1 A colo era un om de nimic, numit Şeba, fiul lui Bicri, Beniamitul. El a sunat din trîmbiţă, şi a zis:,, Noi n'avem nicio parte cu David, nicio moştenire cu fiul lui Isai! Fiecare la cortul său, Israele!``

A man of no worth happened to be there whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite. He sounded the horn and said, “We have no share in David! We have no share in the son of Jesse! Every man to his tents, O Israel!”

2 Ş i toţi bărbaţii lui Israel s'au depărtat de David, şi au urmat pe Şeba, fiul lui Bicri. Dar bărbaţii lui Iuda au rămas credincioşi împăratului lor, şi l-au însoţit dela Iordan pînă la Ierusalim.

So all the men of Israel stopped following David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the men of Judah were not moved from following their king, from the Jordan to Jerusalem.

3 D avid a intrat iarăş în casa lui la Ierusalim. Împăratul a luat cele zece ţiitoare pe cari le lăsase pentru paza casei, şi le -a pus într'o casă subt pază; a îngrijit de ele, dar n'a intrat la ele. Şi au fost închise pînă în ziua morţii lor, trăind în văduvie.

Then David came to his house at Jerusalem. The king took his ten women whom he had left to take care of the house, and had a prison soldier watch them. David gave them food, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as women whose husbands had died.

4 Î mpăratul a zis lui Amasa:,, Cheamă-mi peste trei zile pe bărbaţii lui Iuda; şi tu să fii de faţă aici.``

Then the king said to Amasa, “Call the men of Judah to come to me within three days, and you be here yourself.”

5 A masa a plecat să cheme pe Iuda; dar a zăbovit peste vremea pe care i -o hotărîse împăratul.

So Amasa went to call out the men of Judah. But he took longer than the time which had been given him.

6 D avid a zis atunci lui Abişai:,,Şeba, fiul lui Bicri, ne va face acum mai mult rău decît Absalom. Ia tu însuţi pe slujitorii stăpînului tău, şi urmăreşte -l, ca nu cumva să găsească cetăţi întărite, şi să se ascundă dinaintea noastră.``

David said to Abishai, “Now Bichri’s son Sheba will bring us more trouble than Absalom. Take your lord’s servants and go after him. Or he might find strong cities for himself, and get away from us.”

7 Ş i Abişai a plecat, urmat de oamenii lui Ioab, de Cheretiţi şi de Peletiţi, şi de toţi vitejii; au ieşit din Ierusalim, ca să urmărească pe Şeba, fiul lui Bicri.

So Joab’s men went out after him. With them went the Cherethites, the Pelethites and all the strong men. They left Jerusalem to go after Sheba the son of Bichri.

8 C înd au fost lîngă piatra cea mare care este la Gabaon, Amasa a ajuns înaintea lor. Ioab era încins cu o sabie pe deasupra hainelor de război, cu cari era îmbrăcat; ea era legată la coapsă şi sta în teacă, şi cînd a înaintat Ioab, sabia a alunecat.

Amasa came to meet them at the large stone in Gibeon. Now Joab was dressed in soldier’s clothing. Over his clothing was a belt with a sword in its holder tied at his side. As he walked, the sword fell out.

9 I oab a zis lui Amasa:,, Eşti sănătos, frate?`` Şi cu mîna dreaptă a apucat pe Amasa de barbă să -l sărute.

Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And he took Amasa by the hair of his face with his right hand to kiss him.

10 A masa n'a luat seamă la sabia care era în mîna lui Ioab; şi Ioab l -a lovit cu ea în pîntece, şi i -a vărsat măruntaiele pe pămînt, fără să -i mai dea o a doua lovitură. Şi Amasa a murit. Ioab şi fratele său Abişai au urmărit pe Şeba, fiul lui Bicri.

But Amasa did not see the sword which was in Joab’s hand. So Joab hit him in the stomach with it, and poured his inside parts out on the ground. He did not hit him again, and Amasa died. Then Joab and his brother Abishai went after Sheba the son of Bichri.

11 U n bărbat dintre oamenii lui Ioab a rămas lîngă Amasa, şi zicea:,, Cine vrea pe Ioab şi cine este pentru David? Să urmeze pe Ioab!``

Now one of Joab’s young men stood by him and said, “Whoever favors Joab and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab.”

12 A masa se rostogolea în sînge în mijlocul drumului; şi omul acela, văzînd că tot poporul se opreşte, a tras pe Amasa din drum, pe un cîmp, şi a aruncat o haină pe el, cînd a văzut că toţi cei ce ajungeau lîngă el se opreau.

But Amasa lay in his blood in the center of the road. When the man saw that all the people stood still, he took Amasa out of the road and into the field. And he threw a covering over him.

13 D upăce a fost luat din drum, fiecare a urmat pe Ioab, ca să urmărească pe Şeba, fiul lui Bicri.

After he was taken out of the road, all the men went on and followed Joab to go after Sheba the son of Bichri.

14 I oab a străbătut toate seminţiile lui Israel înspre Abel-Bet-Maaca, şi toţi bărbaţii de seamă s'au strîns şi l-au urmat.

Sheba passed through all the families of Israel to Abel Bethmaacah. Then all the Berites gathered together and followed him into the city.

15 A u venit şi au împresurat pe Şeba în Abel-Bet-Maaca, şi au ridicat împotriva cetăţii un val care atingea întăritura. Tot poporul care era cu Ioab săpa zidul ca să -l facă să cadă.

And all the men who were with Joab came and gathered their armies around him in Abel Bethmaacah. They built up a hill of dirt against the wall of the city. And they were trying their best to make the wall fall down.

16 A tunci o femeie înţeleaptă a început să strige din cetate:,, Ascultaţi, ascultaţi! Spuneţi, vă rog, lui Ioab:, Apropie-te pînă aici, căci vreau să-ţi vorbesc!``

Then a wise woman called from the city, “Listen! I beg you, tell Joab to come here that I may speak with him.”

17 E l s'a apropiat de ea, şi femeia a zis:,, Tu eşti Ioab?`` El a răspuns:,, Eu sînt.`` Şi ea i -a zis:,, Ascultă vorbele roabei tale.`` El i -a răspuns:,, Ascult.``

So he came to her, and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” He answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Listen to the words of your woman servant.” And he answered, “I am listening.”

18 Ş i ea a zis:,, Odinioară era obiceiul să se spună:, Să întrebăm în Abel!` Şi totul se isprăvea astfel.

Then she said, “In the past they used to say, ‘Let them ask for words of wisdom at Abel.’ And so they would stop fighting.

19 E u sînt una din cetăţile liniştite şi credincioase din Israel; şi tu cauţi să pierzi o cetate care este o mamă în Israel! Pentruce ai nimici tu moştenirea Domnului?``

I am one of peace and faith in Israel. You want to destroy a city and a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up the gift of the Lord?”

20 I oab a răspuns:,, Departe, departe de mine gîndul să nimicesc sau să dărîm!

Joab answered, “Far be it from me! Far be it that I should swallow up or destroy!

21 N u este aşa! Dar un om din muntele Efraim, numit Şeba, fiul lui Bicri, a ridicat mîna împotriva împăratului David; daţi -l încoace numai pe el, şi mă voi depărta de cetate.`` Femeia a zis lui Ioab:,, Iată, capul lui îţi va fi aruncat peste zid.``

That is not true. But a man from the hill country of Ephraim has turned against King David. His name is Sheba the son of Bichri. Give up only him, and I will leave the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “See, his head will be thrown to you over the wall.”

22 Ş i femeia s'a dus şi a înduplecat pe tot poporul cu înţelepciunea ei; au tăiat capul lui Şeba, fiul lui Bicri, şi l-au aruncat lui Ioab. Ioab a sunat din trîmbiţă; s'au împrăştiat de lîngă cetate, şi fiecare s'a dus în cortul lui. Şi Ioab s'a întors la Ierusalim, la împărat.

Then the woman went to all the people with her plan. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it to Joab. So he sounded the horn and they left the city, every man going to his home. Joab returned to the king at Jerusalem.

23 I oab era mai mare peste toată oştirea lui Israel; Benaia, fiul lui Iehoiada, era în fruntea Cheretiţilor şi a Peletiţilor;

Now Joab was the captain of the whole army of Israel. Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was captain of the Cherethites and the Pelethites.

24 A doram era mai mare peste dări; Iosafat, fiul lui Ahilud, era scriitor (arhivar);

Adoram was captain of those who were made to work. Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud wrote down the things that happened.

25 Ş eia era logofăt: Ţadoc şi Abiatar erau preoţi;

Sheva was the teacher. Zadok and Abiathar were religious leaders.

26 ş i Ira din Iair era slujbaş de stat al lui David.

And Ira the Jairite was a religious leader to David also.
