3 N u pofti mîncările lui alese, căci sînt o hrană înşelătoare.

4 N u te chinui ca să te îmbogăţeşti, nu-ţi pune priceperea în aceasta.

Do not work hard to be rich. Stop trying to get things for yourself.

5 A bia ţi-ai aruncat ochii spre ea şi nu mai este; căci bogăţia îşi face aripi, şi, ca vulturul, îşi ia sborul spre ceruri.

When you set your eyes upon it, it is gone. For sure, riches make themselves wings like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.

6 N u mînca pînea celui pismaş, şi nu pofti mîncările lui alese,

Do not eat the bread of a man who thinks only about himself. Do not have a desire for his fine food.

7 c ăci el este ca unul care îşi face socotelile în suflet.,, Mănîncă şi bea``, îţi va zice el; dar inima lui nu este cu tine.

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. He says to you, “Eat and drink!” But his heart is not with you.

8 B ucata pe care ai mîncat -o, o vei vărsa, şi cuvintele plăcute pe cari le vei spune, sînt perdute.

You will spit up the piece of food you have eaten, and waste your good words.

9 N u vorbi la urechea celui nebun, căci el nesocoteşte cuvintele tale înţelepte.

Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will hate the wisdom of your words.

10 N u muta hotarul văduvei, şi nu intra în ogorul orfanilor,

Do not take away the old land-mark, or go into the fields of those without a father.

11 c ăci răzbunătorul lor este puternic: El le va apăra pricina împotriva ta.

For the One Who saves them is strong. He will stand by them and give them help against you.

12 D eschide-ţi inima la învăţătură, şi urechile la cuvintele ştiinţei.

Open your heart to teaching, and your ears to words of much learning.

13 N u cruţa copilul de mustrare, căci dacă -l vei lovi cu nuiaua, nu va muri.

Do not keep from punishing the child if he needs it. If you beat him with the stick, he will not die.

14 L ovindu -l cu nuiaua, îi scoţi sufletul din locuinţa morţilor.

Beat him with the stick, and save his soul from hell.

15 F iule, dacă-ţi va fi inima înţeleaptă, inima mea se va bucura;

My son, if your heart is wise, my own heart will be glad also.

16 ş i lăuntrul meu se va veseli, cînd buzele tale vor spune ce este bine.

My heart will be full of joy when your lips speak what is right.

17 S ă nu-ţi pizmuiască inima pe cei păcătoşi, ci să aibă totdeauna frică de Domnul;

Do not let your heart be jealous of sinners, but live in the fear of the Lord always.

18 c ăci este o răsplată, şi nu ţi se va tăia nădejdea.

For sure there is a future and your hope will not be cut off.

19 A scultă, fiule, şi fii înţelept; îndreaptă-ţi inima pe calea cea dreaptă.

Listen, my son, and be wise. Lead your heart in the way.

20 N u fi printre ceice beau vin, nici printre ceice se îmbuibează cu carne.

Do not be with those who drink too much wine or eat too much meat.

21 C ăci beţivul şi cel ce se dedă la îmbuibare sărăcesc, şi aţipirea te face să porţi zdrenţe.

For the man who drinks too much or eats too much will become poor, and much sleep will dress a man in torn clothes.

22 A sculă pe tatăl tău, care te -a născut, şi nu nesocoti pe mamă-ta, cînd a îmbătrînit.

Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not hate your mother when she is old.

23 C umpără adevărul, şi nu -l vinde, înţelepciunea, învăţătura şi priceperea.

Buy truth, and do not sell it. Get wisdom and teaching and understanding.

24 T atăl celui neprihănit se veseleşte, şi cel ce dă naştere unui înţelept se bucură.

The father of one who is right with God will have much joy. He who has a wise son will be glad in him.

25 S ă se bucure tatăl tău şi mama ta, să se veselească cea care te -a născut.

Let your father and mother be glad, and let her who gave birth to you be full of joy.

26 F iule, dă-mi inima ta, şi să găsească plăcere ochii tăi în căile Mele.

Give me your heart, my son. Let your eyes find joy in my ways.

27 C ăci curva este o groapă adîncă, şi străina o fîntînă strîmtă.

For a woman who sells the use of her body is like a deep hole. A sinful woman is a narrow well.

28 E a pîndeşte ca un hoţ, şi măreşte între oameni numărul celor stricaţi.

She lies in wait as a robber, and makes many more men not faithful.

29 A le cui sînt vaietele? Ale cui sînt oftările? Ale cui sînt neînţelegerile? Ale cui sînt plîngerile? Ale cui sînt rănirile fără pricină? Ai cui sînt ochii roşi?

Who has trouble? Who has sorrow? Who is fighting? Who is complaining? Who is hurt without a reason? Who has eyes that have become red?

30 A le celor ce întîrzie la vin, şi se duc să golească paharul cu vin amestecat.

Those who stay a long time over wine. Those who go to taste mixed wine.

31 N u te uita la vin cînd curge roş şi face mărgăritare în pahar; el alunecă uşor,

Do not look at wine when it is red, when it shines in the cup, when it is smooth in going down.

32 d ar pe urmă ca un şarpe muşcă şi înţeapă ca un basilisc.

In the end it bites like a snake. It stings like the bite of a snake with poison.

33 O chii ţi se vor uita după femeile altora, şi inima îţi va vorbi prostii.

Your eyes will see strange things. Your mind will say the wrong things.

34 V ei fi ca un om culcat în mijlocul mării, ca un om culcat pe vîrful unui catarg.

And you will be like one who lies down in the center of the sea, or like one who lies above a ship’s sail.

35 M 'a lovit... dar nu mă doare!... M'a bătut... dar nu simt nimic! Cînd... mă voi trezi? Mai vreau vin!``
