1 C înd a auzit împăratul Ezechia cuvintele acestea, şi -a sfîşiat hainele, s'a acoperit cu un sac, şi s'a dus în Casa Domnului.

When King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes. He covered himself with cloth made from hair, and went into the house of the Lord.

2 A trimes pe Eliachim, căpetenia casei împăratului, pe Şebna, logofătul, şi pe cei mai bătrîni dintre preoţi, acoperiţi cu saci, la proorocul Isaia, fiul lui Amoţ.

Then he sent Eliakim, the head of the house, and Shebna the writer, and the head religious leaders, covered with cloth made from hair, to Isaiah the man of God, the son of Amoz.

3 Ş i i-au zis:,, Aşa vorbeşte Ezechia:, Ziua aceasta este o zi de necaz, de pedeapsă şi de ocară; căci copiii sînt aproape să iasă din pîntecele mamei lor, şi totuş mamele n'au putere să nască.

They said to him, “Hezekiah says, ‘This day is a day of trouble, pain, and shame. For children have come to birth, and there is no strength for them to be born.

4 P oate că Domnul Dumnezeul tău, a auzit cuvintele lui Rabşache, pe pe care l -a trimes împăratul Asiriei, stăpînul său, să batjocorească pe Dumnezeul cel viu, şi poate că Domnul Dumnezeul tău îl va pedepsi pentru cuvintele pe cari le -a auzit. Înalţă dar o rugăciune pentru rămăşiţa care a mai rămas.``

It may be that the Lord your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom his leader the king of Assyria has sent to try to bring shame upon the living God. The Lord your God may speak sharp words against what He has heard. So say a prayer for those who are left of His people.’”

5 S lujitorii împăratului Ezechia s'au dus deci la Isaia.

So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

6 Ş i Isaia le -a zis:,, Iată ce veţi spune stăpînului vostru:, Aşa vorbeşte Domnul:, Nu te spăimînta de cuvintele pe cari le-ai auzit şi prin cari M'au batjocorit slujitorii împăratului Asiriei.

And Isaiah said to them, “Tell your king, ‘This is what the Lord says. “Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have spoken against Me.

7 C ăci voi pune în el un duh de aşa fel încît, la o veste pe care o va primi, se va întoarce în ţara lui; şi -l voi face să cadă ucis de sabie în ţara lui.``

See, I will put a spirit in him so that he will hear some news and return to his own land. And I will make him fall by the sword in his own land.”’”

8 R abşache, la întoarcere, a găsit pe împăratul Asiriei luptînd împotriva Libnei, căci aflase de plecarea lui din Lachis.

Then Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah, for he had heard that the king had left Lachish.

9 A tunci împăratul Asiriei a primit o veste despre Tirhaca, împăratul Etiopiei, prin care i se spunea:,, El a pornit să-ţi facă război.`` Cum a auzit lucrul acesta, a trimes soli la Ezechia, zicîndu-le:

Now the king had heard them say about King Tirhakah of Cush, “He has come out to fight against you.” When he heard it, he sent men to Hezekiah, saying,

10 A şa să vorbiţi lui Ezechia, împăratul lui Iuda:, Nu te lăsa amăgit de Dumnezeul tău, în care te încrezi, şi zici:, Ierusalimul nu va fi dat în mînile împăratului Asiriei.`

“Tell Hezekiah king of Judah, ‘Do not let your God in Whom you trust fool you, saying, “Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”

11 C ăci ai auzit ce au făcut împăraţii Asiriei tuturor ţărilor, şi cum le-au nimicit cu desăvîrşire; şi tu, să fii izbăvit?

See, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the lands. They have destroyed them all. So will you be kept from trouble?

12 O are dumnezeii neamurilor, pe cari le-au nimicit părinţii mei, le-au izbăvit ei, şi anume: Gozanul, Haranul, Reţef, şi fiii lui Eden cari sînt la Telasar?

Did the gods of those nations which my fathers have destroyed take them out of trouble? Did they save Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the sons of Eden who were in Telassar?

13 U nde este împăratul Hamatului, împăratul Arpadului, şi împăratul cetăţii Sefarvaim, Hena şi Iva?``

Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, the king of Hena, or the king of Ivvah?’” Hezekiah’s Prayer

14 E zechia a luat scrisoarea din mîna solilor, şi a citit -o. Apoi s'a suit la Casa Domnului, a întins -o înaintea Domnului,

Then Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the men from Assyria, and read it. He went up to the house of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord.

15 ş i i -a făcut următoarea rugăciune:

And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord,

16 D oamne al oştirilor, Dumnezeul lui Israel, care şezi pe heruvimi! Tu eşti singurul Dumnezeu al tuturor împărăţiilor pămîntului! Tu ai făcut cerurile şi pămîntul!

“O Lord of All, the God of Israel, Who sits on the throne above the cherubim, You are the God, You alone, of all the nations of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.

17 D oamne, pleacă-Ţi urechea, şi ascultă! Doamne, deschide-Ţi ochii, şi priveşte! Auzi toate cuvintele pe cari le -a trimes Sanherib ca să batjocorească pe Dumnezeul cel viu!

Listen, O Lord, and hear. Open Your eyes, O Lord, and see. Listen to all the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to speak against the living God.

18 E ste adevărat, Doamne, că împăraţii Asiriei au pustiit toate ţările şi ţările lor;

It is true, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have destroyed all the nations and their lands.

19 ş i că au aruncat în foc pe dumnezeii lor; dar ei nu erau dumnezei, ci erau lucrări făcute de mînile omului, de lemn şi de piatră. De aceea i-au nimicit.

They have thrown their gods into the fire, for they were not gods but the work of men’s hands, made of wood and stone. So they have destroyed them.

20 A cum, Doamne, Dumnezeul nostru, izbăveşte-ne din mîna lui Sanherib, ca toate împărăţiile pămîntului să ştie că numai Tu, Doamne, eşti Dumnezeu!``

Now, O Lord our God, take us out of his hand, that all the nations of the earth may know that You alone are the Lord.” The Word of the Lord to the King

21 A tunci Isaia, fiul lui Amoţ, a trimes să spună lui Ezechia:,, Aşa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel:, Am auzit rugăciunea pe care Mi-ai făcut -o cu privire la Sanherib, împăratul Asiriei.

Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent word to Hezekiah, saying, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says, ‘Because you have prayed to Me about Sennacherib king of Assyria,

22 I ată cuvîntul pe care l -a rostit Domnul împotriva lui:, Fecioara, fiica Sionului, te dispreţuieşte şi îşi bate joc de tine; fata Ierusalimului dă din cap după tine.

this is the word the Lord has spoken against him: “She has hated you and made fun of you, the young daughter of Zion who has never had a man! She has shaken her head behind you, the people of Jerusalem!

23 P e cine ai batjocorit şi ai ocărît tu? Împotriva cui ţi-ai ridicat glasul, şi ţi-ai îndreptat ochii? Împotriva Sfîntului lui Israel;

Whom have you put to shame and spoken against? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted up your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!

24 p rin slujitorii tăi tu ai batjocorit pe Domnul, şi ai zis:, Cu mulţimea carălor mele, m'am suit pe vîrful munţilor, pe coastele Libanului, şi voi tăia cedrii lui cei mai înalţi, cei mai frumoşi chiparoşi ai lui, şi voi ajunge pe culmea cea mai înaltă, în pădurea lui care este ca un pomăt.

Through your servants you have spoken against the Lord. You have said, ‘I came up to the high mountains with my many war-wagons, to the farthest parts of Lebanon. I cut down its tall cedar trees and its best cypress trees. I came to its highest mountain top, and to the place that has the most trees.

25 A m săpat izvoare, şi am băut din apele lor, şi cu talpa picioarelor mele voi seca toate rîurile Egiptului.``

I dug wells in strange lands and drank water there. With the bottom of my feet I dried up all the rivers of Egypt.’

26 D ar n'ai auzit că am pregătit aceste lucruri de demult, şi că le-am hotărît din vremuri străvechi? Acum însă am dat voie să se împlinească, pentru ca să prefaci cetăţi tari în nişte mormane de dărîmături.

Have you not heard that I planned this long ago? From days of old I planned it. Now I have made it happen, that you should turn strong cities built for battles into waste lands.

27 Ş i locuitorii lor sînt neputincioşi, spăimîntaţi şi uluiţi: sînt ca iarba de pe cîmp şi verdeaţa fragedă, ca iarba de pe acoperişuri, şi ca grîul care se usucă înainte de a da în spic.

So their people did not have any more strength. They were troubled and put to shame. They were like the grass of the field and like the green plant. They were like grass on the housetops, dried up before it is grown.

28 D ar Eu ştiu cînd stai jos, cînd ieşi afară, cînd intri, şi cînd eşti mînios împotriva Mea.

But I know your sitting down, and your going out and your coming in, and your anger against Me.

29 D eci pentrucă eşti mînios împotriva Mea, şi mîndria ta a ajuns pînă la urechile Mele, voi pune veriga Mea în nările tale şi zăbala Mea între buzele tale, şi te voi face să te întorci pe drumul pe care ai venit.``

Because of your anger against Me, and because I have heard of your pride, I will put My hook in your nose, and My bit in your mouth. And I will make you return the way you came.

30 a cesta să-ţi fie semnul, Ezechia: anul acesta veţi mînca ce va creşte singur dela sine, şi în al doilea an ce va răsări din aceasta; dar în al treilea an, veţi sămăna, veţi secera, veţi sădi vii şi veţi mînca din rodul lor.

“This will be the special thing for you to see: You will eat this year what grows of itself. In the second year you will eat what grows up from the same. Then in the third year you will plant and gather. You will plant grape-fields and eat their fruit.

31 Ş i ce va mai scăpa din casa lui Iuda, şi ce va mai rămînea iarăş va prinde rădăcini de desupt, şi va aduce rod deasupra.

And those who are left of the family of Judah will again have their roots grow down and grow their fruit above.

32 C ăci din Ierusalim va ieşi o rămăşiţă, şi din muntele Sionului cei izbăviţi. Iată ce va face rîvna Domnului oştirilor.

For My people who are left will go out from Jerusalem and from Mount Zion. This will be done by the work of the Lord of All.”’”

33 D eaceea aşa vorbeşte Domnul despre împăratul Asiriei:, El nu va intra în cetatea aceasta, nu va arunca săgeţi în ea, nu -i va sta înainte cu scuturi, şi nu va ridica întărituri de şanţuri împotriva ei.

So the Lord says about the king of Assyria, ‘He will not come to this city or shoot an arrow there. He will not come before it with a battle-covering, or build a battle-wall against it.

34 C i se va întoarce pe drumul pe care a venit, şi nu va intra în cetatea aceasta, zice Domnul,

He will return by the same way he came, and he will not come to this city,’ says the Lord.

35 c ăci Eu voi ocroti cetatea aceasta ca s'o scap, din pricina Mea, şi din pricina robului Meu David!.``

‘For I will fight for this city to save it for My own good, and for the good of My servant David.’”

36 Î ngerul Domnului a ieşit, şi a ucis în tabăra Asirienilor o sută optzeci şi cinci de mii de oameni. Şi cînd s'au sculat dimineaţa, iată că toţi aceştia erau nişte trupuri moarte.

Then the angel of the Lord went out and killed 185, 000 men in the Assyrian camp. And when men got up early in the morning, they saw all these dead bodies.

37 A tunci Sanherib, împăratul Asiriei, şi -a ridicat tabăra, a plecat şi s'a întors; şi a rămas la Ninive.

So Sennacherib king of Assyria left and returned home, and lived at Nineveh.

38 Ş i, pe cînd stătea cu faţa la pămînt rugîndu-se în casa lui Nisroc, dumnezeul său, fiii săi Adramalec şi Şareţer l-au lovit cu sabia, şi au fugit în ţara Ararat. Şi în locul lui a domnit fiul său Esar-Hadon.

When he was worshiping in the house of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer killed him with the sword. Then they ran away to the land of Ararat. And his son Esarhaddon became king in his place.
