraid? Will not the fear of Him come upon you?

La sua maestà non vi farà sgomenti? Il suo terrore non piomberà su di voi?

12 Y our wise sayings are sayings of ashes. Your strength is the strength of clay.

I vostri detti memorabili sono massime di cenere; i vostri baluardi son baluardi d’argilla.

13 “ Be quiet so that I may speak. Then let come on me what will.

«Tacete, lasciatemi stare; voglio parlare io, succeda quel che succeda!

14 W hy should I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hands?

Perché dovrei prendere la mia carne con i denti? E trattenere la mia vita con le mie mani?

15 E ven though He would kill me, yet I will trust in Him. I will argue my ways to His face.

Ecco, mi uccida pure! Oh, continuerò a sperare. Soltanto, io difenderò in faccia a lui il mio comportamento!

16 T his will save me, for a sinful man may not come to Him.

Anche questo servirà alla mia salvezza; poiché un empio non ardirebbe presentarsi a lui.

17 B e careful to listen to my words. Let what I say fill your ears.

Ascoltate attentamente il mio discorso, porgete orecchio a quanto sto per dichiararvi.

18 S ee, I am ready to tell everything, and all will know I am right.

Ecco, io ho predisposto ogni elemento per la causa; so che sarò riconosciuto giusto.

19 W ho will talk against me? For then I would be quiet and die.

C’è qualcuno che voglia farmi opposizione? Se c’è, io taccio e sono pronto a morire.

20 “ Only two things I ask of You, and then I will not hide from Your face.

Ma, o Dio, concedimi solo due cose, e non mi nasconderò dalla tua presenza:

21 T ake Your hand from me, and do not let the fear of You make me so afraid.

ritira da me la tua mano e fa che i tuoi terrori non mi spaventino più.

22 T hen call, and I will answer. Or let me speak, and You answer me.

Poi interrogami e io risponderò; oppure parlerò io, e tu replicherai.

23 H ow many are my sins and wrong-doings? Help me to know my wrong-doing and sin.

Quante sono le mie iniquità, quanti i miei peccati? Fammi conoscere la mia trasgressione, il mio peccato!

24 W hy do You hide Your face, and think of me as one who hates You?

Perché nascondi il tuo volto e mi consideri un nemico?

25 W ill You make a wind-blown leaf afraid? Will You go after the dry parts of a grain-field that have no worth?

Vuoi dunque atterrire una foglia portata via dal vento? Vuoi forse perseguitare una pagliuzza inaridita?

26 F or You write bitter things against me. You punish me for the sins I did when I was young.

Tu mi condanni a pene così amare e mi fai espiare gli sbagli della mia giovinezza;

27 Y ou put chains on my feet, and watch everything I do. You let me walk only so far.

tu metti i miei piedi nei ceppi, spii tutti i miei movimenti e prendi nota delle orme dei miei piedi.

28 I am wasting away like a piece of dead wood, like clothing eaten by the moth.

Intanto questo mio corpo si disfa come legno tarlato, come un abito roso dal tarlo.
