1 « Ha una miniera l’argento, e l’oro un luogo dove lo si affina.

“For sure there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is made pure.

2 I l ferro si cava dal suolo, e la pietra fusa dà il rame.

Iron is taken out of the earth. And copper is melted from the rock.

3 L ’uomo ha posto fine alle tenebre, egli esplora i più profondi recessi per trovare le pietre che sono nel buio, nell’ombra di morte.

Man looks into the deepest darkness. And he goes out to the farthest part of the earth to look for rocks in the dark places.

4 S cava un pozzo lontano dall’abitato; il piede più non serve a quelli che vi lavorano; sono sospesi, oscillano lontano dai mortali.

Men break open deep holes far from where people live, forgotten by travelers. In the holes they hang and move from side to side far from men.

5 D alla terra esce il pane, ma, nelle sue viscere, è sconvolta come dal fuoco.

As for the earth, out of it comes food. But below, it is turned up as fire.

6 L e sue rocce sono la sede dello zaffiro e vi si trova la polvere d’oro.

Sapphires come from its rocks and its dust has gold.

7 L ’uccello rapace non conosce il sentiero che vi conduce, né l’ha mai scorto l’occhio del falco.

No bird who eats meat knows that path. The falcon’s eye has not seen it.

8 L e fiere superbe non vi hanno messo piede, il leone non c’è mai passato.

The proud animals have not stepped on it. The strong lion has not passed over it.

9 L ’uomo stende la mano sul granito, rovescia dalle radici le montagne.

Man puts his hand on the hard rock. He turns the mountains over at its base.

10 P ratica trafori dentro le rocce e l’occhio suo scorge quanto c’è di prezioso.

He makes a path through the rocks, and his eyes see everything of much worth.

11 F rena le acque perché non gemano e le cose nascoste trae fuori alla luce.

He stops rivers from flowing. And he brings to light what is hidden.

12 M a la saggezza, dove trovarla? Dov’è il luogo dell’intelligenza?

“But where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?

13 L ’uomo non ne sa la via, non la si trova sulla terra dei viventi.

Man does not know its worth, and it is not found in the land of the living.

14 L ’abisso dice: “Non è in me”; il mare dice: “Non sta da me”.

The deep waters say, ‘It is not in me.’ The sea says, ‘It is not with me.’

15 N on la si ottiene in cambio d’oro, né la si compra a peso d’argento.

Pure gold cannot be traded for it and it cannot be bought with silver.

16 N on la si acquista con l’oro di Ofir, con l’ònice prezioso e con lo zaffiro.

It cannot be compared in worth to the gold of Ophir, onyx of much worth, or sapphire.

17 L ’oro e il vetro non reggono al suo confronto, non la si dà in cambio di vasi d’oro fino.

Gold or glass cannot be compared to it in worth and it cannot be traded for objects of fine gold.

18 N on si parli di corallo, di cristallo; la saggezza vale più delle perle.

There is no need to say anything about coral or crystal because wisdom cannot be paid for with rubies.

19 I l topazio d’Etiopia non può starle a confronto, l’oro puro non ne controbilancia il valore.

The topaz of Ethiopia cannot be compared to it in worth and it cannot be compared with the worth of pure gold.

20 D a dove viene dunque la saggezza? Dov’è il luogo dell’intelligenza?

Where then does wisdom come from? Where is the place of understanding?

21 E ssa è nascosta agli occhi di ogni vivente, è celata agli uccelli del cielo.

It is hidden from the eyes of all living. It is hidden from the birds of the sky.

22 L ’abisso e la morte dicono: “Ne abbiamo avuto qualche sentore”.

The Place That Destroys and Death say, ‘We have only heard about it with our ears.’

23 D io solo conosce la via che vi conduce, egli solo sa il luogo dove risiede,

“God understands the way to wisdom, and He knows its place.

24 p erché il suo sguardo giunge fino alle estremità della terra, perch’egli vede tutto quello che è sotto i cieli.

For He looks to the ends of the earth, and sees everything under the heavens.

25 Q uando regolò il peso del vento e fissò la misura delle acque,

He gave weight to the wind. He decided how much water would be in the sea.

26 q uando diede una legge alla pioggia e tracciò la strada al lampo dei tuoni,

He decided how much rain would fall, and the path for the lightning.

27 a llora la vide e la rivelò, la stabilì e anche l’investigò.

Then He saw wisdom and made it known. He made it last, and found out all about it.

28 E disse all’uomo: “Ecco, temere il Signore, questa è saggezza, fuggire il male è intelligenza!”».

And He said to man, ‘See, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. And to turn away from sin is understanding.’”
