1 Î n vremea aceea, Iuda a părăsit pe fraţii săi, şi a tras la un om din Adulam, numit Hira.

Judah went away from his brothers at that time. He visited a certain Adullamite whose name was Hirah.

2 A colo, Iuda a văzut pe fata unui Cananit, numit Şua; a luat -o de nevastă, şi s'a culcat cu ea.

There Judah saw a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua. He took her as his wife and lived with her.

3 E a a rămas însărcinată, şi a născut un fiu, pe care l -a numit Er.

And she was going to have a child and gave birth to a son. He gave him the name Er.

4 A rămas iarăş însărcinată, şi a mai născut un fiu, căruia i -a pus numele Onan.

Then she was going to have another child and she gave birth to a son. She gave him the name Onan.

5 A mai născut iarăş un fiu, căruia i -a pus numele Şela; Iuda era la Czib, cînd a născut ea.

Then she gave birth to another son at Chezib. And she gave him the name Shelah.

6 I uda a luat întîiului său născut Er, o nevastă numită Tamar.

Judah chose a wife for his first-born son Er. Her name was Tamar.

7 E r, întîiul născut al lui Iuda, era rău înaintea Domnului; şi Domnul l -a omorît.

But Er, Judah’s first-born, was sinful in the eyes of the Lord. So the Lord took his life.

8 A tunci Iuda a zis lui Onan:,, Du-te la nevasta fratelui tău, ia -o de nevastă, ca cumnat, şi ridică sămînţă fratelui tău.``

Then Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife. Do your duty as her brother-in-law. Have children for your brother.”

9 O nan, ştiind că sămînţa aceasta n'are să fie a lui, vărsa sămînţa pe pămînt ori de cîte ori se culca cu nevasta fratelui său, ca să nu dea sămînţă fratelui său.

But Onan knew that the children would not be his. So when he went in to his brother’s wife, he wasted his seed on the ground to keep his brother from having children.

10 C e făcea el n'a plăcut Domnului, care l -a omorît şi pe el.

What he did was sinful in the eyes of the Lord. So the Lord took his life also.

11 A tunci Iuda a zis norei sale Tamar:,, Rămîi văduvă în casa tatălui tău, pînă va creşte fiul meu Şela.`` Zicea aşa ca să nu moară şi Şela ca fraţii lui. Tamar s'a dus, şi a locuit în casa tatălui ei.

Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Stay in your father’s house as a woman whose husband has died, until my son Shelah is grown.” For he thought, “I am afraid that he also may die like his brothers.” So Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.

12 A u trecut multe zile, şi fata lui Şua, nevasta lui Iuda, a murit. După ce au trecut zilele de jale, Iuda s'a suit la Timna, la cei ce -i tundeau oile, el şi prietenul său Hira, Adulamitul.

Now after a long time, Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died. And after the time of sorrow, Judah and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went to the men who cut the wool from his sheep at Timnah.

13 A u dat de veste Tamarei despre lucrul acesta, şi i-au zis:,, Iată că socru-tău se suie la Timna, ca să-şi tundă oile.``

It was told to Tamar, “Your father-in-law is going to Timnah to cut the wool from his sheep.”

14 A tunci ea şi -a lepădat hainele de văduvă, s'a acoperit cu o măhramă, s'a îmbrăcat în alte haine, şi a şezut jos la intrarea în Enaim, pe drumul care duce la Timna; căci vedea că Şela se făcuse mare, şi ea nu -i fusese dată de nevastă.

So she took off the clothes of a woman whose husband has died and put on other clothes and covered her face with cloth. Then she sat in the gate of Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah was grown, and she had not been given to him for a wife.

15 I uda a văzut -o, şi a luat -o drept curvă, pentru că îşi acoperise faţa.

When Judah saw her, he thought she was a woman who sold the use of her body. For she had covered her face.

16 S 'a abătut la ea din drum, şi a zis:,, Lasă-mă să mă culc cu tine!`` Căci n'a cunoscut -o că era noru-sa. Ea a zis:,, Ce-mi dai ca să te culci cu mine?``

He went to her at the side of the road, and said, “Here now, let me come in to you.” He did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, “What will you give me to come in to me?”

17 E l a răspuns:,, Am să-ţi trimet un ied din turma mea.`` Ea a zis:,,Îmi dai un zălog, pînă îl vei trimete?``

He answered, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” She asked, “Will you give something as a promise until you send it?”

18 E l a răspuns:,, Ce zălog să-ţi dau?`` Ea a zis:,, Inelul tău, lanţul tău, şi toiagul pe care -l ai în mînă.`` El i le -a dat. Apoi s'a culcat cu ea; şi ea a rămas însărcinată dela el.

He said, “What should I give you as a promise?” And she said, “The ring you use to mark your name, and its string, and the stick that is in your hand.” So he gave them to her and went in to her. And she was going to have a baby by him.

19 E a s'a sculat, şi a plecat; şi -a scos mahrama şi s'a îmbrăcat iarăş în hainele de văduvă.

Then she got up and left. She took off the cloth that covered her, and put on the clothes worn by a woman whose husband has died.

20 I uda a trimes iedul prin prietenul său Adulamitul, ca să scoată zălogul din mînile femeii. Dar acesta n'a găsit -o.

Judah sent his friend the Adullamite to bring the young goat to the woman and take from her the things he had given as a promise. But he did not find her.

21 A întrebat pe oamenii locului, şi a zis:,, Unde este curva aceea, care stătea aici la Enaim, pe drum?`` Ei au răspuns:,, N'a fost nici o curvă aici.``

He asked the men of the place, “Where is the woman who was selling the use of her body beside the road at Enaim?” They said, “There has been no woman selling the use of her body here.”

22 A dulamitul s'a întors la Iuda, şi i -a spus:,, N'am găsit -o; şi chiar oamenii de acolo au zis:,, N'a fost nici o curvă aici.``

So he returned to Judah, and said, “I did not find her. The men of the place said, ‘There has been no woman selling the use of her body here.’”

23 I uda a zis:,,Ţină ce a luat, numai să nu ne facem de rîs. Iată, am trimes iedul acesta, şi n'ai găsit -o.``

Then Judah said, “Let her keep the things, or else we will be laughed at. I sent the young goat, and you did not find her.”

24 C am după trei luni, au venit şi au spus lui Iuda:,, Tamar, noru-ta, a curvit, şi a rămas chiar însărcinată în urma curvirii ei.`` Şi Iuda a zis:,, Scoateţi -o afară ca să fie arsă.``

About three months later, Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has sold the use of her body. She is going to have a baby by doing this sinful thing.” Judah said, “Bring her out and let her be burned!”

25 D upă ce au scos -o afară, ea a trimes să spună socrului său:,, Dela omul acela, ale cui sînt lucrurile acestea, am rămas eu însărcinată; vezi, te rog, al cui este inelul acesta, lanţurile acestea, şi toiagul acesta.``

When she was brought out, she sent word to her father-in-law, “I am going to have a baby by the man who owns these things.” She said, “Look and see, who owns this ring for marking a name, and this string and stick?”

26 I uda le -a cunoscut, şi a zis:,, Ea este mai puţin vinovată decît mine, fiindcă n'am dat -o de nevastă fiului meu Şela.`` Şi nu s'a mai împreunat cu ea deatunci.

Judah saw that they belonged to him. He said, “She is more right than I, because I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not lie with her again.

27 C înd i -a venit vremea să nască, iată că în pîntecele ei erau doi gemeni.

When the time came for Tamar to give birth, there were two babies.

28 Ş i în timpul naşterii, unul a scos mîna înainte; moaşa i -a apucat mîna, şi a legat -o cu un fir roş, zicînd:,, Acesta a ieşit cel dintîi.``

While she was giving birth, one put out a hand. The nurse took his hand and tied a red string around it, saying, “This one came out first.”

29 D ar el a tras mîna înapoi, şi a ieşit frate-său. Atunci moaşa a zis:,, Ce spărtură ai făcut!`` De aceea i -a pus numele Pereţ (Spărtură).

But when he pulled away his hand, his brother was born. Then she said, “What an opening you have made for yourself!” So he was given the name of Perez.

30 Î n urmă a ieşit fratele lui, care avea firul roş la mînă; de aceea i-au pus numele Zerah (Cărămiziu). Iosif în Egipt.

After that, his brother came out with the red string around his hand. He was given the name Zerah.
