1 S atana s'a sculat împotriva lui Israel, şi a aţîţat pe David să facă numărătoarea lui Israel.

Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.

2 Ş i David a zis lui Ioab şi căpeteniilor poporului:,, Duceţi-vă, de faceţi numărătoarea lui Israel, dela Beer-Şeba, pînă la Dan, şi spuneţi-mi ca să ştiu la cît se ridică numărul poporului.``

So David said to Joab and the leaders of the people, “Go and number Israel from Beersheba to Dan. Then let me know how many people there are.”

3 I oab a răspuns:,, Domnul să facă pe poporul Lui încă de o sută de ori pe atîta! Împărate, domnul meu, nu sînt ei toţi slujitori ai domnului meu? Dar pentruce cere domnul meu lucrul acesta? Pentruce să faci pe Israel să păcătuiască astfel?``

Joab said, “May the Lord add to His people a hundred times as many as they are! But, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord want this thing done? Why should he bring guilt upon Israel?”

4 Î mpăratul a stăruit în porunca pe care o dădea lui Ioab. Şi Ioab a plecat, şi a străbătut tot Israelul; apoi s'a întors la Ierusalim.

But the king’s word was stronger than Joab. So Joab left and went through all of Israel, and returned to Jerusalem.

5 I oab a dat lui David cartea numărătorii poporului: în tot Israelul erau o mie de mii şi o sută de mii de bărbaţi în stare să scoată sabia, iar în Iuda erau patrusute şaptezeci de mii de bărbaţi în stare să scoată sabia.

He gave the number of all the people to David. There were 1, 100, 000 men in all Israel who used the sword. And there were 470, 000 men in Judah who used the sword.

6 Î ntre ei n'a numărat şi pe Levi şi Beniamin, căci porunca împăratului i se părea o urîciune.

But Joab did not number Levi and Benjamin among them because he did not like what the king had told him to do.

7 P orunca aceasta n'a plăcut lui Dumnezeu, care a lovit pe Israel.

God was not pleased that Israel was numbered so He punished Israel.

8 Ş i David a zis lui Dumnezeu:,, Am săvîrşit un mare păcat făcînd lucrul acesta! Acum, iartă fărădelegea robului Tău, căci am lucrat în totul ca un nebun!``

David said to God, “I have sinned very much by doing this thing. But now I beg You, take away the sin of Your servant for I have done a very foolish thing.”

9 D omnul a vorbit astfel lui Gad, văzătorul lui David:

The Lord said to Gad, David’s man of God,

10 D u-te şi spune lui David:, Aşa vorbeşte Domnul:,Îţi pun înainte trei urgii; alege una din ele, şi te voi lovi cu ea.``

“Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says. “I give you three things to choose from. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”

11 G ad s'a dus la David, şi i -a zis:,, Aşa vorbeşte Domnul:, Primeşte:

So Gad came to David and said, “This is what the Lord says. ‘Choose one of these.

12 s au trei ani de foamete, sau trei luni în timpul cărora să fii nimicit de protivnicii tăi şi atins de sabia vrăjmaşilor tăi, sau trei zile în timpul cărora sabia Domnului şi ciuma să fie în ţară şi îngerul Domnului să ducă nimicirea în tot ţinutul lui Israel. Vezi acum ce trebuie să răspund Celui ce mă trimete.``

Three years of no food in the land; three months to be destroyed by the sword of those who hate you; or three days of the sword of the Lord. This would be a disease sent upon the land. The angel of the Lord would destroy with disease through all the land of Israel.’ Now decide what answer I should give Him Who sent me.”

13 D avid a răspuns lui Gad:,, Sînt într'o mare strîmtorare! Să cad în mînile Domnului, căci îndurările Lui sînt nemărginite; dar să nu cad în mînile oamenilor!``

David said to Gad, “I am in much trouble. Let me fall into the hand of the Lord. For His loving-kindness is very great. But do not let me fall into the hand of man.”

14 D omnul a trimes ciuma în Israel, şi au căzut şaptezeci de mii de oameni din Israel.

So the Lord sent a disease upon Israel. And 70, 000 men of Israel died.

15 D umnezeu a trimes un înger la Ierusalim, ca să -l nimicească; şi, pe cînd îl nimicea, Domnul S'a uitat, şi I -a părut rău de răul acesta; şi a zis îngerului care nimicea:,, Destul! Acum, trage-ţi mîna înapoi!`` Îngerul Domnului stătea lîngă aria lui Ornan, Iebusitul.

God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem. But as he was about to destroy it, the Lord saw the trouble and was sorry. He said to the destroying angel, “It is enough. Now take your hand away.” The angel of the Lord was standing by the grain-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

16 D avid a ridicat ochii, şi a văzut pe îngerul Domnului stînd între pămînt şi cer, şi ţinînd în mînă sabia scoasă şi întoarsă împotriva Ierusalimului. Atunci David şi bătrînii, înveliţi cu saci, au căzut cu faţa la pămînt.

Then David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between earth and heaven. The angel had his sword in his hand, held out over Jerusalem. Then David and the leaders fell on their faces. They were dressed in cloth made from hair.

17 Ş i David a zis lui Dumnezeu:,, Oare n'am poruncit eu numărătoarea poporului? Eu am păcătuit şi am făcut răul acesta; dar oile acestea, ce au făcut oare? Doamne, Dumnezeul meu, mîna Ta să fie dar peste mine şi peste casa tatălui meu şi să nu peardă pe poporul Tău!``

David said to God, “Was it not I who said that the people must be numbered? I am the one who has sinned and done a very bad thing. But what have these sheep done? O Lord my God, I beg You, let Your hand be against me and my father’s house. But do not let the trouble be upon Your people.”

18 Î ngerul Domnului a spus lui Gad să vorbească lui David, să se suie să ridice un altar Domnului în aria lui Ornan, Iebusitul.

Then the angel of the Lord told Gad to say to David, “Go up and build an altar to the Lord on the grain-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.”

19 D avid s'a suit, după cuvîntul pe care -l spusese Gad în Numele Domnului.

So David went up when he heard what Gad said in the name of the Lord.

20 O rnan s'a întors şi a văzut îngerul, şi cei patru fii ai lui s'au ascuns împreună cu el: treiera grîul atunci.

Now Ornan was beating the grain. He turned and saw the angel. And his four sons hid themselves.

21 C înd a ajuns David la Ornan, Ornan s'a uitat, şi a zărit pe David; apoi a ieşit din arie, şi s'a închinat înaintea lui David, cu faţa la pămînt.

Ornan looked and saw David coming. So he went out from the grain-floor and put his face to the ground showing respect to David.

22 D avid a zis lui Ornan:,, Dă-mi locul ariei să zidesc în el un altar Domnului; dă-mi -l pe preţul lui în argint, ca să se depărteze urgia deasupra poporului.``

David said to him, “Give me this part of the grain-floor, that I may build an altar on it to the Lord. Give it to me for the full price. Then the disease will be turned away from the people.”

23 O rnan a răspuns lui David:,, Ia -l, şi să facă domnul meu împăratul ce va crede; iată eu dau boii pentru arderea de tot, carăle în loc de lemne, şi grîul pentru darul de mîncare, toate le dau.``

Ornan said to David, “Take it. Let my lord the king do what is good in his eyes. See, I will give the bulls for burnt gifts. I will give the objects made of wood used for beating grain for the fire-wood. And I will give the grain for the grain gift. I will give it all.”

24 D ar împăratul David a zis lui Ornan:,, Nu! Vreau să -l cumpăr pe preţul lui în argint, căci nu voi da Domnului ce este al tău, şi nu voi aduce o ardere de tot care să nu mă coste nimic.``

But King David said to Ornan, “No, I will buy it for the full price. I will not take what is yours for the Lord. And I will not give a burnt gift for which I do not pay.”

25 Ş i David a dat lui Ornan şase sute de sicli de aur pentru locul ariei.

So David gave Ornan 600 pieces of gold by weight for the place.

26 D avid a zidit acolo un altar Domnului, şi a adus arderi de tot şi jertfe de mulţămire. A chemat pe Domnul, şi Domnul i -a răspuns prin foc, care s'a pogorît din cer pe altarul arderii de tot.

Then David built an altar there to the Lord. He gave burnt gifts and peace gifts, and he called to the Lord. The Lord answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt gifts.

27 A tunci Domnul a vorbit îngerului, care şi -a vîrît iarăş sabia în teacă.

Then the Lord told the angel to return his sword to its holder.

28 P e vremea aceasta, David, văzînd că Domnul îl ascultase în aria lui Ornan, Iebusitul, aducea jertfe acolo.

When David saw that the Lord had answered him on the grain-floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he gave his gifts there.

29 D ar locaşul Domnului, făcut de Moise în pustie, şi altarul arderilor de tot, erau atunci pe înălţimea Gabaonului.

The meeting tent which Moses had made in the desert was in the high place at Gibeon then. The altar of burnt gifts was there also.

30 D avid nu putea să meargă înaintea acestui altar să caute pe Dumnezeu, pentru că îl înspăimîntase sabia îngerului Domnului.

But David could not go in front of it to pray to God. For he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord.
