1 C u siguranţă, argintul are o mină din care este scos, iar aurul are un loc unde este curăţit.

“For sure there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is made pure.

2 F ierul este luat din pământ şi arama este scoasă din minereu.

Iron is taken out of the earth. And copper is melted from the rock.

3 O mul pune capăt întunericului şi caută până în locurile cele mai adânci după minereurile ascunse în cel mai negru întuneric.

Man looks into the deepest darkness. And he goes out to the farthest part of the earth to look for rocks in the dark places.

4 E l sapă un puţ departe de locuinţa oamenilor, în locuri necălcate de piciorul omului; el stă atârnat şi se clatină, departe de oameni.

Men break open deep holes far from where people live, forgotten by travelers. In the holes they hang and move from side to side far from men.

5 P ământul din care vine hrana este răscolit pe dedesubt ca de foc.

As for the earth, out of it comes food. But below, it is turned up as fire.

6 S afirul iese din pietrele lui şi colbul lui are pulbere de aur.

Sapphires come from its rocks and its dust has gold.

7 N ici o pasăre de pradă nu ştie acea cărare ascunsă, nici ochiul şoimului n-a văzut-o.

No bird who eats meat knows that path. The falcon’s eye has not seen it.

8 N ici fiarele cele mai mândre n-au călcat pe ea, leul n-a trecut niciodată pe acolo.

The proud animals have not stepped on it. The strong lion has not passed over it.

9 O mul pune mâna pe stânca de cremene şi răstoarnă munţii din rădăcini.

Man puts his hand on the hard rock. He turns the mountains over at its base.

10 E l sapă şanţuri în stâncă şi ochii lui îi văd toate bogăţiile.

He makes a path through the rocks, and his eyes see everything of much worth.

11 E l caută izvoarele râurilor şi aduce la lumină lucruri ascunse.

He stops rivers from flowing. And he brings to light what is hidden.

12 D ar unde poate fi găsită înţelepciunea? Unde locuieşte priceperea?

“But where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?

13 O mul nu-i cunoaşte locuinţa; ea nu poate fi găsită pe pământul celor vii.

Man does not know its worth, and it is not found in the land of the living.

14 A dâncul zice: «Nu este în mine!», iar marea zice: «Nu este la mine!»

The deep waters say, ‘It is not in me.’ The sea says, ‘It is not with me.’

15 E a nu se dă în schimbul aurului ales, nici preţul ei nu poate fi cântărit în argint.

Pure gold cannot be traded for it and it cannot be bought with silver.

16 E a nu poate fi cumpărată cu aur de Ofir şi nici cu onix preţios sau cu safir.

It cannot be compared in worth to the gold of Ophir, onyx of much worth, or sapphire.

17 N ici aurul, nici diamantul nu se pot compara cu ea, nici nu poate fi schimbată pe bijuterii de aur.

Gold or glass cannot be compared to it in worth and it cannot be traded for objects of fine gold.

18 C oralul şi cristalul nu merită a fi amintite; preţul înţelepciunii este dincolo de al mărgăritarelor.

There is no need to say anything about coral or crystal because wisdom cannot be paid for with rubies.

19 T opazul de Cuş nu se poate compara cu ea, ea nu poate fi cumpărată cu aur curat.

The topaz of Ethiopia cannot be compared to it in worth and it cannot be compared with the worth of pure gold.

20 D e unde vine atunci înţelepciunea? Unde locuieşte priceperea?

Where then does wisdom come from? Where is the place of understanding?

21 E a este ascunsă de ochii tuturor celor vii, ascunsă chiar şi de păsările cerului.

It is hidden from the eyes of all living. It is hidden from the birds of the sky.

22 L ocul Nimicirii şi Moartea zic: «Am auzit doar vorbindu-se despre ea.»

The Place That Destroys and Death say, ‘We have only heard about it with our ears.’

23 D umnezeu cunoaşte calea spre ea şi doar El ştie unde locuieşte,

“God understands the way to wisdom, and He knows its place.

24 p entru că El se uită până la marginile pământului, vede tot ce se întâmplă sub ceruri.

For He looks to the ends of the earth, and sees everything under the heavens.

25 C ând i-a dat vântului puterea şi a hotărât mărimea apelor,

He gave weight to the wind. He decided how much water would be in the sea.

26 c ând a dat o lege pentru ploaie şi o cărare pentru trăsnet,

He decided how much rain would fall, and the path for the lightning.

27 a tunci s-a uitat la înţelepciune şi a lăudat-o; a aşezat-o şi a încercat-o.

Then He saw wisdom and made it known. He made it last, and found out all about it.

28 A poi i-a zis omului: «Frica de Domnul – acesta este înţelepciune şi depărtarea de rău este pricepere.»“

And He said to man, ‘See, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. And to turn away from sin is understanding.’”
