1 M a ricòrdati del tuo Creatore nei giorni della tua giovinezza, prima che vengano i cattivi giorni e giungano gli anni dei quali dirai: «Io non ci ho più alcun piacere»;

Remember also your Maker while you are young, before the days of trouble come and the years when you will say, “I have no joy in them,”

2 p rima che il sole, la luce, la luna e le stelle si oscurino, e le nuvole tornino dopo la pioggia;

before the sun, the light, the moon and the stars are made dark, and clouds return after the rain.

3 p rima dell’età in cui i guardiani della casa tremano, gli uomini forti si curvano, le macinatrici si fermano perché sono ridotte a poche, quelli che guardano dalle finestre si oscurano,

This will be the day when the men who watch the house shake in fear. Strong men bow. Those who grind will stop because they are few. And the eyes of those who look through windows will not see well.

4 i due battenti della porta si chiudono sulla strada perché diminuisce il rumore della macina; in cui l’uomo si alza al canto dell’uccello, tutte le figlie del canto si affievoliscono,

The doors on the street will be shut when the sound of the grinding is no more. One will rise up at the sound of a bird. All the daughters of song will sing very low.

5 i n cui uno ha paura delle alture, ha degli spaventi mentre cammina, in cui fiorisce il mandorlo, la locusta si fa pesante e il cappero non fa più effetto, perché l’uomo se ne va alla sua dimora eterna e i piagnoni percorrono le strade;

Men will be afraid of a high place and of fears on the road. Flowers will grow on the almond tree. The grasshopper will pull himself along. And desire will be at an end. For man will go to his home that lasts forever, while people filled with sorrow go about in the street.

6 p rima che il cordone d’argento si stacchi, il vaso d’oro si spezzi, la brocca si rompa sulla fonte, la ruota infranta cada nel pozzo;

Remember Him before the silver rope of life is broken and the gold dish is crushed. Remember Him before the pot by the well is broken and the wheel by the water-hole is crushed.

7 p rima che la polvere torni alla terra com’era prima e lo spirito torni a Dio che l’ha dato.

Then the dust will return to the earth as it was. And the spirit will return to God Who gave it.

8 « Vanità delle vanità», dice l’Ecclesiaste, «tutto è vanità». Timore di Dio e ubbidienza

“It is of no use,” says the Preacher, “It is all for nothing!” The Preacher’s Last Words

9 L ’Ecclesiaste, oltre a essere un saggio, ha anche insegnato al popolo la scienza e ha ponderato, scrutato e messo in ordine un gran numero di sentenze.

Besides being a wise man, the Preacher also taught the people much learning. He thought about, and looked for, and put together many wise sayings.

10 L ’Ecclesiaste si è applicato a trovare parole gradevoli; esse sono state scritte con rettitudine e sono parole di verità.

The Preacher looked to find pleasing words and to write words of truth in the right way.

11 L e parole dei saggi sono come degli stimoli e le collezioni delle sentenze sono come chiodi ben piantati; esse sono date da un solo pastore.

The words of wise men are like a stick. Their gathered sayings are like well-driven nails given by one Shepherd.

12 D el resto, figlio mio, sta’ in guardia: si fanno dei libri in numero infinito; molto studiare è una fatica per il corpo.

But more than this, my son, be careful. There is no end to the writing of many books and reading many of them makes the body tired.

13 A scoltiamo dunque la conclusione di tutto il discorso: «Temi Dio e osserva i suoi comandamenti, perché questo è il tutto per l’uomo».

The last word, after all has been heard, is: Honor God and obey His Laws. This is all that every person must do.

14 D io infatti farà venire in giudizio ogni opera, tutto ciò che è occulto, sia bene, sia male.

For God will judge every act, even everything which is hidden, both good and bad.
