1 I l re Sedechia, figlio di Giosia, regnò al posto di Conia, figlio di Ioiachim, e fu costituito re nel paese di Giuda da Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia.

Zedekiah the son of Josiah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had made king in the land of Judah, ruled in place of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim.

2 M a né egli, né i suoi servitori, né il popolo del paese diedero ascolto alle parole che il Signore aveva pronunciate per mezzo del profeta Geremia.

But he and his servants and the people of the land would not listen to what the Lord said through Jeremiah the man of God.

3 I l re Sedechia mandò Ieucal, figlio di Selemia, e Sofonia, figlio di Maaseia, il sacerdote, dal profeta Geremia per dirgli: «Prega per noi il Signore, nostro Dio».

King Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the religious leader, to Jeremiah the man of God, saying, “Pray to the Lord our God for us.”

4 G eremia andava e veniva in mezzo al popolo e non era ancora stato messo in prigione.

Now Jeremiah was still free to come and go among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison.

5 L ’esercito del faraone era uscito d’Egitto; e quando i Caldei che assediavano Gerusalemme ne ebbero la notizia, tolsero l’assedio a Gerusalemme.

The army of Pharaoh had come out of Egypt. And when the Babylonian army which had been around Jerusalem heard the news about them, they left Jerusalem.

6 A llora la parola del Signore fu rivolta al profeta Geremia in questi termini:

Then the Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the man of God, saying,

7 « Così parla il Signore, Dio d’Israele: “Dite così al re di Giuda che vi ha mandati da me per consultarmi: Ecco, l’esercito del faraone, che era uscito in vostro soccorso, è tornato nel suo paese, in Egitto;

“This is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to ask Me what will happen, “See, Pharaoh’s army which has come to help you is going to return to its own land of Egypt.

8 i Caldei torneranno e combatteranno contro questa città, la conquisteranno e la daranno alle fiamme”.

Then the Babylonians will return and fight against this city. They will take it and burn it with fire.”’

9 C osì parla il Signore: “Non ingannate voi stessi dicendo: ‘Certo, i Caldei se ne andranno da noi’; perché non se ne andranno.

The Lord says, ‘Do not fool yourselves, saying, “For sure the Babylonians will go away from us.” For they will not go.

10 A nzi, anche se voi sconfiggeste tutto l’esercito dei Caldei che combatte contro di voi e non ne rimanessero che degli uomini feriti, questi si alzerebbero, ciascuno dalla sua tenda, e darebbero questa città alle fiamme”». Geremia in prigione

Even if you had won the battle against the whole Babylonian army fighting with you, and only men who were hurt were left in their tents, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.’”

11 Q uando l’esercito dei Caldei si fu ritirato davanti a Gerusalemme a causa dell’esercito del faraone,

Now the Babylonian army had left Jerusalem because of Pharaoh’s army.

12 G eremia uscì da Gerusalemme per andare nel paese di Beniamino e ricevervi la sua porzione in mezzo al popolo.

And so Jeremiah left Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to take his land there among the people.

13 M a quando fu alla porta di Beniamino, c’era là un capitano della guardia di nome Ireia, figlio di Selemia, figlio di Anania, il quale arrestò il profeta Geremia, dicendo: «Tu vai ad arrenderti ai Caldei».

While he was at the Gate of Benjamin, a soldier was there watching. His name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah. He took hold of Jeremiah the man of God, saying, “You are going over to the Babylonians!”

14 G eremia rispose: «È falso! Io non vado ad arrendermi ai Caldei», ma l’altro non gli diede ascolto; arrestò Geremia e lo condusse dai capi.

But Jeremiah said, “It is a lie! I am not going over to the Babylonians.” But Irijah would not listen to him. He took hold of Jeremiah and brought him to the leaders.

15 I capi si adirarono contro Geremia, lo percossero e lo misero in prigione nella casa di Gionatan, il segretario; perché di quella avevano fatto un carcere.

The leaders were angry with Jeremiah and beat him. They put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the writer, which they had made into a prison.

16 Q uando Geremia fu entrato nella prigione sotterranea fra le segrete e vi fu rimasto molti giorni,

After Jeremiah had been in an under-ground prison many days,

17 i l re Sedechia lo mandò a prendere, lo interrogò in casa sua, di nascosto, e gli disse: «C’è qualche parola da parte del Signore ?» Geremia rispose: «Sì, c’è»; e aggiunse: «Tu sarai dato in mano del re di Babilonia».

King Zedekiah sent for him and had him brought to his house. The king asked him in secret, “Is there any word from the Lord?” And Jeremiah said, “There is!” Then he said, “You will be given over to the king of Babylon!”

18 G eremia disse inoltre al re Sedechia: «Che male ho commesso contro di te o contro i tuoi servitori o contro questo popolo, perché mi abbiate messo in prigione?

Jeremiah also said to King Zedekiah, “In what way have I sinned against you or your servants, or against these people? Why have you put me in prison?

19 D ove sono ora i vostri profeti che vi profetizzavano, dicendo: “Il re di Babilonia non verrà contro di voi né contro questo paese”?

Where are your men who spoke to you in God’s name, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land’?

20 O ra ascolta, ti prego, o re, mio signore! La mia supplica giunga ben accolta in tua presenza; non farmi tornare nella casa di Gionatan lo scriba, altrimenti vi morirò».

But now I ask you to listen, O my lord the king. Hear what I ask, and do not make me return to the house of Jonathan the writer, or I will die there.”

21 A llora il re Sedechia ordinò che Geremia fosse custodito nel cortile della prigione e gli fosse dato tutti i giorni un pane dalla via dei fornai, finché tutto il pane della città fosse consumato. Così Geremia rimase nel cortile della prigione.

So King Zedekiah had them put Jeremiah in the open space of the prison. And a loaf of bread was given to him every day from the bread makers’ street, until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah stayed in the open space of the prison.
