When you sit down to eat with a ruler, think about what is in front of you.

3 N ão cobices os seus manjares gostosos, porque é comida enganadora.

Do not desire his special foods, for they are put there for no good reason.

4 N ão te fatigues para seres rico; dá de mão ã tua própria sabedoria:

Do not work hard to be rich. Stop trying to get things for yourself.

5 F itando tu os olhos nas riquezas, elas se vão; pois fazem para si asas, como a águia, voam para o céu.

When you set your eyes upon it, it is gone. For sure, riches make themselves wings like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.

6 N ão comas o pão do avarento, nem cobices os seus manjares gostosos.

Do not eat the bread of a man who thinks only about himself. Do not have a desire for his fine food.

7 P orque, como ele pensa consigo mesmo, assim é; ele te diz: Come e bebe; mas o seu coração não está contigo.

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. He says to you, “Eat and drink!” But his heart is not with you.

8 V omitarás o bocado que comeste, e perderás as tuas suaves palavras.

You will spit up the piece of food you have eaten, and waste your good words.

9 N ão fales aos ouvidos do tolo; porque desprezará a sabedoria das tuas palavras.

Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will hate the wisdom of your words.

10 N ão removas os limites antigos; nem entres nos campos dos órfãos,

Do not take away the old land-mark, or go into the fields of those without a father.

11 p orque o seu redentor é forte; ele lhes pleiteará a causa contra ti.

For the One Who saves them is strong. He will stand by them and give them help against you.

12 A plica o teu coração ã instrução, e os teus ouvidos

Open your heart to teaching, and your ears to words of much learning.

13 N ão retires da criança a disciplina; porque, fustigando-a tu com a vara, nem por isso morrerá.

Do not keep from punishing the child if he needs it. If you beat him with the stick, he will not die.

14 T u a fustigarás com a vara e livrarás a sua alma do Seol.

Beat him with the stick, and save his soul from hell.

15 F ilho meu, se o teu coração for sábio, alegrar-se-á o meu coração, sim, ó, meu próprio;

My son, if your heart is wise, my own heart will be glad also.

16 e exultará o meu coração, quando os teus lábios falarem coisas retas.

My heart will be full of joy when your lips speak what is right.

17 N ão tenhas inveja dos pecadores; antes conserva-te no temor do Senhor todo o dia.

Do not let your heart be jealous of sinners, but live in the fear of the Lord always.

18 P orque deveras terás uma recompensa; não será malograda a tua esperança.

For sure there is a future and your hope will not be cut off.

19 O uve tu, filho meu, e sê sábio; e dirige no caminho o teu coração.

Listen, my son, and be wise. Lead your heart in the way.

20 N ão estejas entre os beberrões de vinho, nem entre os comilões de carne.

Do not be with those who drink too much wine or eat too much meat.

21 P orque o beberrão e o comilão caem em pobreza; e a sonolência cobrirá de trapos o homem.

For the man who drinks too much or eats too much will become poor, and much sleep will dress a man in torn clothes.

22 O uve a teu pai, que te gerou; e não desprezes a tua mãe, quando ela envelhecer.

Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not hate your mother when she is old.

23 C ompra a verdade, e não a vendas; sim, a sabedoria, a disciplina, e o entendimento.

Buy truth, and do not sell it. Get wisdom and teaching and understanding.

24 G randemente se regozijará o pai do justo; e quem gerar um filho sábio, nele se alegrará.

The father of one who is right with God will have much joy. He who has a wise son will be glad in him.

25 A legrem-se teu pai e tua mãe, e regozije-se aquela que te deu ã luz.

Let your father and mother be glad, and let her who gave birth to you be full of joy.

26 F ilho meu, dá-me o teu coração; e deleitem-se os teus olhos nos meus caminhos.

Give me your heart, my son. Let your eyes find joy in my ways.

27 P orque cova profunda é a prostituta; e poço estreito é a aventureira.

For a woman who sells the use of her body is like a deep hole. A sinful woman is a narrow well.

28 T ambém ela, como o salteador, se põe a espreitar; e multiplica entre os homens os prevaricadores.

She lies in wait as a robber, and makes many more men not faithful.

29 P ara quem são os ais? para quem os pesares? para quem as pelejas, para quem as queixas? para quem as feridas sem causa? e para quem os olhos vermelhos?

Who has trouble? Who has sorrow? Who is fighting? Who is complaining? Who is hurt without a reason? Who has eyes that have become red?

30 P ara os que se demoram perto do vinho, para os que andam buscando bebida misturada.

Those who stay a long time over wine. Those who go to taste mixed wine.

31 N ão olhes para o vinho quando se mostra vermelho, quando resplandece no copo e se escoa suavemente.

Do not look at wine when it is red, when it shines in the cup, when it is smooth in going down.

32 N o seu fim morderá como a cobra, e como o basilisco picará.

In the end it bites like a snake. It stings like the bite of a snake with poison.

33 O s teus olhos verão coisas estranhas, e tu falarás perversidades.

Your eyes will see strange things. Your mind will say the wrong things.

34 o serás como o que se deita no meio do mar, e como o que dorme no topo do mastro.

And you will be like one who lies down in the center of the sea, or like one who lies above a ship’s sail.
