1 J acob went on his way, and God’s angels met him.

Cuando Jacob siguió su camino, los ángeles de Dios le salieron al encuentro.

2 W hen Jacob saw them, he said, “This is God’s camp!” So he gave the place the name Mahanaim.

Y al verlos, Jacob dijo: “Este es el campamento de Dios.” Por eso le puso a aquel lugar el nombre de Mahanaim (Dos Campamentos).

3 J acob sent men to carry news before him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

Entonces Jacob envió mensajeros delante de sí a su hermano Esaú, a la tierra de Seir, región de Edom.

4 H e told them, “Say this to my lord Esau: ‘Your servant Jacob says, “I have been living with Laban, and stayed there until now.

Y les dio órdenes, diciendo: “Así dirán a mi señor Esaú: ‘Así dice su siervo Jacob: “He morado con Labán, y allí me he quedado hasta ahora.

5 I have cattle and donkeys and flocks and men and women servants. And I have sent to tell my lord, hoping to find favor in your eyes.’”

Tengo bueyes, asnos y rebaños, siervos y siervas; y envío a avisar a mi señor, para hallar gracia ante sus ojos.”’”

6 T he men that carried the news returned to Jacob and said, “We came to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”

Los mensajeros regresaron a Jacob, diciendo: “Fuimos a su hermano Esaú, y él también viene a su encuentro, y 400 hombres con él.”

7 T hen Jacob was afraid and troubled. And he divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and cattle and camels, into two groups.

Jacob tuvo mucho temor y se angustió. Dividió en dos campamentos la gente que estaba con él, y las ovejas, las vacas y los camellos,

8 F or he said, “If Esau comes to the one group and destroys it, then the other group will get away.”

y dijo: “Si Esaú viene a un campamento y lo ataca, el campamento que queda escapará.”

9 T hen Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O Lord, Who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to those of your family, and I will bring good to you.’

Entonces Jacob dijo: “Oh Dios de mi padre Abraham y Dios de mi padre Isaac, oh Señor, que me dijiste: ‘Vuelve a tu tierra y a tus familiares, y Yo te haré prosperar.’

10 I have not earned any of the loving-kindness and faith which You have shown to your servant. For I had crossed this Jordan with only my walking stick. And now I have become two large groups.

Indigno soy de toda misericordia y de toda la fidelidad que has mostrado a Tu siervo. Porque con sólo mi cayado crucé este Jordán, y ahora he llegado a tener dos campamentos.

11 S ave me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the power of Esau. For I am afraid of him. I am afraid he will come and kill us all, the mothers with the children.

Líbrame, Te ruego, de la mano de mi hermano, de la mano de Esaú, porque yo le tengo miedo, no sea que venga y me hiera a mí y a las madres con los hijos.

12 B ut You said, ‘I will bring good to you. I will make your children like the sand of the sea. There will be too many to number.’”

Porque Tú me dijiste: ‘De cierto te haré prosperar, y haré tu descendencia como la arena del mar que no se puede contar por su gran cantidad.’”

13 S o Jacob stayed there that night. Then he chose a gift from what he had for his brother Esau:

Jacob pasó la noche allí. Entonces de lo que tenía consigo escogió un presente para su hermano Esaú:

14 T wo hundred female goats, twenty male goats, two hundred female sheep, twenty rams,

doscientas cabras y veinte machos cabríos, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros,

15 t hirty milk camels and their young ones, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.

treinta camellas criando con sus crías, cuarenta vacas y diez novillos, veinte asnas y diez asnos.

16 H e put them into the care of his servants, every group of animals by itself. Then he said to his servants, “Go in front of me. And keep the groups of animals apart.”

Jacob los entregó a sus siervos, cada manada aparte, y dijo a sus siervos: “Pasen delante de mí, y pongan un buen espacio entre manada y manada.”

17 H e told the one in front, “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and who owns these animals in front of you?’

Y ordenó al primero: “Cuando mi hermano Esaú te encuentre y te pregunte: ‘¿De quién eres y adónde vas, y de quién son estos animales que van delante de ti?’

18 t hen you say, ‘These belong to your servant Jacob. It is a gift sent to my lord Esau. And he is coming behind us.’”

entonces responderás: ‘Son de su siervo Jacob. Es un presente enviado a mi señor Esaú. Mire, él también viene detrás de nosotros.’”

19 H e also told the second and the third and all those who followed the animals, “This is what you are to say to Esau when you meet him.

También dio órdenes al segundo y al tercero, y a todos los que iban tras las manadas, diciendo: “De esta manera hablarán a Esaú cuando lo encuentren,

20 A nd be sure to say, ‘Your servant Jacob is coming behind us.’” For he said, “I will take away his anger with the gift that goes in front of me. Then when I meet him, he might receive me.”

y dirán: ‘Mire, su siervo Jacob también viene detrás de nosotros.’” Pues dijo: “Lo apaciguaré con el presente que va delante de mí. Y después veré su rostro; quizá me acepte.”

21 S o the gift went in front of him, while he stayed that night in the tent. Jacob’s Name Is Changed to Israel

El presente pasó, pues, delante de él, y Jacob durmió aquella noche en el campamento. Jacob Lucha con el Angel de Dios

22 B ut he got up that same night and crossed the Jabbok River, with his two wives, the two women who served him, and his eleven children.

Aquella misma noche Jacob se levantó, y tomó a sus dos mujeres, a sus dos siervas y a sus once hijos, y cruzó el vado de Jaboc.

23 H e took them and sent them to the other side of the river with all that he had.

Después que los tomó y los hizo pasar el arroyo, hizo pasar también todo lo que tenía.

24 T hen Jacob was left alone. And a man fought with him until morning.

Jacob se quedó solo, y un hombre luchó con él hasta rayar el alba.

25 W hen the man saw that he was not winning he touched the joint of Jacob’s thigh. And Jacob’s thigh was put out of joint while he fought with him.

Cuando vio que no podía prevalecer contra Jacob, lo tocó en la coyuntura del muslo, y se dislocó la coyuntura del muslo de Jacob mientras luchaba con él.

26 T he man said, “Let me go. For the morning has come.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you pray that good will come to me.”

Entonces el hombre dijo: “Suéltame porque raya el alba.” “No te soltaré si no me bendices,” le respondió Jacob.

27 T he man asked him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.”

“¿Cómo te llamas?” le preguntó el hombre. “Jacob,” le respondió él.

28 A nd the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel. For you have fought with God and with men, and have won.”

Y el hombre dijo: “Tu nombre ya no será Jacob, sino Israel (El que lucha con Dios), porque has luchado con Dios y con los hombres, y has prevalecido.”

29 T hen Jacob asked him, “Tell me, what is your name?” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he prayed that good would come to Jacob.

Entonces Jacob le dijo: “Dame a conocer ahora tu nombre.” “¿Para qué preguntas por mi nombre ?” le respondió el hombre. Y lo bendijo allí.

30 S o Jacob gave the place the name of Peniel. For he said, “I have seen God face to face, and yet I am still alive.”

Y Jacob le puso a aquel lugar el nombre de Peniel (El rostro de Dios), porque dijo: “He visto a Dios cara a cara, y ha sido preservada mi vida.”

31 T he sun rose upon him as he passed through Peniel. It was hard to walk on his leg.

El sol salía cuando Jacob cruzaba Peniel, y cojeaba de su muslo.

32 S o to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the meat from inside the joint of the thigh, because he touched this part of the joint on Jacob’s leg.

Por eso, hasta hoy, los Israelitas no comen el tendón de la cadera que está en la coyuntura del muslo, porque el hombre tocó la coyuntura del muslo de Jacob en el tendón de la cadera.
