1 E cco la parola che il Signore pronunciò riguardo a Babilonia, riguardo al paese dei Caldei, per mezzo del profeta Geremia:

The word which the Lord spoke about Babylon, the land of the Babylonians, through Jeremiah the man of God:

2 « Annunciatelo fra le nazioni, proclamatelo, issate una bandiera, proclamatelo, non tenetelo nascosto! Dite: “Babilonia è presa! Bel è coperto di vergogna, Merodac è infranto! Le sue immagini sono coperte di vergogna; i suoi idoli, infranti!”

“Make it known among the nations. Lift up a flag and make it known. Do not hide it, but say, ‘Babylon has been taken. Bel has been put to shame. Marduk has been broken down. Her objects of worship have been put to shame. Her false gods have been broken down.’

3 I nfatti dal settentrione marcia contro di lei una nazione che ne ridurrà il paese in un deserto e non vi sarà più nessuno che abiti in lei; uomini e bestie fuggiranno, se ne andranno.

For a nation has come up against her from the north. It will make her land an empty waste, and no one will live in it. Both man and animal will run away.

4 I n quei giorni, in quel tempo», dice il Signore, «i figli d’Israele e i figli di Giuda torneranno insieme; cammineranno piangendo, cercheranno il Signore, il loro Dio.

“In those days and at that time,” says the Lord, “the sons of Israel will come, together with the sons of Judah. They will cry as they come, and will be looking for the Lord their God.

5 D omanderanno qual è la via di Sion, volgeranno le loro facce in direzione d’essa e diranno: “Venite, unitevi al Signore con un patto eterno, che non si dimentichi più!”

They will ask the way to Zion, with faces turned toward it, saying, ‘Come, let us join ourselves to the Lord in an agreement that lasts forever, one that will never be forgotten.’

6 I l mio popolo era un gregge di pecore smarrite; i loro pastori le avevano sviate sui monti dell’infedeltà; esse andavano di monte in colle, avevano dimenticato il luogo del loro riposo.

“My people have become lost sheep. Their shepherds have led them the wrong way. They have made them turn away on the mountains. They have gone from mountain to hill and have forgotten their resting place.

7 T utti quelli che le trovavano, le divoravano; i loro nemici dicevano: “Noi non siamo colpevoli, poiché essi hanno peccato contro il Signore! Territorio di giustizia e speranza dei loro padri è il Signore ”.

All who found them have destroyed them. Those who hate them have said, ‘We are not guilty, for they have sinned against the Lord, their true resting place Who is right and good, the hope of their fathers.’

8 F uggite di mezzo a Babilonia, uscite dal paese dei Caldei, siate come dei capri davanti al gregge!

Run out of Babylon. Go from the land of the Babylonians. Be like male goats that go before the flock.

9 P oiché, ecco, io suscito e faccio marciare contro Babilonia una moltitudine di grandi nazioni dal paese del settentrione; esse si schiereranno contro di lei e da quel lato sarà conquistata. Le loro frecce sono come quelle di un valente arciere; nessuna di esse ritorna a vuoto.

For I am going to raise up and bring against Babylon a group of great nations from the land of the north. They will come ready for battle against her, and she will be taken. Their arrows will be like an able soldier who does not return with empty hands.

10 L a Caldea sarà saccheggiata; tutti quelli che la saccheggeranno saranno saziati», dice il Signore.

Babylon will become a prize of war. All who take things from her will have enough,” says the Lord. Babylon Is Punished

11 « Sì, gioite, sì, esultate, voi che avete saccheggiato la mia eredità; sì, saltate come una giovenca che trebbia il grano, nitrite come forti destrieri!

“You are glad and full of joy, O you who take what belongs to My people. You play around like a young cow in grain, and sound like strong horses. Because of this,

12 V ostra madre è tutta coperta di vergogna, colei che vi ha partoriti, arrossisce; ecco, essa è l’ultima delle nazioni, un deserto, una terra arida, una solitudine.

your mother will be very ashamed. She who gave birth to you will be put to shame. She will be the least of the nations, a wilderness, a waste, and a desert.

13 A causa dell’ira del Signore non sarà più abitata, sarà una completa solitudine; chiunque passerà presso Babilonia rimarrà stupito e fischierà per tutte le sue piaghe.

Because of the Lord’s anger no people will live there. She will be left with no people. Everyone who passes by Babylon will be surprised, and will make fun of her because of her sores.

14 S chieratevi contro Babilonia tutto intorno, o voi tutti che tirate d’arco! Tirate contro di lei, non risparmiate le frecce! poiché essa ha peccato contro il Signore.

Come up for battle against Babylon on every side, all you who use the bow. Shoot at her. Do not save any of your arrows, for she has sinned against the Lord.

15 A lzate contro di lei il grido di guerra, tutto intorno; essa si arrende; le sue colonne cadono, le sue mura crollano, perché questa è la vendetta del Signore! Vendicatevi di lei! Comportatevi con lei come essa si è comportata!

Raise your battle cry against her on every side. She has given herself up. Her strong pillars have fallen. Her walls have been torn down. Since this is the punishment of the Lord, punish her. Do to her as she has done to others.

16 S terminate da Babilonia colui che semina e colui che maneggia la falce al tempo della mietitura. Per scampare alla spada micidiale ritorni ciascuno al suo popolo, fugga ciascuno verso il proprio paese!

Cut off from Babylon the one who plants seeds and the one who cuts the grain at gathering time. Because of the sword of the one who makes it hard for them, everyone will return to his own people. Each one will run to his own land. Israel Is Like a Flock of Sheep

17 I sraele è una pecora smarrita, a cui i leoni hanno dato la caccia; il re d’Assiria, per primo, l’ha divorata, e quest’ultimo, Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, le ha frantumato le ossa».

“Israel is like sheep sent everywhere, driven away by lions. The first one who destroyed Israel was the king of Assyria. And the last one who has broken his bones is Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.

18 P erciò così parla il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele: «Ecco, io punirò il re di Babilonia e il suo paese, come ho punito il re d’Assiria.

So the Lord of All, the God of Israel, says: ‘I am going to punish the king of Babylon and his land, just as I punished the king of Assyria.

19 R icondurrò Israele ai suoi pascoli; egli pascolerà sul Carmelo e in Basan, si sazierà sui colli di Efraim e in Galaad.

I will return Israel to his field, and he will feed on Carmel and Bashan. And his desire will be filled in the hill country of Ephraim and Gilead.

20 I n quei giorni, in quel tempo», dice il Signore, «si cercherà l’iniquità d’Israele, ma essa non sarà più, si cercheranno i peccati di Giuda, ma non si troveranno; poiché io perdonerò a quelli che avrò lasciati come residuo.

In those days and at that time,’ says the Lord, ‘sin will be looked for in Israel, but there will be none. And sin will be looked for in Judah, but it will not be found. For I will forgive those whom I allow to return.’ Words about Babylon

21 M arcia contro il paese di Merataim e contro gli abitanti di Pecod! Inseguili con la spada, votali allo sterminio», dice il Signore, «e fa’ esattamente come io ti ho comandato!

“Go up against the land of Merathaim, and against the people of Pekod. Kill and destroy all of them,” says the Lord, “and do all that I have told you.

22 S i ode nel paese un grido di guerra, e grande è il disastro.

The noise of battle is in the land, and much is destroyed.

23 C ome mai si è rotto, si è spezzato il martello di tutta la terra? Come mai Babilonia è diventata una desolazione fra le nazioni?

How the strong one of the whole earth has been cut off and broken! Babylon has become a complete waste among the nations!

24 I o ti ho teso un laccio e tu, Babilonia, vi sei stata presa senza che te ne accorgessi; sei stata trovata e fermata, perché ti sei messa in guerra contro il Signore.

I set a trap for you, and you were caught, O Babylon, and you did not know it. You have been found and caught, because you have fought against the Lord.”

25 I l Signore ha aperto la sua armeria, ha tirato fuori le armi della sua indignazione; poiché questa è un’opera che il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, ha da compiere nel paese dei Caldei.

The Lord has opened His store-house and has brought out the swords of His anger. For the Lord, the God of All, has work to do in the land of the Babylonians.

26 V enite contro di lei da tutte le parti, aprite i suoi granai, ammucchiatela come tante mannelle, votatela allo sterminio, che nulla ne resti!

Come to her from the farthest land. Open her store-houses. Gather her up like grain, and destroy all of her. Let nothing be left of her.

27 U ccidete tutti i suoi tori, fateli scendere al macello! Guai a loro! poiché il loro giorno è giunto, il giorno della loro punizione.

Kill all her young bulls. Let them go down to be killed. It is bad for them, for their day has come, the time of their punishment.

28 S i ode la voce di quelli che fuggono, che scampano dal paese di Babilonia per annunciare a Sion la vendetta del Signore, del nostro Dio, la vendetta del suo tempio.

Listen! They are running from the land of Babylon to tell in Zion about the punishment of the Lord our God. They are telling how the Lord punishes those who destroyed His house of worship.

29 C onvocate contro Babilonia gli arcieri, tutti quelli che tirano d’arco; accampatevi contro di lei tutto intorno, nessuno ne scampi. Rendetele secondo le sue opere, fate interamente a lei come essa ha fatto; poiché essa è stata arrogante contro il Signore, contro il Santo d’Israele.

“Call all those who use the bow to fight against Babylon. Gather around her on every side. Let no one get away. Pay her back for what she did. Do to her all that she has done. For she has been proud against the Lord, against the Holy One of Israel.

30 P erciò i suoi giovani cadranno nelle sue piazze, tutti i suoi uomini di guerra periranno in quel giorno», dice il Signore.

So her young men will fall in her streets. And all her men of war will be made quiet in that day,” says the Lord.

31 « Eccomi a te, o arrogante», dice il Signore, Dio degli eserciti; «poiché il tuo giorno è giunto, il tempo della tua punizione.

“See, I am against you, O proud one,” says the Lord God of All. “For your day has come, the time when I will punish you.

32 L ’arrogante vacillerà, cadrà e non vi sarà chi lo rialzi; io appiccherò il fuoco alle sue città, esso divorerà tutti i suoi dintorni».

The proud one will trip and fall with no one to help him up. I will set fire to his cities, and it will burn up all that is around him.”

33 C osì parla il Signore degli eserciti: «I figli d’Israele e i figli di Giuda sono oppressi insieme; tutti quelli che li hanno deportati li tengono e rifiutano di lasciarli andare.

The Lord of All says, “The sons of Israel and the sons of Judah are troubled and are held under a bad power. All who took them away in chains have held on to them. They have not been willing to let them go.

34 I l loro vendicatore è forte, si chiama Signore degli eserciti; certo egli difenderà la loro causa, dando riposo alla terra e gettando lo scompiglio fra gli abitanti di Babilonia.

The One Who saves and makes them free is strong. The Lord of All is His name. He will work hard for their cause, so that He may give rest to the land. But He will not give rest to the people of Babylon.

35 L a spada è sospesa sopra i Caldei», dice il Signore, «sopra gli abitanti di Babilonia, sui suoi capi e sui suoi saggi.

A sword is against the Babylonians,” says the Lord, “and against the people of Babylon, and against her leaders and her wise men!

36 L a spada è sospesa sopra i millantatori, che risulteranno insensati; la spada è sospesa sopra i suoi prodi, che saranno atterriti.

A sword is against her religious leaders who are false and lie. They will become fools! A sword is against her strong men, and they will be filled with fear!

37 L a spada è sospesa sopra i suoi cavalli, i suoi carri, sopra tutta l’accozzaglia di gente che è in mezzo a lei, la quale diventerà come tante donne; la spada è sospesa sopra i suoi tesori, che saranno saccheggiati.

A sword is against her horses and war-wagons, and against all the soldiers from other lands who are with her! They will become like women! A sword is against her riches, and they will be taken!

38 L a siccità è sospesa sopra le sue acque, che saranno prosciugate; poiché è un paese d’immagini scolpite, vanno in delirio per quegli spauracchi dei loro idoli.

A time of no rain and her waters will be dried up! For it is a land of false gods. They are wild over false gods.

39 P erciò gli animali del deserto, con gli sciacalli, l’abiteranno, e vi si stabiliranno gli struzzi; nessuno vi abiterà più per sempre, non sarà più popolata di generazione in generazione.

So the desert animals will live there together with the wild dogs. And ostriches also will live in it. Never again will people live there.

40 C ome avvenne quando Dio distrusse Sodoma, Gomorra e le città circostanti», dice il Signore, «nessuno più vi abiterà, non vi risiederà più nessun figlio d’uomo.

As when God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities,” says the Lord, “no man will live there. And no man will stay there.

41 E cco, un popolo viene dal settentrione; una grande nazione e molti re sorgono dalle estremità della terra.

“See, a nation is coming from the north. A great nation and many kings are moving from the farthest parts of the earth.

42 E ssi impugnano l’arco e la freccia, sono crudeli e non hanno pietà; la loro voce è come il muggito del mare e montano cavalli. Sono pronti a combattere come un solo guerriero, contro di te, o figlia di Babilonia!

They take hold of their bow and spear. They fight without pity. Their voice sounds like the sea. And they ride on horses, dressed ready for battle against you, O people of Babylon.

43 I l re di Babilonia ne ode la fama e le sue mani diventano fiacche; l’angoscia lo coglie, un dolore come di donna che partorisce.

The king of Babylon has heard the news about them, and his hands hang without strength. Suffering has taken hold of him, like the pain of a woman giving birth.

44 E cco, egli sale come un leone dalle rive lussureggianti del Giordano contro il forte territorio; io ne farò fuggire all’improvviso gli abitanti e stabilirò su di esso colui che io ho scelto. Poiché chi è simile a me? Chi mi ordinerà di comparire in giudizio? Qual è il pastore che possa starmi di fronte?»

“One will come up like a lion from the trees by the Jordan to rich grass fields. All at once I will make the people run away from Babylon. And I will make whoever I choose to rule over it. For who is like Me? Who will call Me into court? What shepherd can stand before Me?”

45 P erciò ascoltate il disegno che il Signore ha concepito contro Babilonia, i pensieri che medita contro il paese dei Caldei! Certo saranno trascinati via come i più piccoli del gregge; certo il loro territorio sarà devastato.

So hear the plan which the Lord has made against Babylon. Listen to His plans which He has made against the land of the Babylonians. Even the little ones of the flock will be taken away. He will make their fields an empty waste because of them.

46 A l rumore della conquista di Babilonia trema la terra e se ne ode il grido fra le nazioni.

At the cry, “Babylon has been taken!” the earth will shake, and the cry will be heard among the nations.
