1 C ând Sanbalat a auzit că reconstruim zidul, s-a mâniat şi s-a supărat foarte tare. I-a batjocorit pe iudei,

When Sanballat heard that we were building the wall again, he became very angry. He was filled with anger and he made fun of the Jews.

2 z icând rudelor sale şi oştirii Samariei: – Ce fac amărâţii aceştia de iudei? Vor reface ei zidul ? Vor aduce ei jertfe? Vor isprăvi ei vreodată? Vor da ei viaţă unor pietre acoperite de grămezi de moloz şi arse de foc ?

He said to his brothers and the rich men of Samaria, “What are these weak Jews doing? Are they going to build things again for themselves? Will they give gifts on the altar in worship? Will they finish in a day? Will they get good stones for building from the dust, seeing they are burned?”

3 A monitul Tobia, care era în preajma lui, a zis: – Şi chiar dacă zidesc, până şi o vulpe, dacă se va sui pe el, le va putea dărâma zidul lor de piatră!

Tobiah the Ammonite was near him and said, “If a fox would jump on what they build, he would break their stone wall down!”

4 „ Ascultă -ne, Dumnezeul nostru, căci suntem dispreţuiţi! Fă să cadă jignirile lor asupra capului lor şi dă-i pradă unei ţări în care să fie captivi!

Hear, O our God, how we are hated! Return their shame on their own heads. Let them be taken as servants to a strange land.

5 N u le acoperi vina şi nu le şterge păcatele dinaintea Ta, căci i-au jignit pe cei ce zidesc!“

Do not forgive their sin. Do not let their sin be covered from Your eyes. For they have made much fun of the builders.

6 A m continuat să reconstruim zidul şi l-am ridicat până la jumătate din înălţimea lui, iar poporul lucra cu inimă.

But we built the wall, and the whole wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.

7 C ând Sanbalat, Tobia, arabii, amoniţii şi aşdodiţii au auzit că restaurarea zidurilor Ierusalimului avansează şi că spărturile începeau să fie astupate, s-au mâniat foarte tare.

When Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the work of building the walls of Jerusalem went on, and that the broken places began to be closed, they were very angry.

8 S -au aliat cu toţii ca să vină să lupte împotriva Ierusalimului şi să-i facă stricăciuni.

And all of them made plans together to come and fight against Jerusalem and cause trouble in it.

9 N e-am rugat Dumnezeului nostru şi am pus o strajă ca să ne apere de ei zi şi noapte.

But we prayed to our God because of them. And we had men watching for them day and night.

10 Î nsă cei din Iuda ziceau: „Puterea cărăuşilor slăbeşte, iar molozul este mult. Nu vom putea să reconstruim zidul!“

So in Judah it was said, “Those who carry the loads are becoming weaker, and there is much dust. We are not able to work on the wall.”

11 T otodată duşmanii noştri ziceau: „Nu vor şti şi nu vor vedea nimic până în clipa când vom ajunge în mijlocul lor! Îi vom ucide şi vom face astfel să înceteze lucrarea!“

Those who hated us said, “They will not know it or see us until we are among them, kill them, and stop the work.”

12 I udeii care locuiau în preajma lor au venit de zece ori şi ne-au înştiinţat despre toate locurile prin care aceştia urmau să vină împotriva noastră.

When the Jews who lived by them came, they told us ten times, “They will come up against us from all the places where they live.”

13 P rin urmare, i-am pus pe unii din popor de-a lungul porţiunii mai joase a zidului, în locurile libere din spatele lui, aşezându-i, potrivit clanurilor lor, cu săbiile, suliţele şi arcurile în mâini.

So I put men in the lowest parts of the places behind the wall, in the open places. I put the people in place by their families with their swords, spears and bows.

14 D upă ce m-am uitat la toate acestea, m-am ridicat şi le-am zis nobililor, dregătorilor şi celorlalţi din popor astfel: „Nu vă temeţi de ei! Aduceţi-vă aminte de Stăpânul, Cel Care este mare şi înfricoşător, şi luptaţi pentru rudele voastre, pentru fiii voştri, pentru fiicele voastre, pentru soţiile voastre şi pentru casele voastre.“

When I saw their fear, I got up and said to the rulers and leaders and the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord Who is great and honored with fear. And fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”

15 C ând duşmanii noştri au auzit că am fost înştiinţaţi, Dumnezeu le-a zădărnicit planurile, astfel încât ne-am putut întoarce cu toţii la zid, fiecare la lucrarea lui.

When those who hated us heard that it was known to us, and that God had brought trouble to their plan, then all of us returned to the wall. Each one returned to his work.

16 D in ziua aceea, jumătate din slujitorii mei lucrau, iar cealaltă jumătate dintre ei erau înarmaţi cu suliţe, cu scuturi, cu arcuri şi cu platoşe. Conducătorii se aşezaseră înapoia întregii case a lui Iuda,

From that day on, half of my servants did the work while half of them held the spears, battle-coverings, bows, and battle-clothes. And the captains stood behind the whole house of Judah.

17 c are reconstruia zidul. Cei ce purtau poverile, cu o mână lucrau, iar cu cealaltă ţineau arma.

Those who were building the wall and those who carried loads did their work with one hand, and held something to fight with in the other hand.

18 F iecare ziditor îşi avea sabia încinsă la brâu în timp ce zidea. Cel ce suna din trâmbiţă stătea lângă mine.

Each builder wore his sword at his side as he built. The man who blew the horn stood beside me.

19 L e-am zis nobililor, dregătorilor şi celorlalţi din popor: „Lucrarea este mare şi întinsă, iar noi suntem împrăştiaţi pe zid, departe unii de ceilalţi.

I said to the rulers, leaders, and the rest of the people, “There is very much work to do, and we are separated on the wall far from one another.

20 Î n locul în care veţi auzi sunetul trâmbiţei, acolo să vă alăturaţi nouă. Dumnezeul nostru va lupta pentru noi!“

In whatever place you hear the sound of the horn, gather together to us there. Our God will fight for us.”

21 A m continuat să facem lucrarea cu jumătate dintre ei înarmaţi cu suliţe, din zorii zilei până la ivirea stelelor.

So we did the work with half of them holding spears from sunrise until the stars came out.

22 T ot în perioada aceea am mai zis poporului: „Fiecare om să înnopteze la Ierusalim împreună cu sluga lui, ca să ne slujească drept strajă noaptea, iar ziua să poată lucra!“

At that time I also said to the people, “Let every man and his servant spend the night within Jerusalem so they may watch for us during the night and work during the day.”

23 Ş i nu ne-am mai dezbrăcat de haine, nici eu, nici rudele mele, nici slujitorii mei şi nici bărbaţii care stăteau de strajă înapoia mea. Iar când mergeau la apă, fiecare avea arma la el.

So none of us, I, my brothers, my servants, or the soldiers who followed me, took off our clothes. Each man kept something to fight with in his hand, even when he went to wash.
