1 A fter this Jesus went over to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. It is sometimes called Tiberias.

Dopo queste cose Gesù se ne andò all’altra riva del mare di Galilea, cioè il mare di Tiberiade.

2 M any people followed Him. They saw the powerful works He did on those who were sick.

Una gran folla lo seguiva, perché vedeva i segni che egli faceva sugli infermi.

3 J esus went up on a mountain and sat down with His followers.

Ma Gesù salì sul monte e là si pose a sedere con i suoi discepoli.

4 T he special religious supper to remember how the Jews left Egypt was soon.

Or la Pasqua, la festa dei Giudei, era vicina.

5 J esus looked up and saw many people coming to Him. He said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread to feed these people?”

Gesù dunque, alzati gli occhi e vedendo che una gran folla veniva verso di lui, disse a Filippo: «Dove compreremo del pane perché questa gente abbia da mangiare?»

6 H e said this to see what Philip would say. Jesus knew what He would do.

Diceva così per metterlo alla prova; perché sapeva bene quello che stava per fare.

7 P hilip said to Him, “The money we have is not enough to buy bread to give each one a little.”

Filippo gli rispose: «Duecento denari di pani non bastano perché ciascuno ne riceva un pezzetto».

8 O ne of His followers was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He said to Jesus,

Uno dei suoi discepoli, Andrea, fratello di Simon Pietro, gli disse:

9 “ There is a boy here who has five loaves of barley bread and two small fish. What is that for so many people?”

«C’è qui un ragazzo che ha cinque pani d’orzo e due pesci; ma che cosa sono per così tanta gente?»

10 J esus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was much grass in that place. About five thousand men sat down.

Gesù disse: «Fateli sedere». C’era molta erba in quel luogo. La gente dunque si sedette, ed erano circa cinquemila uomini.

11 J esus took the loaves and gave thanks. Then He gave the bread to those who were sitting down. The fish were given out the same way. The people had as much as they wanted.

Gesù quindi prese i pani e, dopo aver reso grazie, li distribuì alla gente seduta; lo stesso fece dei pesci, quanti ne vollero.

12 W hen they were filled, Jesus said to His followers, “Gather up the pieces that are left. None will be wasted.”

Quando furono saziati, disse ai suoi discepoli: «Raccogliete i pezzi avanzati, perché niente si perda».

13 T he followers gathered the pieces together. Twelve baskets were filled with pieces of barley bread. These were left after all the people had eaten.

Essi quindi li raccolsero, e riempirono dodici ceste con i pezzi dei cinque pani d’orzo che erano avanzati a quelli che avevano mangiato.

14 T he people saw the powerful work Jesus had done. They said, “It is true! This is the One Who speaks for God Who is to come into the world.” Jesus Walks on the Water

La gente dunque, avendo visto il segno che Gesù aveva fatto, disse: «Questi è certo il profeta che deve venire nel mondo».

15 J esus knew they were about to come and take Him to make Him king, so He went to the mountain by Himself.

Gesù, quindi, sapendo che stavano per venire a rapirlo per farlo re, si ritirò di nuovo sul monte, da solo. Gesù cammina sul mare

16 W hen evening had come, His followers went down to the lake.

Quando fu sera, i suoi discepoli scesero al mare

17 T hey got into a boat and started to cross the lake to go to the city of Capernaum. By this time it was dark. Jesus had not come back to them yet.

e, montati in una barca, si diressero all’altra riva, verso Capernaum. Era già buio e Gesù non era ancora venuto presso di loro.

18 A strong wind was making high waves on the lake.

Il mare era agitato, perché tirava un forte vento.

19 T hey were about half way across the lake when they saw Jesus walking on the water. As He got near the boat, they were afraid.

Come ebbero remato per circa venticinque o trenta stadi, videro Gesù camminare sul mare e accostarsi alla barca; ed ebbero paura.

20 B ut Jesus called to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.”

Ma egli disse loro: «Sono io, non temete».

21 T hey were glad to take Him into the boat. At once they got to the other side where they wanted to go. Jesus Teaches Many People

Essi dunque lo vollero prendere nella barca, e subito la barca toccò terra là dove erano diretti. Gesù, il pane della vita

22 T he next day the people on the other side of the lake saw no other boat there but the one His followers had been in. The people knew Jesus had not gone with His followers in the boat because they had gone alone.

Il giorno seguente, la folla che era rimasta sull’altra riva del mare si rese conto che là non c’era altro che una sola barca e che Gesù non vi era salito con i suoi discepoli, ma che i discepoli erano partiti da soli.

23 T here were other boats from Tiberias that had come near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.

Altre barche, intanto, erano giunte da Tiberiade, vicino al luogo dove avevano mangiato il pane dopo che il Signore aveva reso grazie.

24 T he people saw that Jesus and His followers were not there. They got into boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.

La folla, dunque, quando ebbe visto che Gesù non era là, e nemmeno i suoi discepoli, montò in quelle barche e andò a Capernaum in cerca di Gesù.

25 T he people found Him on the other side of the lake. They said to Him, “Teacher, when did You come here?”

Trovatolo di là dal mare, gli dissero: «Rabbì, quando sei giunto qui?»

26 J esus said to them, “For sure, I tell you, you are not looking for Me because of the powerful works. You are looking for Me because you ate bread and were filled.

Gesù rispose loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che voi mi cercate non perché avete visto dei segni, ma perché avete mangiato dei pani e siete stati saziati.

27 D o not work for food that does not last. Work for food that lasts forever. The Son of Man will give you that kind of food. God the Father has shown He will do this.” Jesus Teaches about Doing the Work of God

Adoperatevi non per il cibo che perisce, ma per il cibo che dura in vita eterna, e che il Figlio dell’uomo vi darà; poiché su di lui il Padre, cioè Dio, ha posto il proprio sigillo».

28 T hen the people said to Him, “What are the works God wants us to do?”

Essi dunque gli dissero: «Che dobbiamo fare per compiere le opere di Dio?»

29 J esus said to them, “This is the work of God, that you put your trust in the One He has sent.”

Gesù rispose loro: «Questa è l’opera di Dio: che crediate in colui che egli ha mandato».

30 T hey said to Him, “Can You show us some powerful work? Then we can see it and believe You. What will You do?

Allora essi gli dissero: «Quale segno fai, dunque, affinché lo vediamo e ti crediamo? Che operi?

31 O ur early fathers ate bread that came from heaven in the desert. This happened as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” Jesus Is the Bread of Life

I nostri padri mangiarono la manna nel deserto, come è scritto: “Egli diede loro da mangiare del pane venuto dal cielo” ».

32 T hen Jesus said to the people, “For sure, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven. My Father gives you the true Bread from heaven.

Gesù disse loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che non Mosè vi ha dato il pane che viene dal cielo, ma il Padre mio vi dà il vero pane che viene dal cielo.

33 T he Bread of God is He Who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

Poiché il pane di Dio è quello che scende dal cielo, e dà vita al mondo».

34 T hey said to Him, “Sir, give us this Bread all the time.”

Essi quindi gli dissero: «Signore, dacci sempre di questo pane».

35 J esus said to them, “I am the Bread of Life. He who comes to Me will never be hungry. He who puts his trust in Me will never be thirsty.

Gesù disse loro: «Io sono il pane della vita; chi viene a me non avrà più fame e chi crede in me non avrà mai più sete.

36 I said to you that you have seen Me and yet you do not put your trust in Me.

Ma io ve l’ho detto: “Voi {mi} avete visto, eppure non credete!”

37 A ll whom My Father has given to Me will come to Me. I will never turn away anyone who comes to Me.

Tutti quelli che il Padre mi dà verranno a me; e colui che viene a me, non lo caccerò fuori;

38 I came down from heaven. I did not come to do what I wanted to do. I came to do what My Father wanted Me to do. He is the One Who sent Me.

perché sono disceso dal cielo non per fare la mia volontà, ma la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato.

39 “ The Father sent Me. He did not want Me to lose any of all those He gave Me. He wants Me to raise them to life on the last day.

Questa è la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato: che io non perda nessuno di quelli che egli mi ha dati, ma che li risusciti nell’ultimo giorno.

40 H e wants everyone who sees the Son to put his trust in Him and have life that lasts forever. I will raise that one up on the last day.”

Poiché questa è la volontà del Padre mio: che chiunque contempla il Figlio e crede in lui, abbia vita eterna; e io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno».

41 T he Jews talked among themselves against Him. They did not like it because He said, “I am the Bread that came down from heaven.”

Perciò i Giudei mormoravano di lui perché aveva detto: «Io sono il pane che è disceso dal cielo».

42 T hey asked each other, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph? We know His father and mother. How can He say, ‘I came down from heaven’ ?”

Dicevano: «Non è costui Gesù, il figlio di Giuseppe, del quale conosciamo il padre e la madre? Come mai ora dice: “Io sono disceso dal cielo”?»

43 J esus said to them, “Do not talk among yourselves against Me.

Gesù rispose loro: «Non mormorate tra di voi.

44 T he Father sent Me. No man can come to Me unless the Father gives him the desire to come to Me. Then I will raise him to life on the last day.

Nessuno può venire a me se il Padre che mi ha mandato non lo attira; e io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno.

45 T he early preachers wrote, ‘They will all be taught of God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from Him comes to Me.

È scritto nei profeti: “Saranno tutti istruiti da Dio”. Chiunque ha udito il Padre e ha imparato da lui, viene a me.

46 N o one has seen the Father. I am the only One Who has seen Him.

Perché nessuno ha visto il Padre, se non colui che è da Dio; egli ha visto il Padre.

47 F or sure, I tell you, he who puts his trust in Me has life that lasts forever.

In verità, in verità vi dico: chi crede ha vita eterna.

48 I am the Bread of Life.

Io sono il pane della vita.

49 Y our early fathers ate bread that came from heaven in the desert. They died.

I vostri padri mangiarono la manna nel deserto e morirono.

50 B ut this is the Bread that comes down from heaven. The one who eats it never dies.

Questo è il pane che discende dal cielo, affinché chi ne mangia non muoia.

51 I am the Living Bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats this Bread, he will live forever. The Bread which I will give is My flesh. I will give this for the life of the world.”

Io sono il pane vivente che è disceso dal cielo; se uno mangia di questo pane vivrà in eterno; e il pane che io darò per la vita del mondo è la mia carne ».

52 T he Jews argued among themselves, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?”

I Giudei dunque discutevano tra di loro, dicendo: «Come può costui darci da mangiare la sua carne?»

53 J esus said to them, “For sure, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you do not have life in you.

Perciò Gesù disse loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che se non mangiate la carne del Figlio dell’uomo e non bevete il suo sangue, non avete vita in voi.

54 W hoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has life that lasts forever. I will raise him up on the last day.

Chi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue ha vita eterna; e io lo risusciterò nell’ultimo giorno.

55 M y flesh is true food and My blood is true drink.

Perché la mia carne è vero cibo e il mio sangue è vera bevanda.

56 W hoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood lives in Me and I live in him.

Chi mangia la mia carne e beve il mio sangue dimora in me, e io in lui.

57 T he living Father sent Me and I live because of Him. In the same way, the one who eats Me will live because of Me.

Come il Padre vivente mi ha mandato e io vivo a motivo del Padre, così chi mi mangia vivrà anch’egli a motivo di me.

58 I am this Bread that came down from heaven. It is not like the bread that your early fathers ate and they died. Whoever eats this Bread will live forever.”

Questo è il pane che è disceso dal cielo; non come quello che hanno mangiato i padri e sono morti; chi mangia di questo pane vivrà in eterno».

59 J esus said these things in the Jewish place of worship while He was teaching in the city of Capernaum. The Troubled Followers Leave Jesus

Queste cose disse Gesù, insegnando nella sinagoga di Capernaum. Gesù mette alla prova la lealtà dei discepoli

60 A fter hearing this, many of His followers said, “This teaching is too hard! Who can listen to it?”

Perciò molti dei suoi discepoli, dopo aver udito, dissero: «Questo parlare è duro; chi può ascoltarlo?»

61 J esus knew His followers talked against what He had said. He said to them, “Does this trouble you?

Gesù, sapendo dentro di sé che i suoi discepoli mormoravano di ciò, disse loro: «Questo vi scandalizza?

62 T hen what would you say if you saw the Son of Man going up where He was before?

E che sarebbe se vedeste il Figlio dell’uomo ascendere dov’era prima?

63 I t is the Spirit that gives life. The flesh is of no help. The words I speak to you are spirit and life.

È lo Spirito che vivifica; la carne non è di alcuna utilità; le parole che vi ho dette sono spirito e vita.

64 B ut some of you do not believe.” Jesus knew from the beginning who would not put their trust in Him. He knew who would hand Him over to the leaders of the country.

Ma tra di voi ci sono alcuni che non credono». Gesù sapeva infatti fin dal principio chi erano quelli che non credevano e chi era colui che lo avrebbe tradito.

65 H e said, “That is why I told you no one can come to Me unless the Father allows it.”

E diceva: «Per questo vi ho detto che nessuno può venire a me se non gli è dato dal Padre ».

66 F rom that time on, many of His followers turned back to their old ways of living. They would not go along with Him after that. Peter Knows Who Jesus Is

Da allora molti dei suoi discepoli si tirarono indietro e non andavano più con lui.

67 T hen Jesus said to the twelve followers, “Will you leave Me also?”

Perciò Gesù disse ai dodici: «Non volete andarvene anche voi?»

68 S imon Peter said to Him, “Lord, who else can we go to? You have words that give life that lasts forever.

Simon Pietro gli rispose: «Signore, da chi andremmo noi? Tu hai parole di vita eterna!

69 W e believe and know You are the Christ. You are the Son of the Living God.”

E noi abbiamo creduto e abbiamo conosciuto che tu sei il Santo di Dio ».

70 J esus said to them, “I chose you twelve as My followers. And one of you is a devil.”

Gesù rispose loro: «Non ho io scelto voi dodici? Eppure uno di voi è un diavolo!»

71 H e was speaking of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who was one of the twelve followers. He was ready to hand Jesus over to the leaders of the country.

Egli parlava di Giuda, figlio di Simone Iscariota, perché questi, uno dei dodici, stava per tradirlo.
