1 P raise the Lord! O give thanks to the Lord for He is good. His loving-kindness lasts forever.

Alleluia! Celebrate il Signore, perché egli è buono, perché la sua bontà dura in eterno.

2 W ho can put into words the great works of the Lord? Who can make known all His praise?

Chi può raccontare le gesta del Signore, o proclamare tutta la sua lode?

3 H appy are those who are faithful in being fair and who always do what is right and good!

Beati coloro che osservano ciò che è prescritto, che fanno ciò che è giusto, in ogni tempo!

4 O Lord, remember me when You show favor to Your people. Visit me also when You save them.

O Signore, ricòrdati di me quando usi benevolenza verso il tuo popolo; visitami quando lo salverai,

5 S o I may share in the well-being of Your chosen ones. So I may share in the joy of Your nation, and be proud of Your people.

perché io veda la felicità dei tuoi eletti, mi rallegri della gioia della tua nazione ed esulti con la tua eredità.

6 W e have sinned like our fathers. We have done wrong. We have been sinful in our actions.

Noi e i nostri padri abbiamo peccato, abbiamo mancato, abbiamo fatto il male.

7 O ur fathers in Egypt did not understand Your powerful works. They did not remember how many times You showed Your loving-kindness. But they turned against You by the sea, the Red Sea.

I nostri padri in Egitto non compresero i tuoi prodigi; non ricordarono le tue numerose benedizioni e si ribellarono presso il mare, il mar Rosso.

8 Y et He saved them because of the honor of His name, and to make His great power known.

Ma egli li salvò per amore del suo nome, per far conoscere la sua potenza.

9 S o He spoke sharp words to the Red Sea and it dried up. And He led them through the sea as through a desert.

Sgridò il mar Rosso ed esso si prosciugò; li guidò attraverso gli abissi marini come attraverso un deserto.

10 H e saved them from the hand of those who hated them. He set them free from the hand of those who went against them.

Li salvò dalla mano di chi li odiava e li riscattò dalla mano del nemico.

11 A nd the waters covered those who hated them. Not one of them was left.

Le acque ricoprirono i loro avversari; non ne scampò neppure uno.

12 T hen they believed His promises. They sang His praise.

Allora credettero alle sue parole e cantarono la sua lode.

13 B ut they soon forgot His works. They did not wait to hear what He wanted them to do.

Ben presto però dimenticarono le sue opere; non aspettarono fiduciosi l’adempimento del suo piano,

14 T hey wanted many things in the desert, and they tempted God there.

ma nel deserto furono presi da cupidigia e tentarono Dio nella solitudine.

15 S o He gave them what they wanted, but He allowed their souls to become weak because of it.

Ed egli diede loro quanto chiedevano, ma provocò in loro un morbo consumante.

16 T hey were jealous of Moses in the place where they set up their tents. And they were jealous of Aaron, the holy one of the Lord.

Divennero invidiosi di Mosè nell’accampamento, e di Aaronne, il santo del Signore.

17 S o the earth opened up and swallowed Dathan. It closed over the group of Abiram.

La terra si aprì, inghiottì Datan e seppellì il gruppo di Abiram.

18 A nd a fire came among their followers. It burned up the sinful people.

Un fuoco divampò nella loro assemblea, la fiamma consumò gli empi.

19 T hey made a calf at Horeb and worshiped a god of gold.

Fecero un vitello in Oreb e adorarono un’immagine di metallo fuso;

20 T hey traded their shining-greatness for something that looked like a bull that eats grass.

così sostituirono la gloria di Dio con la figura di un bue che mangia l’erba.

21 T hey forgot the God Who saved them, Who had done great things in Egypt,

Dimenticarono Dio, loro salvatore, che aveva fatto cose grandi in Egitto,

22 p owerful works in the land of Ham, and works that brought fear by the Red Sea.

cose meravigliose nel paese di Cam, cose tremende sul mar Rosso.

23 S o He said that He would destroy them. But Moses, His chosen one, stood in the way to keep His anger from destroying them.

Egli parlò di sterminarli; tuttavia Mosè, suo eletto, stette sulla breccia davanti a lui per impedire all’ira sua di distruggerli.

24 T hen they hated the good land. They did not believe in His Word.

Disprezzarono il paese delizioso, non credettero alla sua parola;

25 B ut they complained in their tents. They did not listen to the voice of the Lord.

mormorarono sotto le loro tende e non ascoltarono la voce del Signore.

26 S o He swore to them that He would let them die in the desert.

Perciò, egli alzò la mano su di loro giurando di abbatterli nel deserto,

27 A nd He would spread out their children among the nations and divide them over all the earth.

di far perire i loro discendenti fra le nazioni e di disperderli per tutti i paesi.

28 T hey joined themselves to Baal of Peor and ate gifts given to the dead.

Si misero sotto il giogo di Baal-Peor e mangiarono i sacrifici dei morti.

29 T hey made the Lord angry by their actions and a sickness broke out among them.

Irritarono Dio con le loro azioni e una pestilenza scoppiò tra loro.

30 T hen Phinehas stood up and came between them, and the sickness was stopped.

Ma Fineas si alzò, fece giustizia e il flagello cessò.

31 A nd this made him right with God to all people forever.

E ciò gli fu messo in conto come giustizia di generazione in generazione, per sempre.

32 T hey also made the Lord angry at the waters of Meribah. And trouble came to Moses because of them.

Lo provocarono presso le acque di Meriba e ne venne del male a Mosè per causa loro;

33 H e spoke from his lips without thinking because they went against the Spirit of God.

perché inasprirono il suo spirito ed egli parlò senza riflettere.

34 T hey did not destroy the people as the Lord told them to do.

Essi non distrussero i popoli, come il Signore aveva loro comandato;

35 B ut they mixed with the nations and learned their ways.

ma si mescolarono con le nazioni e impararono le loro opere.

36 T hey served their gods, which became a trap to them.

Servirono i loro idoli, che divennero un laccio per essi;

37 T hey even gave their sons and daughters as gifts on an altar to the demons.

sacrificarono i propri figli e le proprie figlie ai demòni,

38 T hey poured out the blood of those who were not guilty, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they gave on an altar to the gods of Canaan. And the land was poisoned with blood.

e sparsero il sangue innocente, il sangue dei propri figli e delle proprie figlie, che sacrificarono agli idoli di Canaan; e il paese fu profanato dal sangue versato.

39 T hey made themselves unclean by what they did. They were not true to God in what they did.

Essi si contaminarono con le loro opere e si prostituirono con i loro atti.

40 S o the Lord was angry with His people. He hated His people.

L’ira del Signore si accese contro il suo popolo ed egli prese in abominio la sua eredità.

41 S o He handed them over to the nations. And those who hated them ruled over them.

Li diede nelle mani delle nazioni e furono dominati da quanti li odiavano.

42 T hose who hated them held a strong power over them. And they were made to obey them.

I loro nemici li oppressero e furono umiliati sotto la loro mano.

43 G od set them free many times. But they always turned against Him and went deeper into sin.

Molte volte li liberò, ma essi si ostinavano a ribellarsi e si rovinavano per la loro iniquità.

44 B ut He looked upon their trouble when He heard their cry.

Tuttavia, volse a loro lo sguardo quando furono in angoscia, quando udì il loro grido;

45 H e remembered His agreement because of them, and took pity on them by the greatness of His loving-kindness.

si ricordò del suo patto con loro e nella sua grande misericordia si pentì.

46 T hose who held them also saw how God took pity on them.

Fece sì che avessero compassione di loro tutti quelli che li avevano deportati.

47 O Lord our God, save us! Gather us from among the nations. And we will give thanks to Your holy name and find honor in Your praise.

Salvaci, o Signore, Dio nostro, e raccoglici di tra le nazioni, perché celebriamo il tuo santo nome e troviamo la nostra gloria nel lodarti.

48 H onor and thanks be to the Lord, the God of Israel, forever and ever. Let all the people say, “Let it be so!” Praise the Lord!

Benedetto sia il Signore, il Dio d’Israele, d’eternità in eternità! E tutto il popolo dica: «Amen!» Alleluia.
