1 Î n locul lui Ieconia, fiul lui Ioiachim a început să domnească Zedechia, fiul lui Iosia. El a fost pus împărat în ţara lui Iuda de Nebucadneţar, împăratul Babilonului.

Zedekiah the son of Josiah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had made king in the land of Judah, ruled in place of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim.

2 D ar nici el, nici slujitorii lui, nici poporul din ţară, n'au ascultat cuvintele, pe cari le -a rostit Domnul prin proorocul Ieremia.

But he and his servants and the people of the land would not listen to what the Lord said through Jeremiah the man of God.

3 Î mpăratul Zedechia a trimes pe Iucal, fiul lui Şelemia, şi pe Ţefania, fiul lui Maaseia, preotul, la proorocul Ieremia, să -i spună;,, Mijloceşte pentru noi la Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru.``

King Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the religious leader, to Jeremiah the man of God, saying, “Pray to the Lord our God for us.”

4 P e atunci Ieremia umbla slobod prin popor: nu -l aruncaseră încă în temniţă.

Now Jeremiah was still free to come and go among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison.

5 O astea lui Faraon ieşise din Egipt; şi Haldeii, cari împresurau Ierusalimul, cînd auziseră vestea aceasta, plecaseră din Ierusalim.

The army of Pharaoh had come out of Egypt. And when the Babylonian army which had been around Jerusalem heard the news about them, they left Jerusalem.

6 A tunci cuvîntul Domnului a vorbit proorocului Ieremia astfel:

Then the Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the man of God, saying,

7 A şa vorbeşte Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel:, Iată ce să spuneţi împăratului lui Iuda, care v'a trimes la Mine să Mă întrebaţi:, Iată că oastea lui Faraon, care pornise să vă ajute, se întoarce în ţara ei, în Egipt;

“This is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to ask Me what will happen, “See, Pharaoh’s army which has come to help you is going to return to its own land of Egypt.

8 i ar Haldeii se vor întoarce, vor bate iarăş cetatea aceasta, o vor lua, şi o vor arde cu foc.``

Then the Babylonians will return and fight against this city. They will take it and burn it with fire.”’

9 A şa vorbeşte Domnul:, Nu vă înşelaţi, zicînd:, Haldeii se vor depărta dela noi!` Căci nu se vor depărta!

The Lord says, ‘Do not fool yourselves, saying, “For sure the Babylonians will go away from us.” For they will not go.

10 Ş i chiar dacă aţi bate toată oastea Haldeilor, cari se războiesc cu voi, chiar dacă n'ar mai rămînea din ei decît vreo cîţiva oameni răniţi, tot s'ar ridica fiecare din cortul lui, şi ar arde cetatea aceasta cu foc.``

Even if you had won the battle against the whole Babylonian army fighting with you, and only men who were hurt were left in their tents, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.’”

11 P e cînd se depărtase oastea Haldeilor de Ierusalim, de frica oastei lui Faraon,

Now the Babylonian army had left Jerusalem because of Pharaoh’s army.

12 I eremia a vrut să iasă din Ierusalim, ca să se ducă în ţara lui Beniamin, şi să scape din mijlocul poporului.

And so Jeremiah left Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to take his land there among the people.

13 C înd a ajuns însă la poarta lui Beniamin, căpitanul străjerilor, numit Ireia, fiul lui Şelemia, fiul lui Hanania, era acolo, şi a pus mîna pe proorocul Ieremia, zicînd:,, Tu vrei să treci la Haldei!``

While he was at the Gate of Benjamin, a soldier was there watching. His name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah. He took hold of Jeremiah the man of God, saying, “You are going over to the Babylonians!”

14 I eremia a răspuns:,, Nu este adevărat! Nu vreau să trec la Haldei!`` Dar Ireia n'a vrut să -l creadă, ci a apucat pe Ieremia şi l -a dus înaintea căpeteniilor.

But Jeremiah said, “It is a lie! I am not going over to the Babylonians.” But Irijah would not listen to him. He took hold of Jeremiah and brought him to the leaders.

15 C ăpeteniile, mîniate pe Ieremia, l-au lovit, şi l-au aruncat în temniţă în casa logofătului Ionatan, căci o prefăcuseră în temniţă.

The leaders were angry with Jeremiah and beat him. They put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the writer, which they had made into a prison.

16 A şa a intrat Ieremia în temniţă şi în gherlă, unde a stat multă vreme.

After Jeremiah had been in an under-ground prison many days,

17 Î mpăratul Zedechia a trimes să -l aducă, şi l -a întrebat în taină la el acasă. El a zis:,, Ai vreun cuvînt din partea Domnului?`` Ieremia a răspuns:,, Da``. Şi a a dăugat:,, Vei fi dat în mîinile împăratului Babilonului!``

King Zedekiah sent for him and had him brought to his house. The king asked him in secret, “Is there any word from the Lord?” And Jeremiah said, “There is!” Then he said, “You will be given over to the king of Babylon!”

18 I eremia a mai spus împăratului Zedechia:,, Cu ce am păcătuit eu împotriva ta, împotriva slujitorilor tăi, şi împotriva poporului acestuia, de m'aţi aruncat în temniţă?

Jeremiah also said to King Zedekiah, “In what way have I sinned against you or your servants, or against these people? Why have you put me in prison?

19 Ş i unde sînt proorocii voştri, cari vă prooroceau, şi ziceau:,Împăratul Babilonului nu va veni împotriva voastră, nici împotriva ţării acesteia?`

Where are your men who spoke to you in God’s name, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land’?

20 A cum ascultă, te rog, împărate, domnul meu! Fie bine primite înaintea ta rugăminţile mele! Nu mă trimete iarăş în casa logofătului Ionatan, ca nu cumva să mor acolo!``

But now I ask you to listen, O my lord the king. Hear what I ask, and do not make me return to the house of Jonathan the writer, or I will die there.”

21 Î mpăratul Zedechia a poruncit să păzească pe Ieremia în curtea temniţei, şi să -i dea în fiecare zi o pîne din uliţa brutarilor, pînă s'a sfîrşit toată pînea din cetate. Astfel Ieremia a rămas în curtea temniţei.

So King Zedekiah had them put Jeremiah in the open space of the prison. And a loaf of bread was given to him every day from the bread makers’ street, until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah stayed in the open space of the prison.
