1 G esù andò al monte degli Ulivi.

(Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

2 A ll’alba tornò nel tempio, e tutto il popolo andò da lui; ed egli, sedutosi, li istruiva.

Early in the morning He went back to the house of God and all the people came to Him. He sat down and taught them.

3 A llora gli scribi e i farisei condussero una donna còlta in adulterio; e fattala stare in mezzo,

The teachers of the Law and the proud religious law-keepers came to Him. They brought a woman who had been caught doing a sex sin. They made her stand in front of them all.

4 g li dissero: «Maestro, questa donna è stata còlta in flagrante adulterio.

Then they said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of doing a sex sin.

5 O ra Mosè, nella legge, ci ha comandato di lapidare tali donne; tu che ne dici? »

Moses told us in the Law to throw stones and kill a woman like this. What do You say about it?”

6 D icevano questo per metterlo alla prova, per poterlo accusare. Ma Gesù, chinatosi, si mise a scrivere con il dito in terra.

They were trying to set a trap to find something against Him. Jesus got down and began to write in the dust with His finger.

7 E siccome continuavano a interrogarlo, egli si alzò e disse loro: «Chi di voi è senza peccato, scagli per primo la pietra contro di lei».

They kept on asking Him. Then He stood up and said, “Anyone of you who is without sin can throw the first stone at her.”

8 E , chinatosi di nuovo, scriveva in terra.

Again He got down and wrote in the dust.

9 E ssi, udito ciò, uscirono a uno a uno, cominciando dai più vecchi; e Gesù fu lasciato solo con la donna che stava là in mezzo.

When they heard what He said, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones until they were all gone. Then Jesus was left alone with the woman.

10 G esù, alzatosi, le disse: «Donna, dove sono ? Nessuno ti ha condannata?»

Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are those who spoke against you? Has no man said you are guilty?”

11 E lla rispose: «Nessuno, Signore». E Gesù disse: «Neppure io ti condanno; va’ e da ora in poi non peccare più».]] Gesù, la luce del mondo

She said, “No one, Sir.” Jesus said to her, “Neither do I say you are guilty. Go on your way and do not sin again.” ) Jesus Teaches about the Light of the World

12 G esù parlò loro di nuovo, dicendo: «Io sono la luce del mondo; chi mi segue non camminerà nelle tenebre, ma avrà la luce della vita».

Jesus spoke to all the people, saying, “I am the Light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will not walk in darkness. He will have the Light of Life.”

13 A llora i farisei gli dissero: «Tu testimoni di te stesso; la tua testimonianza non è vera».

The proud religious law-keepers said to Him, “You are talking about Yourself. What You say about Yourself is not true.”

14 G esù rispose loro: «Anche se io testimonio di me stesso, la mia testimonianza è vera, perché so da dove sono venuto e dove vado; ma voi non sapete da dove io vengo né dove vado.

Jesus said, “Even if I speak of Myself, what I am saying is true. I know where I came from and where I am going. You do not know where I came from or where I am going.

15 V oi giudicate secondo la carne; io non giudico nessuno.

You say as a man would say if people are guilty or not guilty. I am not saying anyone is guilty.

16 E anche se giudico, il mio giudizio è veritiero, perché non sono solo, ma io e il Padre che mi ha mandato.

But even if I did, it would be true. I am not alone. The Father Who sent Me is with Me.

17 D ’altronde nella vostra legge è scritto che la testimonianza di due uomini è vera.

It is written in your Law that when two men agree about something, it proves it is true.

18 O ra sono io a testimoniare di me stesso, e anche il Padre che mi ha mandato testimonia di me».

I speak for Myself and the Father Who sent Me speaks for Me.”

19 E ssi perciò gli dissero: «Dov’è tuo Padre?» Gesù rispose: «Voi non conoscete né me né il Padre mio; se conosceste me, conoscereste anche il Padre mio».

The proud religious law-keepers asked Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus said, “You do not know Me or My Father. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.”

20 Q ueste parole le pronunciò nella sala del tesoro, insegnando nel tempio; e nessuno lo arrestò, perché l’ora sua non era ancora venuta.

Jesus spoke these words near the money box while He taught in the house of God. No one put his hands on Jesus because His time had not yet come. Jesus Tells of His Going Away

21 E gli dunque disse loro di nuovo: «Io me ne vado e voi mi cercherete, e morirete nel vostro peccato; dove vado io, voi non potete venire».

Jesus spoke to the Jews again, saying, “I am going away. You will look for Me but you will die in your sins. Where I am going, you cannot come.”

22 P erciò i Giudei dicevano: «Si ucciderà forse? Poiché dice: “Dove vado io, voi non potete venire”».

The Jews said, “Will He kill Himself because He said, ‘Where I am going you cannot come’ ?”

23 E gli diceva loro: «Voi siete di quaggiù, io sono di lassù; voi siete di questo mondo, io non sono di questo mondo.

He answered them, “You are from below. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world.

24 P erciò vi ho detto che morirete nei vostri peccati; perché se non credete che io sono, morirete nei vostri peccati».

That is why I said that you will die in your sins. If you do not believe that I am the Christ, you will die in your sins.”

25 A llora gli domandarono: «Chi sei tu?» Gesù rispose loro: «Sono per l’appunto quello che vi dico.

Then they said to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus answered, “The answer is the same as I told you from the beginning.

26 H o molte cose da dire e da giudicare sul conto vostro; ma colui che mi ha mandato è veritiero, e le cose che ho udite da lui le dico al mondo».

I have much to say about you. I must say if you are guilty. But He Who sent Me is true. I tell the world the things I have heard from Him.”

27 E ssi non capirono che egli parlava loro del Padre.

They did not understand that Jesus was speaking to them about the Father.

28 G esù dunque disse {loro}: «Quando avrete innalzato il Figlio dell’uomo, allora conoscerete che io sono, e che non faccio nulla da me, ma dico queste cose come il Padre mi ha insegnato.

Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, you will know that I am the Christ. I do nothing of Myself. I say these things as My Father has taught Me.

29 E colui che mi ha mandato è con me; egli non mi ha lasciato solo, perché faccio sempre le cose che gli piacciono».

He that sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone. I always do what He wants Me to do.”

30 M entre egli parlava così, molti credettero in lui.

As Jesus said these things, many people put their trust in Him.

31 G esù allora disse a quei Giudei che avevano creduto in lui: «Se perseverate nella mia parola, siete veramente miei discepoli;

He said to the Jews who believed, “If you keep and obey My Word, then you are My followers for sure.

32 c onoscerete la verità e la verità vi farà liberi».

You will know the truth and the truth will make you free.” Jesus Teaches What It Means to Be Free

33 E ssi gli risposero: «Noi siamo discendenti di Abraamo, e non siamo mai stati schiavi di nessuno; come puoi tu dire: “Voi diverrete liberi”?»

They said to Jesus, “We are children of Abraham. We have never been servants to anyone. What do you mean when You say, ‘You will be free’?”

34 G esù rispose loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico che chiunque commette il peccato è schiavo del peccato.

Jesus answered them, “For sure, I tell you, everyone who sins is the servant of sin because sin has a hold on him.

35 O ra lo schiavo non dimora per sempre nella casa: il figlio vi dimora per sempre.

And the servant does not belong in the house. The son belongs in the house.

36 S e dunque il Figlio vi farà liberi, sarete veramente liberi.

So if the Son makes you free, you will be free for sure.

37 S o che siete discendenti di Abraamo; ma cercate di uccidermi, perché la mia parola non penetra in voi.

“I know that you are the children of Abraham. But you want to kill Me because My Word is not in your hearts.

38 I o dico quel che ho visto presso il Padre; e voi pure fate le cose che avete udite dal padre ».

I speak of what I saw when I was with My Father. You do what you have seen your father do.”

39 E ssi gli risposero: «Nostro padre è Abraamo». Gesù disse loro: «Se foste figli di Abraamo, fareste le opere di Abraamo;

They said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said, “If you were children of Abraham, you would do what he did.

40 o ra invece cercate di uccidermi, perché vi ho detto la verità che ho udita da Dio; Abraamo non fece così.

I am a Man Who has told you the truth as I heard it from God. Now you are trying to kill Me. Abraham never did anything like that.

41 V oi fate le opere del padre vostro». Essi {dunque} gli dissero: «Noi non siamo nati da fornicazione; abbiamo un solo Padre: Dio».

You are doing the works of your father.” They said to Him, “We were born of parents who were faithful in marriage. We have one Father. He is God.”

42 G esù disse loro: «Se Dio fosse vostro Padre, mi amereste, perché io sono proceduto e vengo da Dio; infatti io non sono venuto da me, ma è lui che mi ha mandato.

Jesus said to them, “If God were your father, you would love Me. I came from God. I did not come on My own, but God sent Me.

43 P erché non comprendete il mio parlare? Perché non potete dare ascolto alla mia parola.

Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you do not want to hear My teaching.

44 V oi siete figli del diavolo, che è vostro padre, e volete fare i desideri del padre vostro. Egli è stato omicida fin dal principio e non si è attenuto alla verità, perché non c’è verità in lui. Quando dice il falso parla di quel che è suo, perché è bugiardo e padre della menzogna.

The devil is your father. You are from him. You want to do the sinful things your father, the devil, wants you to do. He has been a killer from the beginning. The devil has nothing to do with the truth. There is no truth in him. It is expected of the devil to lie, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

45 A me, perché io dico la verità, voi non credete.

I tell you the truth and that is why you do not put your trust in Me.

46 C hi di voi mi convince di peccato? Se dico la verità, perché non mi credete?

Which one of you can say I am guilty of sin? If I tell you the truth, why do you not believe Me?

47 C hi è da Dio ascolta le parole di Dio. Per questo voi non le ascoltate; perché non siete da Dio». Gesù e Abraamo

Whoever is born of God listens to God’s Word. You do not hear His Word because you are not born of God.” The Jews Say Jesus Has a Demon

48 I Giudei gli risposero: «Non diciamo noi con ragione che sei un Samaritano e che hai un demonio?»

The Jews said to Jesus, “Are we not right when we say You are from the country of Samaria, and You have a demon?”

49 G esù replicò: «Io non ho un demonio, ma onoro il Padre mio, e voi mi disonorate.

Jesus said, “No, I do not have a demon. I honor My Father. You do not honor Me.

50 I o non cerco la mia gloria; v’è uno che la cerca e che giudica.

I am not looking for honor for Myself. There is One Who is looking for it. He says what is right from wrong.

51 I n verità, in verità vi dico che se uno osserva la mia parola, non vedrà mai la morte».

For sure, I tell you, if anyone keeps My Word, that one will never die.”

52 I Giudei {dunque} gli dissero: «Ora sappiamo che tu hai un demonio. Abraamo e i profeti sono morti, e tu dici: “Se uno osserva la mia parola, non gusterà mai la morte”.

Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know You have a demon. Abraham died. The early preachers died. You say, ‘If anyone keeps My Word, that one will never die.’

53 S ei tu forse maggiore del padre nostro Abraamo il quale è morto? Anche i profeti sono morti; chi pretendi di essere?»

Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died and the early preachers died. Who do You think You are?”

54 G esù rispose: «Se io glorifico me stesso, la mia gloria è nulla; chi mi glorifica è il Padre mio, del quale voi dite: “È nostro Dio!”

Jesus said, “If I honor Myself, My honor would be worth nothing. My Father honors Me. You say He is your God.

55 e non l’avete conosciuto; ma io lo conosco, e se dicessi di non conoscerlo sarei un bugiardo come voi; ma io lo conosco e osservo la sua parola.

You have never known Him, but I know Him. If I said I did not know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know the Father and obey His Word.

56 A braamo, vostro padre, ha gioito nell’attesa di vedere il mio giorno; e l’ha visto, e se n’è rallegrato».

Your father Abraham was glad that he was to see My coming. He saw it and was happy.”

57 I Giudei gli dissero: «Tu non hai ancora cinquant’anni e hai visto Abraamo?»

The Jews said to Jesus, “You are not even fifty years old. How could you have seen Abraham?”

58 G esù disse loro: «In verità, in verità vi dico: prima che Abraamo fosse nato, io sono ».

Jesus said to them, “For sure, I tell you, before Abraham was born, I was and am and always will be!”

59 A llora essi presero delle pietre per tirargliele; ma Gesù si nascose e uscì dal tempio.

Then they picked up stones to throw at Him. Jesus hid Himself and left the house of God.
