1 F raţilor, nu vreau să nu ştiţi că părinţii noştri toţi au fost supt nor, toţi au trecut prin mare,

Christian brothers, I want you to know what happened to our early fathers. They all walked from the country of Egypt under the cloud that showed them the way, and they all passed through the waters of the Red Sea.

2 t oţi au fost botezaţi în nor şi în mare, pentru Moise;

They were all baptized as they followed Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

3 t oţi au mîncat aceeaş mîncare duhovnicească,

All of them ate the same holy food.

4 ş i toţi au băut aceeaş băutură duhovnicească, pentrucă beau dintr'o stîncă duhovnicească ce venea după ei; şi stînca era Hristos.

They all drank the same holy drink. They drank from a holy Rock that went along with them. That holy Rock was Christ.

5 T otuş cei mai mulţi dintre ei, n'au fost plăcuţi lui Dumnezeu, căci au pierit în pustie.

Even then most of them did not please God. He destroyed them in the desert.

6 Ş i aceste lucruri s'au întîmplat ca să ne slujească nouă drept pilde, pentruca să nu poftim după lucruri rele, cum au poftit ei.

These things show us something. They teach us not to want things that are bad for us like those people did.

7 S ă nu fiţi închinători la idoli, ca unii dintre ei, după cum este scris:,, Poporul a şezut să mănînce şi să bea; şi s'au sculat să joace.``

We must not worship false gods as some of them did. The Holy Writings tell us, “The people sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up to play.”

8 S ă nu curvim, cum au făcut unii din ei, aşa că într -o singură zi au căzut douăzeci şi trei de mii.

We must not do sex sins as some of them did. In one day 23, 000 died.

9 S ă nu ispitim pe Domnul, cum L-au ispitit unii din ei, cari au pierit prin şerpi.

We must not test the Lord as some of them did. They were destroyed by snakes.

10 S ă nu cîrtiţi, cum au cîrtit unii din ei, cari au fost nimiciţi de Nimicitorul.

We must not complain against God as some of them did. That is why they were destroyed.

11 A ceste lucruri li s'au întîmplat ca să ne slujească drept pilde, şi au fost scrise pentru învăţătura noastră, peste cari au venit sfîrşiturile veacurilor.

All these things happened to show us something. They were written to teach us that the end of the world is near.

12 A stfel dar, cine crede că stă în picioare, să ia seama să nu cadă.

So watch yourself! The person who thinks he can stand against sin had better watch that he does not fall into sin.

13 N u v'a ajuns nici o ispită, care să nu fi fost potrivită cu puterea omenească. Şi Dumnezeu, care este credincios, nu va îngădui să fiţi ispitiţi peste puterile voastre; ci, împreună cu ispita, a pregătit şi mijlocul să ieşiţi din ea, ca s'o puteţi răbda.

You have never been tempted to sin in any different way than other people. God is faithful. He will not allow you to be tempted more than you can take. But when you are tempted, He will make a way for you to keep from falling into sin. Teaching About the Lord’s Supper

14 D e aceea, prea iubiţii mei, fugiţi de închinarea la idoli.

My dear friends, keep away from the worship of false gods.

15 V ă vorbesc ca unor oameni cu judecată: judecaţi voi singuri ce spun.

I am speaking to you who are able to understand. See if what I am saying is true.

16 P aharul binecuvîntat, pe care -l binecuvîntăm, nu este el împărtăşirea cu sîngele lui Hristos? Pînea, pe care o frîngem, nu este ea împărtăşirea cu trupul lui Hristos?

When we give thanks for the fruit of the vine at the Lord’s supper, are we not sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread we eat at the Lord’s supper, are we not sharing in the body of Christ?

17 A vînd în vedere că este o pîne, noi, cari sîntem mulţi, sîntem un trup; căci toţi luăm o parte din aceeaş pîne.

There is one bread, and many of us Christians make up the body of Christ. All of us eat from that bread.

18 U itaţi-vă la Israelul după trup: cei ce mănîncă jertfele, nu sînt ei în împărtăşire cu altarul?

Look at the Jews. They ate the animals that were brought to God as gifts in worship and put on the altar. Did this not show they were sharing with God?

19 D eci ce zic eu? Că un lucru jertfit idolilor, este ceva? Sau că un idol este ceva?

What do I mean? Am I saying that a false god or the food brought to it in worship is worth anything?

20 D impotrivă, eu zic că ce jerfesc Neamurile, jertfesc dracilor, şi nu lui Dumnezeu. Şi eu nu vreau ca voi să fiţi în împărtăşire cu dracii.

No, not at all! I am saying that the people who do not know God bring gifts of animals in worship. But they have given them to demons, not to God. You do not want to have any share with demons.

21 N u puteţi bea paharul Domnului şi paharul dracilor; nu puteţi lua parte la masa Domnului şi la masa dracilor.

You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons. You cannot eat at the Lord’s table and at the demon’s table.

22 S au vrem să întărîtăm pe Domnul la gelozie? Sîntem noi mai tari decît El?

Are we trying to make the Lord jealous? Do we think we are stronger than the Lord?

23 T oate lucrurile sînt îngăduite, dar nu toate sînt de folos. Toate lucrurile sînt îngăduite, dar nu toate zidesc.

We are allowed to do anything, but not everything is good for us to do. We are allowed to do anything, but not all things help us grow strong as Christians.

24 N imeni să nu-şi caute folosul lui, ci fiecare să caute folosul altuia.

Do not work only for your own good. Think of what you can do for others.

25 S ă mîncaţi din tot ce se vinde pe piaţă, fără să cercetaţi ceva din pricina cugetului.

Eat any meat that is sold in the stores. Ask no questions about it. Then your heart will not say it is wrong.

26 C ăci,, al Domnului este pămîntul şi tot ce cuprinde el.``

The Holy Writings say, “The earth and everything in it belongs to the Lord.”

27 D acă vă pofteşte un necredincios la o masă, şi voiţi să vă duceţi, să mîncaţi din tot ce vă pune înainte, fără să cercetaţi ceva din pricina cugetului.

If a person who is not a Christian wants you to eat with him, and you want to go, eat anything that is on the table. Ask no questions about the food. Then your heart will not say it is wrong.

28 D ar dacă vă spune cineva:,, Lucrul acesta a fost jertfit idolilor``, să nu mîncaţi, din pricina celui ce v'a înştiinţat şi din pricina cugetului; căci,, al Domnului este pămîntul şi tot ce cuprinde el.``

But if someone says, “This meat has been given as a gift to false gods in worship,” do not eat it. In that way, it will not hurt the faith of the one who told you and his heart will have peace.

29 V orbesc aici nu de cugetul vostru, ci de cugetul altuia. Căci dece să fie judecată slobozenia mea de cugetul altuia?

How the other person feels is important. We are not free to do things that will hurt another person.

30 D acă mănînc, aducînd mulţămiri, de ce să fiu vorbit de rău pentru un lucru, pentru care mulţămesc?

If I can give thanks to God for my food, why should anyone say that I am wrong about eating food I can give thanks for?

31 D eci, fie că mîncaţi, fie că beţi, fie că faceţi altceva: să faceţi totul pentru slava lui Dumnezeu.

So if you eat or drink or whatever you do, do everything to honor God.

32 S ă nu fiţi pricină de păcătuire nici pentru Iudei, nici pentru Greci, nici pentru Biserica lui Dumnezeu.

Do nothing that would make trouble for a Greek or for a Jew or for the church of God.

33 D upă cum mă silesc şi eu în toate lucrurile să plac tuturor, căutînd nu folosul meu, ci al celor mai mulţi, ca să fie mîntuiţi.

I want to please everyone in all that I do. I am not thinking of myself. I want to do what is best for them so they may be saved from the punishment of sin.
