1 I l Signore continuò a rispondere a Giobbe e disse:

Then the Lord said to Job,

2 « Il censore dell’Onnipotente vuole ancora contendere con lui? Colui che censura Dio ha una risposta a tutto questo?»

“Will one who finds fault not agree with the All-powerful? He who speaks strong words against God, let him answer.”

3 A llora Giobbe rispose al Signore e disse:

Job answered the Lord and said,

4 « Ecco, io sono troppo meschino; che ti potrei rispondere? Io mi metto la mano sulla bocca.

“See, I am not important. What can I answer You? I put my hand on my mouth.

5 H o parlato una volta, ma non riprenderò la parola; due volte, ma non lo farò più». L’ippopotamo e il coccodrillo

I have spoken once, and I cannot answer; even twice, and I have no more to say.”

6 I l Signore allora rispose a Giobbe dalla tempesta e disse:

Then the Lord answered out of the storm, and said,

7 « Cingiti i fianchi come un prode; ti farò delle domande e tu insegnami!

“Get ready like a man. I will ask you, and you answer Me.

8 V uoi proprio annullare il mio giudizio? Condannare me per giustificare te stesso?

Will you say what I decide is wrong? Will you say that I have done wrong, that you may be made right?

9 H ai un braccio pari a quello di Dio, o una voce che tuoni come la sua?

Do you have an arm like God? Can you thunder with a voice like His?

10 S uvvia, adòrnati di maestà, di grandezza, rivèstiti di splendore, di magnificenza!

“Dress yourself with shining-greatness and great power. Cover yourself with honor and greatness.

11 D a’ libero sfogo ai furori della tua ira; scruta tutti i superbi e abbassali!

Pour out your anger that is flowing over. Look on everyone who is proud, and put him to shame.

12 S cruta tutti i superbi e umiliali! Schiaccia gli empi dovunque stanno!

Look on everyone who is proud, and bring him down. Crush the sinful where they stand.

13 S eppelliscili tutti assieme nella polvere, copri di bende la loro faccia nel buio della tomba!

Hide them all in the dust together. Shut them up in the hidden place.

14 A llora anch’io ti loderò, perché la tua destra ti avrà dato la vittoria.

Then I will also tell you that your own right hand can save you.

15 « Guarda l’ippopotamo che ho fatto al pari di te; esso mangia l’erba come il bue.

“See now the hippopotamus, which I made as well as you. He eats grass like an ox.

16 E cco, la sua forza è nei suoi lombi, il suo vigore nei muscoli del ventre.

See, his strength is in his body. His power is in his stomach.

17 S tende rigida come un cedro la coda; i nervi delle sue cosce sono intrecciati insieme.

He moves his tail like a cedar tree. His legs are made very strong.

18 L e sue ossa sono tubi di bronzo; le sue membra, sbarre di ferro.

His bones are like brass. His legs are like pieces of iron.

19 E sso è il capolavoro di Dio; colui che lo fece l’ha fornito di falce,

“He is the first of the works of God. Let his maker bring him his sword.

20 p erché i monti gli producono la pastura; là tutte le bestie dei campi gli scherzano intorno.

For sure the mountains bring food to him where all the animals of the field play.

21 S i sdraia sotto i loti, nel folto dei canneti, in mezzo alle paludi.

He lies down under the lotus plants, hidden in the high river grass.

22 I loti lo coprono della loro ombra, i salici del torrente lo circondano.

He lies in the shadow of the lotus plants, with the willow trees of the river around him.

23 S traripi pure il fiume, esso non trema; rimane calmo, anche se avesse un Giordano alla gola.

If a river flows over, he is not afraid. He is sure of himself even if the Jordan rushes against his mouth.

24 P otrebbe qualcuno impadronirsene assalendolo di fronte, o prenderlo con le reti per forargli il naso?

Can anyone take him when he is watching? Can anyone catch him and put a ring in his nose?
