1 M ientras Esdras oraba y hacía confesión, llorando y postrándose delante de la casa de Dios, una gran asamblea de Israel, hombres, mujeres y niños se juntó a él; y el pueblo lloraba amargamente.

Ezra was praying and telling their sins, and crying and lying on the ground before the house of God. Many people, men, women and children, gathered around him from Israel, for the people cried with many tears.

2 Y Secanías, hijo de Jehiel, uno de los hijos de Elam, dijo a Esdras: “Hemos sido infieles a nuestro Dios, y nos hemos casado con mujeres extranjeras de los pueblos de esta tierra; pero todavía hay esperanza para Israel a pesar de esto.

Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, said to Ezra, “We have not been faithful to our God. We have married strange women from the people of the land. But even so, there is hope for Israel.

3 H agamos ahora un pacto con nuestro Dios de despedir a todas las mujeres y a sus hijos, conforme al consejo de mi señor y de los que tiemblan ante el mandamiento de nuestro Dios; y que sea hecho conforme a la ley.

So let us make an agreement with our God to put away all the wives and their children. Let this be done by the wise words of my lord and of those who shake with fear at the Word of our God. And let it be done by the Law.

4 L evántate, porque este asunto es tu responsabilidad, pero estaremos contigo; anímate y haz lo.”

Get up, for this is your duty, but we will be with you. Have strength of heart and do it.”

5 E sdras se levantó e hizo jurar a los principales sacerdotes, a los Levitas y a todo Israel que harían conforme a esta propuesta; y ellos lo juraron.

So Ezra got up and made the head religious leaders, the Levites and all Israel promise that they would do as he had said, and they promised.

6 D espués Esdras se levantó de delante de la casa de Dios y entró a la cámara de Johanán, hijo de Eliasib. Aunque entró allí, no comió pan ni bebió agua, porque hacía duelo a causa de la infidelidad de los desterrados.

Then Ezra got up from before the house of God and went into the room of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib. He went there, but he did not eat bread or drink water, for he was filled with sorrow because the people who returned had not been faithful to God.

7 E ntonces hicieron una proclama en Judá y Jerusalén a todos los desterrados para que se reunieran en Jerusalén,

And it was made known to all the Jews who had returned to Judah and Jerusalem that they should gather together at Jerusalem.

8 y a cualquiera que no viniera dentro de tres días, conforme al consejo de los jefes y de los ancianos, le serían confiscadas todas sus posesiones y él mismo sería excluido de la asamblea de los desterrados.

Whoever would not come within three days, as the leaders had said, would have all he owned taken away from him. He would be sent away from the people who had returned from Babylon.

9 S e reunieron, pues, todos los hombres de Judá y Benjamín en Jerusalén dentro de los tres días. Era el mes noveno, el día veinte del mes, y todo el pueblo se sentó en la plaza delante de la casa de Dios, temblando a causa de este asunto y de la intensa lluvia.

So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together at Jerusalem within the three days. It was the twentieth day of the ninth month. All the people sat in the open space before the house of God, shaking because of this trouble and because of much rain.

10 E ntonces se levantó el sacerdote Esdras y les dijo: “Ustedes han sido infieles y se han casado con mujeres extranjeras añadiendo así a la culpa de Israel.

Then Ezra the religious leader stood up and said to them, “You have been sinful and have married wives of strange lands, adding to the guilt of Israel.

11 A hora pues, confiesen al Señor, Dios de sus padres, y hagan Su voluntad; sepárense de los pueblos de esta tierra y de las mujeres extranjeras.”

So now tell your sins to the Lord God of your fathers, and do His will. Separate yourselves from the people of the land and from the strange wives.”

12 T oda la asamblea respondió, y dijo a gran voz: “¡Está bien! Tal como has dicho es nuestro deber cumplirlo.

Then all the people answered with a loud voice, “That is right! We must do as you have said.

13 S ólo que el pueblo es numeroso, y es la temporada de lluvia, y no podemos permanecer afuera. Tampoco se puede hacer todo en un solo día ni en dos, porque hemos pecado en gran manera en este asunto.

But there are many people, and there is much rain. We cannot stand in the open. This cannot be done in one or two days, for we have sinned very much.

14 Q ue nuestros jefes representen toda la asamblea y que todos aquellos en nuestras ciudades que se han casado con mujeres extranjeras vengan en tiempos señalados, junto con los ancianos y jueces de cada ciudad, hasta que la tremenda ira de nuestro Dios a causa de este asunto se aparte de nosotros.”

Let our leaders speak for all the people. Then let all those in our cities who have married strange wives come at certain times, together with the leaders and judges of each city. Let this be done until the anger of our God, because of this sin, is turned away from us.”

15 S olamente Jonatán, hijo de Asael, y Jahazías, hijo de Ticva, se opusieron a esto, con Mesulam y el Levita Sabetai respaldándolos.

Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah were against this, with Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite following them.

16 P ero los desterrados sí lo hicieron. Y el sacerdote Esdras designó a hombres jefes de casas paternas por cada una de sus casas paternas, todos ellos por nombre. Y se reunieron el primer día del mes décimo para investigar el asunto.

But the other people who had returned from Babylon agreed to do this. Ezra the religious leader chose men who were leaders of family groups for each of their fathers’ houses. Each of them were chosen by name. So they met together on the first day of the tenth month to look into the problem.

17 T erminaron de investigar a todos los hombres que se habían casado con mujeres extranjeras el primer día del mes primero.

And by the first day of the first month, they finished finding the names of all the men who had married wives from the other nations.

18 E ntre los hijos de los sacerdotes que se habían casado con mujeres extranjeras se encontraron, de los hijos de Jesúa, hijo de Josadac, y de sus hermanos: Maasías, Eliezer, Jarib y Gedalías.

Of the sons of the religious leaders who had married strange wives were found the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah.

19 ( Ellos juraron despedir a sus mujeres, y siendo culpables, ofrecieron un carnero del rebaño por su delito ).

They promised to put away their wives, and because they were guilty, they gave a ram of the flock for their sin.

20 D e los hijos de Imer: Hananí y Zebadías;

And there were Hanani and Zebadiah of the sons of Immer,

21 d e los hijos de Harim: Maasías, Elías, Semaías, Jehiel y Uzías;

and Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah, of the sons of Harim,

22 d e los hijos de Pasur: Elioenai, Maasías, Ismael, Natanael, Jozabad y Elasa.

and Elionai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah, of the sons of Pashur.

23 E ntre los Levitas: Jozabad, Simei, Kelaía, (es decir, Kelita), Petaías, Judá y Eliezer.

Of the Levites there were Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

24 D e los cantores: Eliasib, y de los porteros: Salum, Telem y Uri.

Of the singers there was Eliashib. Of the gate-keepers there were Shallum, Telem, and Uri.

25 T ambién entre los de Israel: de los hijos de Paros: Ramía, Jezías, Malquías, Mijamín, Eleazar, Malquías y Benaía;

Of Israel, there were Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijah, and Benaiah, of the sons of Parosh.

26 d e los hijos de Elam: Matanías, Zacarías, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremot y Elías;

There were Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Elijah, of the sons of Elam.

27 d e los hijos de Zatu: Elioenai, Eliasib, Matanías, Jeremot, Zabad y Aziza;

There were Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza, of the sons of Zattu.

28 d e los hijos de Bebai: Johanán, Hananías, Zabai y Atlai;

There were Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai, of the sons of Bebai.

29 d e los hijos de Bani: Mesulam, Maluc, Adaía, Jasub, Seal y Ramot;

There were Meshullam, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal, and Jeramoth, of the sons of Bani.

30 d e los hijos de Pahat Moab: Adna, Quelal, Benaía, Maasías, Matanías, Bezalel, Binúi y Manasés;

There were Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui, and Manasseh, of the sons of Pahath-moab.

31 d e los hijos de Harim: Eliezer, Isías, Malquías, Semaías, Simeón,

Of the sons of Harim, there were Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon,

32 B enjamín, Maluc y Semarías;

Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah.

33 d e los hijos de Hasum: Matenai, Matata, Zabad, Elifelet, Jeremai, Manasés y Simei;

There were Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei, of the sons of Hashum.

Of the sons of Bani, there were Maadai, Amram, Uel,

43 d e los hijos de Nebo: Jeiel, Matatías, Zabad, Zebina, Jadau, Joel y Benaía.

And there were Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel, and Benaiah, of the sons of Nebo.

44 T odos éstos se habían casado con mujeres extranjeras, y algunos de ellos tenían mujeres que les habían dado hijos.

All these had married wives of the other nations, and some of the wives had given birth to children.
