1 A braham era viejo, entrado en años; y el Señor había bendecido a Abraham en todo.

Now Abraham was old. He had lived many years. And the Lord had brought good to Abraham in every way.

2 Y Abraham dijo a su siervo, el más viejo de su casa, que era mayordomo de todo lo que poseía: “Te ruego que pongas tu mano debajo de mi muslo,

Abraham said to the oldest servant in his house and the one who took care of all that he owned, “Place your hand under my hip,

3 y te haré jurar por el Señor, Dios de los cielos y Dios de la tierra, que no tomarás mujer para mi hijo de las hijas de los Cananeos, entre los cuales yo habito,

and I will have you promise by the Lord, the God of heaven and earth. Promise that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, who live around me.

4 s ino que irás a mi tierra y a mis parientes, y tomarás mujer para mi hijo Isaac.”

But go to my country and to those of my family. Take a wife for my son Isaac from there.”

5 Y el siervo le dijo: “Tal vez la mujer no quiera seguirme a esta tierra. ¿Debo volver y llevar a su hijo a la tierra de donde usted vino?”

The servant said to Abraham, “What if the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land? Should I take your son to the land you came from?”

6 “ De ningún modo debes llevar allá a mi hijo,” le respondió Abraham.

Abraham said to him, “Make sure that you do not take my son there.

7 “ El Señor, Dios de los cielos, que me tomó de la casa de mi padre y de la tierra donde nací, y que me habló y me juró, diciendo: ‘A tu descendencia daré esta tierra,’ El mandará Su ángel delante de ti, y tomarás de allí mujer para mi hijo.

The Lord, the God of heaven, Who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my birth, spoke to me and promised me. He said, ‘I will give this land to your children and to their children’s children.’ He will send His angel in front of you. And you will take a wife for my son from there.

8 S i la mujer no quiere seguirte, quedarás libre de éste mi juramento. Sólo que no lleves allá a mi hijo.”

But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be free from this promise to me. Only do not take my son there.”

9 E l siervo puso la mano debajo del muslo de Abraham su señor, y le juró sobre este asunto. Rebeca es Escogida

So the servant placed his hand under the hip of Abraham, and he promised to do this.

10 E ntonces el siervo tomó diez camellos de entre los camellos de su señor, y partió con toda clase de bienes de su señor en su mano; se levantó y fue a Mesopotamia, a la ciudad de Nacor.

Then the servant took ten of Abraham’s camels and left. He took with him all kinds of gifts from Abraham. Then he went to the city of Nahor in Mesopotamia.

11 E l siervo hizo que se arrodillaran los camellos fuera de la ciudad, junto al pozo de agua, al atardecer, a la hora en que las mujeres salen por agua,

He made the camels get down on their knees outside the city by the well of water in the evening. It was the time when women go out to get water.

12 y dijo: “Oh Señor, Dios de mi señor Abraham, Te ruego que me des éxito hoy, y que tengas misericordia de mi señor Abraham.

He said, “O Lord, the God of my boss Abraham, let all go well for me today. Show loving-kindness to my boss Abraham.

13 Y o estoy de pie aquí junto a la fuente de agua, y las hijas de los hombres de la ciudad salen para sacar agua.

See, I am standing here by the well of water. And the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to get water.

14 Q ue sea la joven a quien yo diga: ‘Por favor, baje su cántaro para que yo beba,’ y que responda: ‘Beba, y también daré de beber a sus camellos,’ la que Tú has designado para Tu siervo Isaac. Por ello sabré que has mostrado misericordia a mi señor.”

If I say to a girl, ‘Let down your jar so that I may drink,’ and she answers, ‘Drink, and I will give water to your camels also,’ let her be the one whom You have chosen for your servant Isaac. I will know by this that You have shown loving-kindness to my boss.”

15 Y sucedió que antes de haber terminado de hablar, Rebeca, hija de Betuel, hijo de Milca, mujer de Nacor, hermano de Abraham, salió con el cántaro sobre su hombro.

Before he had finished speaking, Rebekah came out, the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah and Nahor, the brother of Abraham. She had a jar on her shoulder.

16 L a joven era muy hermosa, virgen, ningún hombre la había conocido. Bajó ella a la fuente, llenó su cántaro y subió.

The girl was very beautiful and had never lain with a man. She went down to the well, filled her jar and came up.

17 E ntonces el siervo corrió a su encuentro, y le dijo: “Le ruego que me dé a beber un poco de agua de su cántaro.”

Then the servant ran to meet her. He said, “Let me drink a little water from your jar.”

18 “ Beba, señor mío,” le dijo ella. Y enseguida bajó el cántaro a su mano, y le dio de beber.

She said, “Drink, my lord.” And she was quick to lift her jar to her hand and give him a drink.

19 C uando había terminado de darle de beber, dijo: “Sacaré también para sus camellos hasta que hayan terminado de beber.”

When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will get water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.”

20 R ápidamente vació el cántaro en el abrevadero, y corrió otra vez a la fuente para sacar agua, y sacó para todos sus camellos.

She was quick to empty her jar into the animals’ drinking place. Then she ran to the well for more water, and got enough for all his camels.

21 E ntretanto el hombre la observaba en silencio, para saber si el Señor había dado éxito o no a su viaje.

The man was quiet and watched her, waiting to know if the Lord had made all go well or not during his visit.

22 C uando los camellos habían terminado de beber, el hombre tomó un anillo de oro que pesaba medio siclo (5. 7 gramos), y dos brazaletes que pesaban diez siclos (114 gramos) de oro.

When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a heavy gold ring and two heavy gold objects to wear on her arms.

23 Y le preguntó: “¿De quién es hija? Dígame, le ruego, ¿hay en la casa de su padre lugar para hospedarnos?”

He said, “Whose daughter are you? Tell me, is there a place for us to stay in your father’s house?”

24 E lla le respondió: “Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo que Milca dio a Nacor.”

She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah and Nahor.”

25 T ambién le dijo: “Tenemos suficiente paja y forraje, y lugar para hospedarse.”

She also said, “We have both enough straw and food, and a place to stay.”

26 E ntonces el hombre se postró y adoró al Señor,

Then the man bowed low and worshiped the Lord.

27 y dijo: “Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de mi señor Abraham, que no ha dejado de mostrar Su misericordia y Su fidelidad hacia mi señor. El Señor me ha guiado en el camino a la casa de los hermanos de mi señor.” Rebeca Confirma su Elección

He said, “Honor and thanks be to the Lord, the God of my boss Abraham. He has not kept His loving-kindness and His truth from my boss. He has led me in the way to the house of my boss’s brothers.”

28 L a joven corrió y contó estas cosas a los de la casa de su madre.

Then the girl ran and told about all this to those in her mother’s house.

29 R ebeca tenía un hermano que se llamaba Labán, y Labán salió corriendo hacia el hombre a la fuente.

Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban. And Laban ran outside to the man at the well.

30 C uando Labán vio el anillo y los brazaletes en las manos de su hermana, y oyó las palabras de su hermana Rebeca, que le contó: “Esto es lo que el hombre me dijo,” Labán fue al hombre, que estaba con los camellos junto a la fuente,

When he saw the gold objects his sister was wearing, and heard his sister Rebekah saying, “This is what the man said to me,” he went to the man. He saw him standing by the camels at the well.

31 y le dijo: “Entra, bendito del Señor, ¿Por qué estás afuera? Yo he preparado la casa y un lugar para los camellos.”

Laban said, “Come in, you who receive good from the Lord! Why do you stand outside? I have made the house ready, and a place for the camels.”

32 E ntonces el hombre entró en la casa, y Labán descargó los camellos y les dio paja y forraje, y trajo agua para que se lavaran los pies, él y los hombres que estaban con él.

So the man came into the house. Laban took the load off the camels, and gave them straw and food. He got water to wash the feet of Abraham’s servant and the feet of the men who were with him.

33 P ero cuando la comida fue puesta delante de él para que comiera, dijo: “No comeré hasta que haya dicho el propósito de mi viaje.” “Habla,” le dijo Labán.

Then food was set in front of the man to eat. But he said, “I will not eat until I have told you why I came here.” Laban said, “Tell it.”

34 “ Soy siervo de Abraham,” comenzó a decir.

So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant.

35 “ Y el Señor ha bendecido en gran manera a mi señor, que se ha enriquecido. Le ha dado ovejas y vacas, plata y oro, siervos y siervas, camellos y asnos.

And the Lord has brought much good to my boss. He has become rich. The Lord has given him flocks and cattle, silver and gold, men and women servants, and camels and donkeys.

36 S ara, la mujer de mi señor, le dio un hijo a mi señor en su vejez; y mi señor le ha dado a él todo lo que posee.

My boss’s wife Sarah gave birth to my boss’s son when she was very old. And he has given him all he has.

37 “ Mi señor me hizo jurar: ‘No tomarás mujer para mi hijo de entre las hijas de los Cananeos, en cuya tierra habito,

“My boss made me promise, saying, ‘Do not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live.

38 s ino que irás a la casa de mi padre y a mis parientes, y tomarás mujer para mi hijo.’

But go to my father’s house, to those of my family, and take a wife for my son there.’

39 Y o dije a mi señor: ‘Tal vez la mujer no quiera seguirme.’

I said to my owner, ‘What if the woman will not follow me?’

40 Y él me respondió: ‘El Señor, delante de quien he andado, enviará Su ángel contigo para dar éxito a tu viaje, y tomarás mujer para mi hijo de entre mis parientes y de la casa de mi padre.

He said to me, ‘The Lord, Whom I have always obeyed, will send His angel with you to make all go well during your visit there. You will take a wife for my son from those of my family and from my father’s house.

41 E ntonces cuando llegues a mis parientes quedarás libre de mi juramento; y si ellos no te la dan, también quedarás libre de mi juramento.’

Then you will be free from your promise to me. When you come to those of my family, and if they do not give her to you, then you will be free from your promise to me.’

42 “ Hoy llegué a la fuente, y dije: ‘Oh Señor, Dios de mi señor Abraham, si ahora quieres, Tú puedes dar éxito a mi viaje en el cual ando.

“So I came to the well today. I said, ‘O Lord, the God of my boss Abraham, may all go well during my visit here.

43 Y o estoy parado aquí junto a la fuente de agua. Que la doncella que salga a sacar agua, y a quien yo diga: “Le ruego que me dé a beber un poco de agua de su cántaro,”

See, I am standing by the well of water. If I say to the girl who comes out for water, “Let me drink a little water from your jar,”

44 y ella me diga, “Beba, y también sacaré para sus camellos,” que sea ella la mujer que el Señor ha designado para el hijo de mi señor.’

and she says, “You drink, and I will get water for your camels also,” then let her be the woman whom the Lord has chosen for my boss’s son.’

45 “ Antes de que yo hubiera terminado de hablar en mi corazón, Rebeca salió con su cántaro al hombro, y bajó a la fuente y sacó agua, y yo le dije: ‘Le ruego que me dé de beber.’

Before I had finished speaking in my heart, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She went down to the well and got water. I asked her, ‘Let me drink.’

46 Y ella enseguida bajó el cántaro de su hombro, y dijo: ‘Beba, y daré de beber también a sus camellos ’; de modo que bebí, y ella dio de beber también a los camellos.

And she was quick to take down her jar from her shoulder. She said, ‘Drink, and I will give water to your camels also.’ So I drank and she gave water to the camels also.

47 “ Entonces le pregunté: ‘¿De quién es hija?’ Y ella contestó: ‘ Soy hija de Betuel, hijo de Nacor, que le dio a luz Milca ’; y puse el anillo en su nariz, y los brazaletes en sus manos.

Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah and Nahor.’ And I put the gold objects on her nose and arms.

48 Y me postré y adoré al Señor, y bendije al Señor, Dios de mi señor Abraham, que me había guiado por camino verdadero para tomar la hija del pariente de mi señor para su hijo.

Then I bowed low and worshiped the Lord. I gave honor and thanks to the Lord, the God of my boss Abraham. For He had led me in the right way to take the daughter of my boss’s brother for his son.

49 A hora pues, si han de mostrar bondad y sinceridad con mi señor, díganmelo; y si no, díganmelo también, para que vaya yo a la mano derecha o a la izquierda.”

So now if you will show kindness and be true to my boss, tell me. And if not, tell me so I may know which way to turn.”

50 L abán y Betuel respondieron: “Del Señor ha salido esto. No podemos decir que está mal ni que está bien.

Then Laban and Bethuel answered, “This thing comes from the Lord. We cannot speak for or against it.

51 M ira, Rebeca está delante de ti, tóma la y vete, y que sea ella la mujer del hijo de tu señor, como el Señor ha dicho.”

See, Rebekah is in front of you. Take her and go. Let her be the wife of your boss’s son, as the Lord has spoken.”

52 C uando el siervo de Abraham escuchó sus palabras, se postró en tierra delante del Señor.

When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he put his face to the ground before the Lord.

53 E ntonces el siervo sacó objetos de plata, objetos de oro y vestidos, y se los dio a Rebeca. También dio cosas preciosas a su hermano y a su madre.

He brought out things made of silver and gold, and clothes, and gave them to Rebekah. He gave things of much worth to her brother and mother also.

54 D espués él y los hombres que estaban con él comieron y bebieron y pasaron allí la noche. Cuando se levantaron por la mañana, el siervo dijo: “Envíenme a mi señor.”

Then he and the men with him ate and drank and stayed the night there. When they got up in the morning, he said, “Send me away to my boss.”

55 P ero el hermano y la madre de Rebeca dijeron: “Permite que la joven se quede con nosotros unos días, quizá diez; después se irá.”

But her brother and her mother said, “Let the girl stay with us a few days, at least ten. Then she may go.”

56 “ No me detengan,” les dijo el siervo, “puesto que el Señor ha dado éxito a mi viaje; envíenme para que vaya a mi señor.”

But he said to them, “Do not make me stay any more days, since the Lord has made my way go well. Send me away so I may go to my boss.”

57 “ Llamaremos a la joven,” respondieron ellos, “y le preguntaremos cuáles son sus deseos.”

They said, “We will call the girl and ask her what she wants to do.”

58 E ntonces llamaron a Rebeca y le dijeron: “¿Te irás con este hombre?” “Iré,” dijo ella.

They called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?” And she said, “I will go.”

59 E nviaron, pues, a su hermana Rebeca y a su nodriza con el siervo de Abraham y sus hombres.

So they sent away their sister Rebekah and her nurse. They went with Abraham’s servant and the men who were with him.

60 B endijeron a Rebeca y le dijeron: “Que tú, hermana nuestra, Te conviertas en millares de miríadas, Y posean tus descendientes La puerta de los que los aborrecen.” Isaac y Rebeca Se Encuentran

They prayed that good would come to Rebekah, and said to her, “You are our sister. May you become the mother of millions. May your children and all their children’s children after them take over the cities of those who hate them.”

61 R ebeca se levantó con sus doncellas y, montadas en los camellos, siguieron al hombre. El siervo, pues, tomó a Rebeca y se fue.

Then Rebekah and her servants got up on the camels and followed the man. So the servant of Abraham took Rebekah and left.

62 I saac había venido a Beer Lajai Roi, pues habitaba en la tierra del Neguev (región del sur).

Now Isaac had come from Beerlahairoi, and was living in the Negev.

63 Y por la tarde Isaac salió al campo a meditar. Alzó los ojos y vio que venían unos camellos.

Isaac had gone out to pray in the field in the evening. He looked up and saw that camels were coming.

64 R ebeca alzó los ojos, y cuando vio a Isaac, bajó del camello,

And Rebekah looked up and saw Isaac. She got off the camel

65 y dijo al siervo: “¿Quién es ese hombre que camina por el campo a nuestro encuentro?” “Es mi señor,” le respondió el siervo. Y ella tomó el velo y se cubrió.

and said to Abraham’s servant, “Who is that man walking in the field to meet us?” Abraham’s servant said, “He is my boss.” So she took a cloth and covered her face.

66 E l siervo contó a Isaac todo lo que había hecho.

The servant told Isaac all the things he had done.

67 E ntonces Isaac la trajo a la tienda de su madre Sara, y tomó a Rebeca y ella fue su mujer, y la amó. Así se consoló Isaac después de la muerte de su madre.

Then Isaac brought Rebekah into his mother Sarah’s tent, and she became his wife. And he loved her. So Isaac found comfort after his mother’s death.
