1 Î n timp ce Ezra se ruga şi se destăinuia plângând şi stând cu capul plecat înaintea Casei lui Dumnezeu, s-a strâns la el o mare mulţime de bărbaţi, de femei şi de copii din Israel. Şi poporul a început astfel să plângă şi el cu amar.

Ezra was praying and telling their sins, and crying and lying on the ground before the house of God. Many people, men, women and children, gathered around him from Israel, for the people cried with many tears.

2 A tunci Şecania, fiul lui Iehiel, dintre urmaşii lui Elam, a luat cuvântul şi i-a zis lui Ezra: „I-am fost necredincioşi Dumnezeului nostru, căsătorindu-ne cu femei străine, care fac parte din popoarele ţării! Dar, în ciuda acestui lucru, încă mai există speranţă pentru Israel!

Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, said to Ezra, “We have not been faithful to our God. We have married strange women from the people of the land. But even so, there is hope for Israel.

3 S ă încheiem acum un legământ cu Dumnezeul nostru, angajându-ne să izgonim toate femeile acestea şi pe cei ce li s-au născut, potrivit cu sfatul stăpânului meu şi a celor ce se tem de porunca Dumnezeului nostru. Să se facă după Lege!

So let us make an agreement with our God to put away all the wives and their children. Let this be done by the wise words of my lord and of those who shake with fear at the Word of our God. And let it be done by the Law.

4 R idică-te, căci este responsabilitatea ta, iar noi vom fi alături de tine! Fii tare şi lucrează!“

Get up, for this is your duty, but we will be with you. Have strength of heart and do it.”

5 E zra s-a ridicat şi le-a pus pe căpeteniile preoţilor şi ale leviţilor şi pe tot poporul lui Israel să jure că vor face ce s-a hotărât. Şi ei au jurat.

So Ezra got up and made the head religious leaders, the Levites and all Israel promise that they would do as he had said, and they promised.

6 E zra s-a retras dinaintea Casei lui Dumnezeu şi s-a dus în odaia lui Iehohanan, fiul lui Eliaşib. Când a intrat acolo, pâine nu a mâncat şi apă nu a băut, căci a continuat să bocească necredincioşia celor ce fuseseră în captivitate.

Then Ezra got up from before the house of God and went into the room of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib. He went there, but he did not eat bread or drink water, for he was filled with sorrow because the people who returned had not been faithful to God.

7 A u răspândit în Iuda şi în Ierusalim vestea ca toţi cei întorşi din captivitate să se strângă la Ierusalim,

And it was made known to all the Jews who had returned to Judah and Jerusalem that they should gather together at Jerusalem.

8 u rmând ca, potrivit sfatului căpeteniilor şi al celor din sfatul bătrânilor, toţi aceia care nu vor veni în trei zile să fie deposedaţi de toată averea şi să fie separaţi de adunarea celor întorşi din captivitate.

Whoever would not come within three days, as the leaders had said, would have all he owned taken away from him. He would be sent away from the people who had returned from Babylon.

9 Î n trei zile, toţi bărbaţii lui Iuda şi ai lui Beniamin s-au strâns la Ierusalim – era a douăzecea zi a lunii a noua. Tot poporul stătea în piaţeta dinaintea Casei lui Dumnezeu, tremurând din cauza veştii şi din cauza ploii.

So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together at Jerusalem within the three days. It was the twentieth day of the ninth month. All the people sat in the open space before the house of God, shaking because of this trouble and because of much rain.

10 P reotul Ezra s-a ridicat şi le-a zis: – Aţi fost necredincioşi şi v-aţi căsătorit cu femei străine, adăugând astfel la vina lui Israel.

Then Ezra the religious leader stood up and said to them, “You have been sinful and have married wives of strange lands, adding to the guilt of Israel.

11 D aţi slavă acum Domnului, Dumnezeul strămoşilor voştri, şi împliniţi voia Lui! Separaţi-vă de popoarele din ţară şi de soţiile străine!

So now tell your sins to the Lord God of your fathers, and do His will. Separate yourselves from the people of the land and from the strange wives.”

12 T oată adunarea a răspuns cu glas tare: – Vom face precum ne-ai spus!

Then all the people answered with a loud voice, “That is right! We must do as you have said.

13 P oporul însă este numeros, iar vremea este ploioasă şi nu putem sta afară. De altfel, aceasta nu este o treabă de o zi sau două, căci sunt mulţi printre noi care au păcătuit în această privinţă.

But there are many people, and there is much rain. We cannot stand in the open. This cannot be done in one or two days, for we have sinned very much.

14 S ă rămână căpeteniile noastre în locul întregii adunări. Apoi toţi cei din cetăţile noastre care şi-au luat soţii străine să vină la date stabilite împreună cu cei din sfatul bătrânilor şi cu judecătorii cetăţii respective, până se va abate de la noi mânia aprigă a Dumnezeului nostru cu privire la acest lucru.

Let our leaders speak for all the people. Then let all those in our cities who have married strange wives come at certain times, together with the leaders and judges of each city. Let this be done until the anger of our God, because of this sin, is turned away from us.”

15 D oar Ionatan, fiul lui Asael, şi Iahzeia, fiul lui Tikva, au fost împotrivă, ei fiind susţinuţi de Meşulam şi de levitul Şabtai.

Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah were against this, with Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite following them.

16 P rin urmare, cei întorşi din captivitate au făcut cum s-a propus. L-au ales pe preotul Ezra şi au numit căpetenii de familii, potrivit familiilor lor. Aceştia s-au aşezat să cerceteze problema în prima zi a lunii a zecea.

But the other people who had returned from Babylon agreed to do this. Ezra the religious leader chose men who were leaders of family groups for each of their fathers’ houses. Each of them were chosen by name. So they met together on the first day of the tenth month to look into the problem.

17 Î n prima zi a lunii întâi au isprăvit de rezolvat problema în legătură cu toţi bărbaţii care se căsătoriseră cu femei străine. Cei vinovaţi de căsătorii mixte

And by the first day of the first month, they finished finding the names of all the men who had married wives from the other nations.

18 D intre urmaşii preoţilor, iată-i pe cei pe care i-au găsit căsătoriţi cu femei străine: dintre urmaşii lui Iosua, fiul lui Ioţadak, şi dintre fraţii săi: Maaseia, Eliezer, Iarib şi Ghedalia.

Of the sons of the religious leaders who had married strange wives were found the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah.

19 E i s-au înţeles să le alunge pe soţiile lor şi au adus pentru vina lor un berbec din turmă ca jertfă pentru vină.

They promised to put away their wives, and because they were guilty, they gave a ram of the flock for their sin.

20 D intre urmaşii lui Imer: Hanani şi Zebadia;

And there were Hanani and Zebadiah of the sons of Immer,

21 d intre urmaşii lui Harim: Maaseia, Ilie, Şemaia, Iehiel şi Uzia;

and Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah, of the sons of Harim,

22 d intre urmaşii lui Paşhur: Elionai, Maaseia, Ismael, Netanel, Iozabad şi Elasa;

and Elionai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah, of the sons of Pashur.

23 d intre leviţi: Iozabad, Şimei, Chelaia, – numit şi Chelita –, Petahia, Iuda şi Eliezer;

Of the Levites there were Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

24 d intre cântăreţi: Eliaşib; dintre portari: Şalum, Telem şi Uri.

Of the singers there was Eliashib. Of the gate-keepers there were Shallum, Telem, and Uri.

25 D intre ceilalţi din Israel: dintre urmaşii lui Paroş: Ramia, Izia, Malchia, Miyamin, Elazar, Malchia şi Benaia;

Of Israel, there were Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijah, and Benaiah, of the sons of Parosh.

26 d intre urmaşii lui Elam: Matania, Zaharia, Iehiel, Abdi, Ieremot şi Ilie;

There were Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Elijah, of the sons of Elam.

27 d intre urmaşii lui Zatu: Elioenai, Eliaşib, Matania, Ieremot, Zabad şi Aziza;

There were Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza, of the sons of Zattu.

28 d intre urmaşii lui Bebai: Iehohanan, Hanania, Zabai şi Atlai;

There were Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai, of the sons of Bebai.

29 d intre urmaşii lui Bani: Meşulam, Maluh, Adaia, Iaşub, Şeal şi Ieremot;

There were Meshullam, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal, and Jeramoth, of the sons of Bani.

30 d intre urmaşii lui Pahat-Moab: Adna, Chelal, Benaia, Maaseia, Matania, Beţalel, Binui şi Manase;

There were Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui, and Manasseh, of the sons of Pahath-moab.

31 d intre urmaşii lui Harim: Eliezer, Işia, Malchia, Şemaia, Simeon,

Of the sons of Harim, there were Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon,

32 B eniamin, Maluh şi Şemaria;

Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah.

33 d intre urmaşii lui Haşum: Matnai, Matata, Zabad, Elifelet, Ieremai, Manase şi Şimei;

There were Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei, of the sons of Hashum.

34 d intre urmaşii lui Bani: Maadai, Amram, Uel,

Of the sons of Bani, there were Maadai, Amram, Uel,

35 B enaia, Bedia, Cheluhu,

Benaiah, Bedeiah, Cheluhi,

36 V ania, Meremot, Eliaşib,

Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib,

37 M atania, Matnai, Iaasai,

Mattaniah, Mattenai, Jaasu,

And there were Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel, and Benaiah, of the sons of Nebo.

44 T oţi aceştia se căsătoriseră cu femei străine şi unii chiar avuseseră fii cu ele.

All these had married wives of the other nations, and some of the wives had given birth to children.
