1 D ead flies cause the oil of the perfumer to produce an evil odor; so does a little folly outweigh wisdom and honor.

5 T here is an evil which I have seen under the sun, the sort of error which proceeds from the ruler.

Есть еще одно зло, которое я видел под солнцем, ошибку, которую совершает властитель:

6 F olly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in a low place.

глупых ставят на многие высокие посты, а богатые занимают низкие.

7 I have seen servants on horses, and princes walking like servants on the earth.

Видел я, как рабы ездили на лошадях, а начальники шли пешком, подобно рабам.

8 H e who digs a pit may fall into it; and whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.

Кто копает яму, тот может упасть в нее, и кто разрушает стену, того может ужалить змея.

9 W hoever carves out stones may be injured by them. Whoever splits wood may be endangered thereby.

Кто работает на каменоломне, тот может покалечиться, и кто колет дрова, тот подвергает себя опасности.

10 I f the ax is blunt, and one doesn’t sharpen the edge, then he must use more strength; but skill brings success.

Если топор тупой, и лезвие его не отточено, то нужно будет прилагать большое усилие, а мудрость бы все предусмотрела.

11 I f the snake bites before it is charmed, then is there no profit for the charmer’s tongue.

Нет пользы заклинателю от его искусства, если змея ужалит его до заклинания.

12 T he words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but a fool is swallowed by his own lips.

Благодатны слова из уст мудрого, а уста глупого губят его самого.

13 T he beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

Начало его речи – глупость, а конец ее – злое безумие.

14 A fool also multiplies words. Man doesn’t know what will be; and that which will be after him, who can tell him?

Глупый говорит много, хотя человек не знает будущего, и кто может сказать ему, что будет после него?

15 T he labor of fools wearies every one of them; for he doesn’t know how to go to the city.

Труд утомляет глупого, который даже не знает, как добраться до города.

16 W oe to you, land, when your king is a child, and your princes eat in the morning!

Горе тебе, страна, чей царь – еще ребенок, и чьи вельможи пируют уже с утра.

17 H appy are you, land, when your king is the son of nobles, and your princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

Благо тебе, страна, чей царь из знатного рода, и чьи вельможи едят и пьют в нужное время – для подкрепления, а не для пьянства.

18 B y slothfulness the roof sinks in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaks.

Если человек ленив, то в доме его прогнется потолок, и если руки его праздны, то протечет крыша.

19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine makes the life glad; and money is the answer for all things.

Пиры устраиваются для удовольствия, и вино веселит жизнь, а деньги обеспечивают и то, и другое.

20 D on’t curse the king, no, not in your thoughts; and don’t curse the rich in your bedroom: for a bird of the sky may carry your voice, and that which has wings may tell the matter.

Даже в мыслях своих не злословь царя, и в своей спальне не говори плохо о богатом, потому что птица небесная может перенести твои слова, крылатая может передать, что ты сказал.
