1 O r avvenne che, dopo quel flagello, il Signore disse a Mosè e a Eleazar, figlio del sacerdote Aaronne:

After the very bad disease came on the people because of Israel’s sin, the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar the son of Aaron the religious leader,

2 « Fate il censimento di tutta la comunità dei figli d’Israele, dall’età di vent’anni in su, secondo le loro famiglie, di tutti quelli che in Israele possono andare alla guerra».

“Add the numbers of all the people of Israel who are twenty years old and older, by their fathers’ houses. Number whoever in Israel is able to go to war.”

3 M osè e il sacerdote Eleazar parlarono loro nelle pianure di Moab presso il Giordano di fronte a Gerico e dissero:

So Moses and Eleazar the religious leader said to the people in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho,

4 « Si faccia il censimento di quelli che uscirono dal paese d’Egitto, dall’età di vent’anni in su, come il Signore ha ordinato a Mosè e ai figli d’Israele».

“Number the people who are twenty years old and older, as the Lord has told Moses.” Now these were the sons of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt.

The Lord said to Moses,

53 « Il paese sarà diviso tra di loro, per essere loro proprietà, secondo il numero delle persone.

“The land will be divided among these people by the number of names.

54 A quelli che sono in maggior numero darai in possesso una porzione maggiore; a quelli che sono in minor numero darai una porzione minore; si darà a ciascuno la sua porzione secondo il censimento.

Give more land to the larger group. Give less land to the smaller group. Each family should be given land by the number of its people.

55 M a la spartizione del paese sarà fatta a sorte; essi riceveranno la rispettiva proprietà secondo i nomi delle tribù paterne.

But the land should be divided by drawing names. They will receive their land by the names of the families of their fathers.

56 L a spartizione delle proprietà sarà fatta a sorte fra quelli che sono in maggior numero e quelli che sono in numero minore».

The land will be divided between the larger and smaller groups by the names that are drawn.”

The number of all of their males a month old and older was 23, 000. For they were not numbered among the people of Israel, because no land was given to them among the people of Israel.
